Welcometothefirstnewsletterof2015,writtenandeditedinthefrigidtemperaturescurrentlybeing“enjoyed”hereintheOttawavalley–fortunatelywehaveavoidedthe“Snowmaggeddon2015”thathashitourfriendsontheEasternseaboardoftheUS.

AnotherrelativelyquietmonthintheRoverRoom,butIhavebeenabletomaintainsteadyprogresson31HF77.Iwantedtogettogripswiththefuelsystems–especiallytodeterminetheconditionofthetwinfueltanks.Theoneunderthepassengerseathasnotleakedsofarbutdiddropsomefuelontheflooroninitialfilling–whichsuggeststhatit’snon-toohealthyandwillneedtoberepaired/replacedbeforetoolong.Iremovedthetankunderthedriver’sseatandfoundittohavealargesplit/rustholeinthebase,soitisdefinitelynotgoingbackontothevehicle.SoIhaveputsomefeelersouttolookforreplacements.

Itooktheopportunitytofireitupandhaditrunningforagood25minutesjusttocirculatetheoilandgeteverythingwarm.Amreallylookingforwardtodrivingitforreal….

InadditionIrepackedtherearwheelbearingsandreplacedtheoilseals,scrapedandthenpaintedthefrontandrearaxles,beforeturningmyattentiontothebulkhead.Thisisingoodcondition,onlyneedingsomesurfacerustremovingaroundthefoot-wells,vents,andtopofthedash,beforebeingpaintedwithPOR15.

Ihaveupdatedmyneeds/wantslistwith3Brothersandexpecttoreceiveamixedpackageofbitsandpieceswithinthenextcoupleofweeks.

Latestjobscompletedattheweekendinclude,stripping/cleaningandreassemblingthebrakepressuresplittervalve,andfreeingoff,andadjustingtheparkingbrake:Whichcompletestheworkonthebrakes–otherthanfillingthesystemwithDOT5fluidandbleedingitandtheclutchhydraulics.IhavestartedtotransferthepioneertoolmountsfromaveryusedlookingtailgatetoamuchbetterconditionitemthatBruceprovidedwiththevehicle.BruceandIalsomadethepilgrimagetothelocalServiceOntario“shop”anddidasuccessfultransferofownership–nicetogetthepaperworkinorder.

Mynexttask–andthankstoAndrewFforprovidingaleadtofollow–istogetsomepaint–NATOGreenandDesertSand:Plustherightshadeofolivedrabforthe101.PaintingthetrucksisthepartI’mreallylookingforwardto,asIwanttoreturnboththeSeries3and101totheirin-servicecolourschemes.

Original maker was Steyr of Austria and the model is the Percheron. This one is a licence build pre production prototype made by the then UTDC in Kingston (now Bombardier).

In Canadian Military service it is called the HLVW. Or heavy logistical vehicle wheeled, 10 tonne truck.

Recentlythiswidetrack3/4tontrailermadebySankeycameupforsalelocally.Theyareunusualinthiskindofcondition.

ThesetrailershavebeencomingoutoftheBritishArmyTrainingUnitSuffieldotherwiseknownasBATUS.

MostofeverythingthatcomesoutofSuffieldiswellusedandhascharacteronlyofaclassthatarealestateagentwouldappreciate.

Usuallytheyhavebeenpushedandpulledandoverloadedandrolledanddrivenintoandflogged.

OfallthemilitarytrailersaroundonthemarketinthesizerangeforaLandRoverthesearefarandawaythebestformanyreasons.

Firstofalltheyhaveatailgate.Theearlyversionsdidnot.

Theyhaveanadjustablehardnonpneumaticjockeywheelthatisveryrobust.Noothertrailercanbemovedaroundwithsucheaseastheseare.Asmallamountoftongueweightandtheyglide.

Whenyouwanttoparkthemtheyhavedroplegsattherearthatturnthewholetrailerintoastableplatform.Manypeopleusethemtocookonthebedoncethetailgateisdown.

Sankey Trailers

TheonemistakepeoplemakeaboutthewiringandelectricsforthetraileristhatNATOdoesnotmeanitconnectsandworksproperlywitheveryotherNATOplug.

ThesubtledifferenceisthattheNorthAmericanmilitaryvehiclesusethesamebulbfortheturnandstoplights.TheLandRovershaveaseparatebulbforeachfunction.

Itwasarough,tough,no-frills,four-wheel-drivebruiser,conceivedasafarmvehiclebyaBritishcarcompanyemergingbatteredandbruisedfromtheSecondWorldWar.

Nobody,leastofallRover,knowninthe1930sforitsupmarketsalooncars,expectedthecheap-and-cheerfulLandRovertolast.

Butlastithas.WhenIndianownerTataMotorsfinallykillsofftheLandRoverDefenderlaterthisyearitwillmeantheendoftheroadforaniconicvehiclewhoselineagecanbetracedbackto1948.

“Britainwasinaterriblerecessionandthecompanyneededtoearnexportdollars,”saysMikeGould,formerLandRoverbrandmanager.

“ThecompanyturnedtotheLandRoverassomethingtheycouldsellasautilityvehicle,tothefarmingmarketandoverseas,andearnAmericandollarsthroughaidprogrammes.”

Fromtheoutset,theLandRoverwasanendearinglyback-of-the-envelopekindofvehicle.Rushedintoproductionoverthewinterof1947-48,thefirstsketchwasdrawnwithastickinthesandneartheWelshholidayhomeofRover’sengineeringdirector,MauriceWilks.

Butconceivedasastopgaptokick-startcarproductioninatimeofausterity,theLandRoverquicklybecameanindustryphenomenon.

In1948Roversoldjust1,758.Thefollowingyear,thanksinparttoitsadoptionbytheBritisharmedforces,morethan12,000LandRoversleftSolihull.BylastyearthecompanyhadsoldmorethantwomillionSeriesI,IIandIIIandDefenders.

Thesecret,MrGouldbelieves,layintheappealoftheLandRover’suncompromisingdevotiontofunctionoverform.

“WhenIwasbrandmanager(inthe1990s)wehadaconcepttoreplaceitwithavehiclebasedontheDiscoveryplatform,whichwouldhavehadmorecabinspaceandbeenagood-lookingvehicle,”herecalls.

Buttheplanwasscrapped,partlyasaresultofcustomerfeedback.

“OneofthemosttellingcommentswasmadeinFrance,”recallsMrGould.“TheloosetranslationwasthattheLandRover‘speaksitsvocation’—inotherwords,itdoeswhatitsaysinthetin.”

TheLandRoverhasstubbornlydeclinedtomovewiththetimes.In2012,whentheDefenderunderwentitsfinalupgrade,Autocarmagazinelovinglycelebrateditsshortcomings.

Thedrivingpositionremained“cramped”,its“tiny,flimsy”windscreenwiperswere“awfulbymodernstandards”,theinteriortrimwas“dreadful”andtheincongruouschromerunningboardswere“oneofthefewremotelystyleconsciouselements”.

ButAutocarconcludedtherewasnopointincomparingtheDefendertoanyothercar.Thiswasavehicle“forfarms,outbacks,junglesanddeserts”,capableoftacklinga45-degreeslope—forwardsorbackwards—andwadingthroughwaterhalfametredeep.

Inthe66yearssinceitfirstrolledofftheproductionlineintheBritishMidlands,theLandRoverhaswontheheartsofeveryonefromfarmerstoroyalty.

“Ithasbeenaloveaffair,”admitsMattPrior,road-testeditorforAutocar.

Atwork,Priorhasdriventheworld’sfastestandmostluxuriouscars.Butathome,thefamilycarisaLandRoverDefender—andit’snotimmediatelyclearwhy.

DiehardenthusiastssuchasPriorareattractedtowhathecallsthe“purity”ofavehicledesignedtobehosedout,ratherthan“Itwasbornoutofaverystraightforwardprincipleandhasnevercarriedmoremassandfripperiesthanithasneededtodothejob,andthatappealsalot,especiallyascarsgetmorecomplicated,”hesays.

Thecramped,cold,noisy,boxyworkhorsestruckachordrightfromtheoff,andinalltherightplaces.

WhenthenewlycrownedQueenElizabethIIembarkedonherfirsttouroftheCommonwealthin1953,aLandRoverSeriesIwentwithher.Today,HerMajestystilldrivesaDefenderoverthechallengingterrainofherBalmoralestateinScotland.

LikemanycountriesaroundtheworldwithanhistoricrelationshiptotheUK,theUAEhasasoftspotfortheLandRover,whichcanclaimtohaveplayedasignificantsupportingroleinthefoundationofthenation.

QuicklyadoptedbytheBritisharmyforuseininhospitableclimatesandlandscapesaroundtheworld,LandRoverfirstcametothefutureUAEin1951asthevehicleofchoicefortheTrucialOmanLevies,theSharjah-basedforcesetupbytheBritishtoprotectthebordersoftheemirates.

Intheroad-freedaysoftheembryonicUAE,thevehiclequicklybecamethetransportofchoiceforeveryonefromfishermentoroyalty.

IntheyearsbeforethefoundationoftheUAE,SheikhZayedreliedonaLandRoverforhisregularexcursionstofar-flungdesertcommunities—apartnershipcommemoratedbytheLandRoverthathasprideofplaceinthecourtyardoftheAlAinPalaceMuseum,hometoZayeduntilhebecameRulerofAbuDhabiin1966.

TheLandRoverwasalsothenaturalvehicleforoilcompanieswhenexplorationandproductiontookoff.Ferryingoilmenandtheirgeartoandfroacrossthedesert,itplayedakeypartinhelpingAbuDhabitotapintothevastwealththatlaybeneathitssands,andwhichwouldtransformthecountrybeyondrecognition.

OnemysteryishowthearchaicLandRover,withasmanyfailingsascharms,hasmanagedtosurvivealltheseyearsasthecompanypassedthroughseveralowners,includingBritishLeyland,BritishAerospace,BMWand,asJaguarLandRoversince2008,TataMotors.

Afterall,whenitcomestosuchconceptsasprecisionengineering,“theDefenderdefiesdescription,really,”saysGould.“Ifyoulookatthewayit’sbuilt,thedashandtherearbodyareputontothechassisandthenalltheotherbitsandpiecesfillinthegaps,basically.”

Suchhaphazardprecision,unsurprisingly,irkedBMW,buttheLandRoversomehowmanagedtooutwititsnewowner’sattemptstoimposeGermanicefficiency.

“BMWtriedtobringintheirownmethodofqualitycontrol,whichplaysalotonfitandfinishofpanels,andtheDefendersimplycouldn’tgetanywherenearit,”recallsGould.“Sointheendithaditsownqualitystandards.”

Overtheyears,thefamilyhasgrown,eachnewmodelsproutingrefinementsthathavetakenitprogressivelyfurtherfromitsroots—theRangeRover,firstintroducedin1970,followedbytheDiscovery(1989)andtheFreelander(1997).

TheoriginalLandRoverwasrelaunchedandrenamedtheDefenderin1990,butitisinthislineofthefamily,saysGould,throughwhich“acompletelineofmitochondrialDNAruns”.

Thelastreallybigchangewasin1983,when—tothehorrorofpurists—theLandRoveracquiredcoil-springsuspension,“butalthoughthevehiclehaschangedenginesafewtimestheheritageiscompleteallthewaybackto1948.”

A“replacement”maybeinthewings—thecompanyhasreleasedimagesofsomethingitcallsaLandRoverDefender100Sport—butit’smorecloselyrelatedtoaTransformertoythantheoriginal.

“It’sabitlikethelatestMiniorVolkswagenBeetle,orFiat500,”sniffsAutocar’sPrior.“It’sthatsortofcaricature,whichisfine.Butitisn’taLandRover.”

FewdoubttherealLandRovercouldbounce,grindandclimbitswayfarintothefuture—thankstorustproofaluminiumpanelsandagalvanisedchassis,

modelsbuiltinthe‘50sarestillontheroad,andthereissurelyarealisticprospectofsomeLandRover,somewhere,inabout2050eventuallybecomingthefirstcartobeindailyservicefor100years.

Intheend,though,economicrealityhasbroughttheLandRovertotheendoftheroad.Withnoroomevenforairbags,modernsafetyandenvironmentalregulationshaveprovedtobeahilltoosteep.

Heavyrelianceonhand-buildinghasalsopriceditoutofamarketnowdominatedbymodern,Japaneserivals,completewithcreaturecomforts.

Nothing,perhaps,bettercapturestheincongruityoftheDefender’sdefiantexistenceinthemodernworldthantheimagescurrentlypromotingthemodernLandRoverrangeonthecompany’sownwebsite.
