CHILDREN’S MESSAGE .................................. ................................Rev. Sarah TevisTownes

*** CALL TO WORSHIP

One: The new year has begun, and the light is getting stronger. Many: We live in the echo of stables and the incarnation, holding onto our faith, as memories of Christmas fade. One: We still seek new life shaped by Jesus Christ and this community. We still seek renewal and rebirth. Many: So let us gather in what we know as another day in the eternity of love. One: And let us celebrate who we are and who we are yet to be.

Adapted from the writings of Roddy Hamilton, http://newkilpatrickblog.typepad.com/nk-blogging/mucky-paws/ Used by permission. ***MORNING PRAYER

One: Please pray with me...

Many: Creator God, during this time of worship, you invite us into

conversion and reflection. In our ministry here, our caring for

others is a great joy, but also a grave responsibility. In prayer, and

in our time with one another, may we come to a richer

understanding of what it means to be a part of your world. Amen.

ANTHEM ............................................. “Hear My Prayer” .................................... Chancel Choir

-by Moses Hogan

4

In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name.

Our father, who is in heaven,

Sanctified be your name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

May your kingdom come,

May your will be done,

just as it is in heaven,

so also upon the earth.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

As we forgive our debtors.

Our bread, which is from the earth,

give us day by day.

And forgive us our sins,

just as we should forgive our debtors.

And do not lead us into temptation,

But deliver us from the evil one.

And do not bring us to trial,

But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power

and the glory forever. Amen

New King James Version

Matthew 6:9-13

“’Our Father' in Aramaic :

A New Discovery” by

Richard Antonisz

Galilean Aramaic Translation

Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be,

Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven:

The hallowing of your name echo through the universe!

O Birther! Father-Mother of the Cosmos, Focus your light within us—make it useful:

The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the world!

Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!

Your commonwealth of peace and freedom

sustain our hope and come on earth.

Create your reign of unity now— Your one desire then acts with ours, as in

all light, so in all forms.

With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another,

forgive us.

Grant what we need each day in bread and insight.

Loose the cords of mistakes binding us, as we release the strands we

hold of others’ guilt.

In times of temptation and testing,

strengthen us. From trials too great to endure, spare us.

From the grip of all that is evil, free us.

Do not let surface things delude us, But free us from what holds us back.

From you is born all ruling will, The power and the life to do, The song that beautifies all, From age to age it renews.

For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen.

Truly—power to these statements—may they be the ground from which all my

actions grow: Amen.

Prayers of the Cosmos by Neil Douglas-Klotz An

Aramaic translation.

Today’s Schedule of Events:

Next Week’s Scripture:

Next week’s text comes from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, Chapter 2,

verses 12-16. We will examine the role of the Holy Spirit in prayer, wisdom, and

daily life and pay particular attention to the insights of Christian mystics like

Meister Eckhart, Marguerite Porette, and others.

This is not a text that will insist that you forget all you know; however, it may invite you to

expand what “knowledge” means. I look forward to continuing our “going deeper” series with

you!

Naloxone Training Contact: Becky Leppala Phone: (505) 948-4794 E-mail: [email protected] Date: Sunday, February 4 Time: 12:15 pm Place: Social Hall

Details: Would you know what to do if someone overdosed in our church, in the park, or even in your home? New Mexico (and the nation as a whole) is in the midst of an opioid public health crisis. Our community has experienced opioid overdose death across all ages and backgrounds. The long-term answers to this public health crisis include prevention efforts and the availability of effective treatment. The short-term answers include keeping people alive when they experience an overdose - treatment only works if the person needing it is alive to receive it. Part of this short-term response is training as many people as possible to recognize and respond to overdoses in a variety of settings, including churches and other community gathering spots. Naloxone is a medication used to block the effects of opioids, especially in opioid overdose, and can literally save a life. It is the equivalent of a fire extinguisher that trained lay people can carry with them. The Bernalillo County Health Council is offering training and naloxone kits delivered through a nasal spray at no cost to participants, and we have scheduled a training after the second service on February 4th. If you would like to attend, please RSVP through the bulletin tear off sheet, or by emailing Becky Leppala at [email protected] by January 28, 2018.

We are delighted to have you worshiping with us today!

Church of the Good Shepherd, UCC is a dynamic congregation with a rich history and an exciting ministry in the community.

Our church is a part of a blend of four major Protestant denominations that united together in 1957 to form the United Church of Christ.

We claim the early Pilgrim and Puritan settlers of this country as part of our heritage, and celebrate the words of Pastor John Robinson, who in his farewell remarks to the Pilgrims as they were leaving for the “new world,” said,

“There is still more light and truth to break forth from God’s holy word.”

We are a church that:

• Takes the Bible seriously, but not literally.

• Worships God with joyful hearts and open minds.

• Includes children in the life and ministry of the church.

• Celebrates creativity and the arts.

• Seeks to be inclusive of ALL people.

• Believes that growth in wisdom and understanding happens at all

stages of life.

• Is committed to work for justice for all people and for the environment.

• Cares for one another, laughs easily, and rests in God’s love.

• Looks to Jesus as teacher, prophet and Child of God.

The mission of Church of the

Good Shepherd is to build a

just world through community

one life at a time.

Church of the Good Shepherd desires

to be an inclusive community that

shares Divine love as a path to peace

and justice in the world.
