VOLUNTEER & STATION NEWS Calling volunteers and staff at RMPBS (Denver) and KUVO: Submit your nomination for the annual “From the Heart” awards! Calling on volunteers and staff at the RMPBS (Denver) station and KUVO to nominate a very special volunteer and/or a special Denver staff member—those folks whom you have observed giving exceptional and cheerful service to the Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO community. They exceed expectations and often work quietly out of the limelight. You may see these people, perhaps on a daily basis or maybe during a special event or project working quietly and efficiently with no thought of reward or accolade. The nomination deadline is Monday, January 18, 2018. The nominations need not be elegantly written, just heartfelt. You will be reminded again in early January of the deadline. However, we’d appreciate your submitting nominations early while the idea is in your mind. The brief and simple nomination form is available online at www.rmpbs.org/heart or contact Susan Barber at [email protected]. Past recipients are listed below. While these individuals are no longer eligible for consideration, please use them as an example of what behavior exemplifies “From the Heart”. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 14, 2018 and join in celebrating the 22nd consecutive year of honoring volunteers and staff members who have given unselfishly of time and energy to support Rocky Mountain PBS (Denver) or KUVO. The awards are scheduled to be presented in the Teleconference room at the Denver RMPBS station, 1089 Bannock Street on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 from 3–4pm. Volunteers and staff are invited to attend. We will be serving cake, punch and seasonal goodies. Please RSVP to Susan Barber [email protected]. A volunteer corps of 60 worked during December organizing and reading the 560 submissions from 6th, 7th and 8th grade students throughout Colorado. The young authors came from charter schools, public schools, private schools, parochial schools, online schools and homeschools. RMPBS thanks all these young writers, their teachers and their parents. Thanks also go to Douglas County Libraries for their generous support of the program. This year, StoryMakers had a different twist. We asked all 6th, 7th and 8th grade authors in Colorado to submit a short, fictional story that captured a Colorado “sense of place.” Volunteer judges were treated to stories that reflected the dynamics and beauty unique to Colorado. Volunteer judges worked in Denver, Grand Junction and Colorado Springs. On December 18th, the judging process was completed and 23 finalists were chosen. They will be attending a workshop on January 20, 2018 at the Denver station. Dr. Andrea Bobotis (from the Lighthouse Writers Workshop) will work with the young authors on writing techniques and styles and Lori Jane Gliha (investigative journalist from RMPBS Insight) will approach story-writing from the journalist’s perspective. Laura Sampson Patricia Laverty Unique to the entire PBS system, the SAM volunteers believe strongly in the importance of saving the history of Rocky Mountain Public Media to allow the contents of the archives to be recognized, enjoyed and shared by the staff, the volunteers, public media researchers and the community at large. “What are these volunteers doing?” you might ask. Every day of the week, the SAM volunteers are digitizing photographs, inventorying local productions, digitizing station-related documents, conducting oral history interviews and gathering unique memorabilia items. The number of items preserved by each committee is so impressive that they must be duly noted and applauded:

Document Preservation: Lead by co-chairs Patricia Laverty and Sue Inglis, 17,025 documents have been scanned, digitized and entered into a Document Preservation database. Documents include newspaper articles, PROMO magazines, minutes, local production notes, annual reports, newsletters, and much much more. Memorabilia: 3,834 individual items have been photographed or scanned, digitized, and entered into a Memorabilia database. Memorabilia includes a wide variety of items ranging from original program scripts written in the 1950s to KUVO coffee mugs. Oral History: Lead by co-chairs, Buzz and Laura Sampson, 207 hour-long interviews have been videotaped, transcribed and entered into the Oral History database. Interviews include current/former staff, current/former volunteers and members of the Governing Board.

Photographs: Lead by chairperson, Pat Hoeft, 60,665 photographs have been scanned, digitized, identified as fully as possible and entered into the Photo database. This collection ranges from a photo taken on the first day of KRMA broadcast in 1956 to the recent premieres of our local production, Colorado Experience. Production Preservation: Lead by co-chairs Thomas Muja and Lloyd Anderson, 15,031 local productions have been inventoried and hundreds of them have been transferred to DVD with details entered into the Production Preservation database. Inventoried productions range from 35mm film to Betacam digital.

If you’d like to join the efforts to preserve the history of Rocky Mountain Public Media, please contact Susan Barber in the RMPM Volunteer Office, 303-620-5715 or [email protected]. Susan can tell you lots more about SAM. Station’s Archived Memories welcomes new volunteers throughout the year. History is being made every day, so don’t wait to call or email. Training is provided, so please call now to volunteer on the remarkable volunteer-driven SAM project.

In Memory of Lydia Winkler 1934-2017 By Pat Hoeft, Chair, Station’s Archived Memories

Many long-time volunteers and some staff members will remember Lydia Winkler who passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on the day after Thanksgiving, 2017. (Lydia and husband Carl) Lydia began volunteering in 1967 as an Auction Go-Getter in Golden (these were women who went door to door in their local shopping areas to ask for donations of merchandise or

certificates). She did other Auction jobs and chaired various Auction volunteer committees over the course of many years, most of them while raising three children. During those years Lydia also volunteered for Membership Festivals, the Art Auction (a separate event not broadcast on our air). In both 1980 and 1981 she and her new husband Carl wrote and published the notes for KRMA’s first two Wine Tastings, a new event for the Denver area. These elaborate brochures included the labels and descriptions of each wine offered for tasting.

In 1982 Lydia applied for and accepted the newly-created staff position of Auction Volunteer Coordinator which, in those days, involved more than a thousand volunteers. In time she was promoted to Auction Manager as well as Volunteer Coordinator for all station activities that used volunteer support. Eventually the workload was heavy enough to hire a separate Volunteer Coordinator, trained by Lydia. She retired in 1999 but when her successor resigned suddenly in early 2001 she returned on a contract basis to spearhead that year’s Auction with great success. During her tenure as a staff member Lydia was active in the community as a board member for Foothills Art Center and in PBS Development on a national level. She served, too, as a member of Directors of Volunteers in Agencies, Colorado Chapter.

Staff picture 1982

In 2003 Lydia came back to Auction as a volunteer, always working in the background. She served at the inception of the Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) committee which benefited greatly from her long-term memory of KRMA/RMPBS staff, volunteers, events, initiatives and even growing pains. She was a member-at-large of the Volunteer Board, always ready to give sage advice, given her long experience with staff, volunteers, donors and members. All of which is why Lydia was honored in 2010 with RMPBS’s Diane Papedo Distinguished Achievement Award. Lydia was a born leader whose tools were kindness, patience and a keen perception of character. She was always able to offer a suggestion that helped find a solution and was ready to offer practical comment based on her many active years as a guide to all things volunteer. She was both a friend and a mentor to many and she especially enjoyed the relationships she developed by working closely with committee chairs. Both volunteers and staff will miss her quick mind and delightful sense of humor.
