2014istheyearofthehorse–apparentlyanauspiciousyearthatwillmovequickly,andgreatachievementscan/willbemade.IhopethatthisappliestoOVLR,andweseeahigherlevelofparticipationbythemembership,intheorganization,coordinationandattendanceofeventsthisyear,thanwehaveseenoverthelast3or4.

TheLandRoverDefenderisoneofthosevehiclesthatwealwayshearaboutbutneverseeatdealersstateside–atleastnotsincethe‘90s.Unfortunately,thattrendpromisestocontinuewithtwonewspecialeditions:theDefenderSilverPackandBlackPack.BothwillbeshownattheGenevamotorshow.
TheBlackPackfeaturesaSantoriniblackfinishontheroof,grille,grillesurround,headlightsurroundsandwheelarches.TheDefenderscriptonthehoodisalsoinblack.Tintedglasshidestheinterior,whichsportsablackheadlinertocompletethelook.Twowheelpackagesareoffered.
TheSilverPackputsbrightIndussilvertotheitemsthatareblackontheBlackPack.TheSilverPackgetsdual-finishalloywheels,withwhitetail-andindicatorlights.

UnderstandingwhatyourLandRovercandowhiledrivingoffroadandwhatitcannotdoisthekeytosafeandfunoffroaddriving.TobetterunderstandthecapabilitiesofyourLandRoverthisarticlewillhelpyouappreciatewhatyourunmodifiedLandRoveriscapableofdoing.Wewillalsodiscusswhatwemeanwhenwespeakaboutcertaintermsandwordsrelatedtooffroaddriving.
FirstoffyouneedtoappreciatewhatyourRovercando.Itisanamazingpieceoftechnology,especiallythenewmodels.NewLandRoversarechock-o-blockfulloftechnologicalenablerswhichallowanuntraineddrivertoachieveincrediblefeatswhiledrivingoffroad.Someprinciplesdonotchangethough.NomatterwhattechnologyyourLandRoverpossesses,betheyTractionControl,HillDecentControl(HDC),AntiLockBrakingSystem(ABS),DynamicStabilityControl(DSC)ortheawesomeTerrainResponseSystemyoustillneedtoknowcertainthingsaboutyourLandRovertoenjoyitsafelyandwithoutdamagingit.
Somesafetytipstostartyouoff.
1. Doubleup:Especiallywhenyouarefirststartingoutandlearningtodriveoffroaddon’tgoalone,bringafriend.TakingasecondLandRoveroffroadwithyouhelpsyourconfidenceandismoreenjoyableforeveryone.OnceyougetsomeexperienceandunderstandthefundamentalsofyourLandRoverandyourabilitiesyoucanbegintoheadoutalone.
2. WalkIt:Inthecaseofdeepmud,waterholes,rocksandhillyterraingetoutandwalkthegroundbeforedrivingit.Pokethebottomofwaterholesandmudholeswithasticktomakesureitisn’ttoodeepforyourvehicleandtoseewhatisonthebottom.Lookforyourbestapproachangle(figure1)thedepartureangle(figure2),themaximumgradient(figure4)andtraverseangles(figure5)aswellasthemaximumfordingdepth(figure6)andobstacleclearanceheight(figure7)toseehowtodrivetheterraintogetthrough.
3. LockIt:Ifyouhaveafour-wheel,twowheeldrivefeature,lockitfourwheeldrivebeforeenteringthemud,climbingthehillsorgoingthroughthewater.Ifyouwaituntilyouneedto,itwillbetoo
Off Road Driving for Beginnerslate.Moretiresturningwithpowerthroughterrainwillimproveyourchancesofmakingitthroughandwillalsoreducetirespin.
4. Lowit:Learnwhentouselowrange,atfirstputitinlowrangeeverytimeyougetonatrailtolearnhowbesttouseit.Lowsecondgearisthetypicalstartingpointtolearnfrom.
5. Slowit:Whenapproachingastretchofmuddyroad,rockyterrainorwater,maintainaslowbutsteadyspeed,neverspeedthroughmud.B.LuddyNucklesoffersthisadvicetodrivers:“Driveasslowaspossible,driveasfastasneeded.”Thismightbethebestadviceyouwillevergetforoffroaddriving.
6. Controlit-Keepthewheelsstraightasyouenterthemuckandforaslongasyourmomentumcontinues.Rackingthewheelbackandforthcanbeusefulwhenyoustarttobogdown.Thishelpsthetreadontheedgeofyourtiresgrabtheterrain.Aslongasyouaremovingforwardatasteadyspeed,turningthewheelswillonlyslowmomentumandincreaseyouroddsofgettingstuck.Learnhowtousethistechniquebeforeyougoalone.Tokeepthetiresonthegroundbeawareofyourmaximumrampangles(Figure3).
6. Avoidit:It’sbettertoblazeyourownpathinadeepmudsituation,asrutscausedbyotherdriverscanreducesteeringabilityandcanbenexttoimpossibletopulloutof.Theyalsotendtoholdthesoftest,wettestportionofmudandreducetheamountofclearancebetweenthegroundandbottomofthevehicle,increasingthelikelihoodofgettingseriouslystuck.Thisiswhereknowingyourrampangleabilitiescanhelp.
7. Airitdown:Ifnecessaryinmudandalmostalwayswhendrivingonsand,reducetheamountofairpressureintirestoallowmoretreadtomakecontactwithdrivingsurface.B.LuddyNucklesoffersthisadvice,“ifyoumustairdownnevergolowerthan15to20pounds”.Thiswillallowyoutodrivehomeortoagaragetoairupwithoutdamagingyourtires.

Whenheadingupahillitcanbeveryscarylookingatonlyskyortreetopsandnotseeingwhereyouareheading.KnowyourmaximumgradientangleandthatyourLandRoverisverycapableisreassuring.Todriveupsteepslopesyouneedtobeawareofyourdrivingcockpitsurroundings.Sitbackinyourseatmakesureyourseatbeltissecureandsteerwhereyouneedtogo.Youshouldbeinlowrangeforhillclimbs,giveitsteadybutfirmthrottle.Thisiswhereyouneedtorelyonyourvehicletotally.Knowwhereyourwheelsarepointed;lookatyoursteeringwheeltobesureorpokeyourheadoutyourwindowandhavelook.Listentoyourenginerevsandthelistenforpotentialforwheelspin.Don’tslowonceyouhavestarted,remembermomentum.ThemaximumgradientyourLandRoveriscapableofascendingistrulyamazing.

Learningthelingo:UnderstandingtheApproachangle(figure1)ofyourLandRoverisveryimportantasyouapproachanobstacle.Thismaybeahole,arock,afallenlogorwater.Onceyoudecidetodriveitknowthatyoumayhityourbumperorthefrontofyourvehicle.Trytoapproachonewheelatatimenotdirectlystraightonwithbothfronttireshittingtheobstacle.

Agreenlane(figure9)isdescribedasanimprovedorgradeddirtroad.Byanydescriptionitisclearlyaroadandiswelldefined.ItispassablebyallLandRovervehicles.Thesetrailswillbedrivableintwowheeldrive,highrangeatmediumtohigherspeeds.However,cautionisrequiredandlowerspeedsmaybenecessaryforLandRoverswithobstacleclearance.Smallrocks(lessthan5”)maybeembeddedintheroadsurface.Thesetrailsgenerallyhaveroomforpassingonmostoftheroad.Somesteepgradesarepossiblebutgenerallytheyareevenandnottoohilly.Fourwheeldriveisrequiredifagreenlaneiswetoricy.
