ducational television has evolved dramatically since our firstdays as a local broadcaster. Channel 10 began broadcasting inMarch 1968, offering only three hours a day of evening pro-gramming. In September that year, Channel 10 added six

hours a day of weekday educational classes and four hours of high schoolcompletion courses for adults on the weekends. Since our inception, partof our mission has been to use technology to deliver education.

Forty-six years ago, the Vegas PBS educational recipe used only blackand white television, a classroom teacher, and printed worksheets toeducate children and adults. Today we use television, cable, DVDs,Internet games and even mobile phones in our unique role as a publicservice broadcaster chartered to use technology to deliver education. Westill transmit video-based instruction and we still target students need-ing special help, but our “ingredients” have changed and our partnershave expanded.

For example, this month Vegas PBS and the Las Vegas – Clark CountyLibrary District will launch a grant-funded effort to assist adults in ourcommunity who do not have a high school diploma. The programemploys direct instruction and tutoring by library staff, extended accessto library computers, and Vegas PBS online courses. Graduates will com-plete the program with a high school diploma and workforce certificatesqualifying them for careers in child care, transportation, building securi-ty, food service or office management.

Additionally, Vegas PBS was involved in a program to provide vocation-al training to juvenile prisoners in North Las Vegas to reduce recidivism.Using funds from employment training programs, Vegas PBS staff workedwith the Hospitality International Training (HIT) Line Cook program andprison professionals to design a procedure for online certification exams– a first for Nevada’s prisons. Vegas PBS was able to use technology todeliver education in order to achieve life-changing basic and workforceeducation for these children.

Also this month, we will air seven hours of high school dropout pre-vention information programming as part of American Graduate Day.During this national event, we will be one of four stations selected topresent a live studio remote. Our seven-minute segment will focus onsuccessful collaboration between the Clark County School District,Communities In Schools, and other non-profit organizations to combatthe dropout crisis in Southern Nevada.

FDR returns topolitics in 1928 and, as governor of NewYork, acts with such vigor and imaginationduring the first years of the GreatDepression that the Democrats turn tohim as their presidential nominee in 1932.At his inauguration, he tells his frightenedcountrymen the only thing they have tofear is “fear itself.”

The Rising Road (1933-1939)

FDR brings the same optimism and ener-gy to the White House that his cousinTheodore displayed. Aimed at ending theDepression, his sweeping New Dealrestores the people’s self-confidence andtransforms the relationship between themand their government. Eleanor rejects the

traditional role of first lady and becomesher husband’s liberal conscience. As thedecade ends, FDR faces two questions:whether to run for an unprecedented thirdterm and how to deal with the rise of Hitler.

The Common Cause (1939-1944)

FDR shatters the third-term tradition,struggles to prepare a reluctant country toenter World War II and, after the Japaneseattack on Pearl Harbor, helps set thecourse toward Allied victory. Meanwhile,Eleanor struggles to keep New Dealreforms alive in wartime and travels thePacific to comfort wounded servicemen.Diagnosed with congestive heart failure in1943 and with the war still raging, FDRresolves to conceal his condition and runfor a fourth term.

SATURDAY

A Strong and Active Faith(1944-1962)

Frail and failing, but determined to seethe war through to victory, FDR wins re-election and begins planning for a peace-ful postwar world, but a cerebral hemor-rhage kills him at 63. After her husband’sdeath, Eleanor Roosevelt proves herself ashrewd politician and a skilled negotiatorin her own right, as well as a champion ofcivil rights, civil liberties and the UnitedNations. When she dies in 1962, she ismourned everywhere as the First Lady ofthe World.

Boulware has been selected as a first place

national winner in the annual PBS KIDS

Writers Contest!

Oniana is the first student from Southern

Nevada to place first in the national contest through Vegas PBS’ 14-year participation in

the competition from thousands of entries. As a local Vegas PBS first place winner in the

second grade category, Oniana’s story was forwarded to the national competition. Her story

was chosen as a winner from tens of thousands of submissions representing PBS stations

nationwide. A panel of America’s leading children’s writers and producers served as hon-

orary judges for the PBS KIDS Writers Contest, including author Jeff Kinney and brothers

Martin and Chris Kratt, creators and co-executive producers of Wild Kratts.

Oniana’s story, titled “Eric’s Job,” tells the story of a young boy named Eric who has aspi-

rations of becoming a hair stylist. Eric meets some challenges and provides the reader

with both adventures and some important thoughts about following your dreams and work-

ing with others. This highly creative story, which we will not give away here, continues on

with plot twists and a surprise ending. Oniana’s mixed-media illustrations were highly

imaginative and were also an important component to telling her story. “Eric’s Job” cele-

brates diversity and overcoming challenges and will touch the hearts of all who read it. It

As you can see, planning one’s estategoes beyond filling out forms. Shortly thereafter, Charliepassed. Unbeknownst to everyone, hisfriend Jack had a judgment lien againsthim. After many twists and turns, Ricky’sinheritance was seized by Jack’s creditor.

he PBS Arts Fall Festival kicks off this month with the New York

Philharmonic’s critically acclaimed staged production of Stephen Sondheim and

Hugh Wheeler’s musical thriller. These sold-out engagements, staged in March

2014 at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, tell the story of the eponymous barber who seeks

vengeance on what he sees as a merciless world, along with his romantically inclined

landlady. The remarkable cast features bass-baritone Bryn Terfel in the title role, with

Academy Award-winning actress Emma Thompson as Mrs. Lovett and Jeff Blumenkrantz

portraying The Beadle. New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert conducts the

Philharmonic. This celebrated musical theater work’s original production received eight Tony

Awards in 1979 — including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score.

Why did the Incas build it onsuch an inaccessible site, clinging to thesteep face of a mountain? Who livedamong its stone buildings, farmed itsemerald green terraces and drank from itssophisticated aqueduct system? NOVAjoins a new generation of archeologists asthey probe areas of Machu Picchu thathaven't been touched since the time of theIncas and unearth burials of the peoplewho built the sacred site. Veterinarian Mark Evans travels to theshores of Canada's Hudson Bay. Every yearbears congregate along this coast as theywait for the sea ice to harden so they canhead north and feast on seals. But boldbears are venturing into the towns ofChurchill and Arviat and are terrorizinglocal residents. Three people have beenviciously attacked in recent months andbears are regularly shot dead in self-defense. Evans arrives in the town ofChurchill just hours after an attack in thecenter of town has left two people withserious injuries and two bears dead. Heaccompanies the town’s polar bear alertteam as they transport a captured bear byhelicopter to a release site outside town.And in the Inuit town of Arviat, Markworks with local wildlife officers to testhigh-tech solutions to the problem.

In this week's episode, take a thrillingride over Western Europe with cranes andgeese, and see where birds gather by themillions to breed. Cranes and geese riseover Venice, Dover, Edinburgh and themonkey-guarded Rock of Gibraltar. n January 3, 1959, a column

of victorious young rebels

advanced along Cuba’s main

highway towards Havana., led

by the fiery revolutionary, Fidel Castro. Over

the next few decades, by the force of his per-

sonality and the might of his Soviet benefac-

tor, Castro turned himself and Cuba into sig-

nificant players on the world stage. This

unique film details the life and times of one

of the most controversial political figures of

the 20th Century and takes you on a fasci-

nating journey by using only news and docu-

mentary footage — past and present. There is

no narration in this film and no interviews.

Instead, the documentary relies solely on the

words of journalists who covered the major

events in Castro’s life to tell the story. It is

a insightful approach, one that gives the

viewer a chance to experience the life and

times of Cuba’s leader as if they were actu-

ally living through them.

Mount Rushmore: American ExperienceThursday, September 11 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS RewindHigh on a granite cliff in South Dakota’s Black Hills tower the huge carved facesof four American presidents. Who possessed the audacity to create such a gar-gantuan work? The story of Mount Rushmore’s creation is as bizarre and wonder-ful as the monument itself. It is the tale of a hyperactive, temperamental artistwhose talent and determination propelled the project, even as his ego and obses-sion threatened to tear it apart. It is the story of hucksterism and hyperbole, ofa massive public works project in the midst of an economic depression. And it isthe story of dozens of ordinary Americans who suddenly found themselves sus-pended high on a cliff face with drills and hammers as a sculptor they consid-ered insane, Gutzon Borglum, directed them in the creation of what some wouldcall a monstrosity and others a masterpiece. Originally broadcast on Tuesday,September 9 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10.

n the summer of 1910, hundreds of wildfires raged across the Northern Rockies. By the time

it was all over, more than three million acres had burned and at least 78 firefighters were

dead. It was the largest fire in American history, and it assured the future of the still-new

United States Forest Service. The fire reinforced the value of land protected for the common

good, but it also had profoundly tragic ramifications. It ended the tussle between those who

thought every fire should be fought promptly and aggressively and those who believed that fire

suppression was not always the best way to protect the wilderness. It set the Forest Service and

conservationists on a century-long journey away from controlled burning that would, in the end,

harm the ecology of the wilderness it was intended to protect.

From the outside, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben are the classic London emblems of his-

toric British democracy. Today, this building stands as a monument to a fair and open political

system, but was this always the case? Go inside its gothic walls and discover the hidden worlds

of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, where back-stabbing, intrigue and traditions

are the order of the day. Around the corner is one of the world’s most famous churches,

Westminster Abbey, steeped in Anglo-Saxon myth and legend, royal extortion and…dead people.

More than 3,000 great men and women have been buried or memorialized here throughout the

ages. It has hosted the coronation of every king and queen of England since 1066, as well as 16

royal weddings. This program is originally broadcast on Sunday, September 7 at 8 p.m.

woman behind the fame and those inspired by her extraordinary legacy. Suchet explores the close

links between Christie’s extraordinary life and her work and discovers what it was about the
