An Introduction to our New Parish Council Member Diane Harper

Growing up in a military family, Diane made many moves during childhood, but often attended church with her grandmother. Diane’s teenage daughter expressed curiosity about church, and as Diane had attended the wedding of a friend at St Bart’s and found it to be a beautiful place right in her own neighbourhood, she attended a service at 8:15 one morning. Invited for coffee, where she chose a “blue mug”, she was welcomed by the congregation. She discovered that “This is home!”.

Diane enjoys music, appreciates our support for Cornerstone and is very keen to share information about St Bart’s with non church-going friends. She sees the various concert programs as a way of bringing people into church and is already setting up a Facebook page for St Bart’s through which invitations can be sent out to a wider community. Although she describes herself as “still in the listening mode”, Diane looks forward to making a contribution to Parish Council.

The Calendar ~

Rogation Sunday Next Sunday is Rogation Sunday, which our friends in the United Church call Rural Life Sunday. Three Rogation days (from rogare, to ask) follow before Ascension Day, 40 days after Easter Day. These days herald the summer, just as Thanksgiving finishes it off. They were initiated in the 5th century as penitential fasts of intercession for a wholesome growing season. There would be a procession around the borders of the parish, marking key points with prayers and psalms (esp. 103 and 104). George Herbert pointed out four advantages of the journey: “First, a blessing of God for the fruits of the field: Secondly, justice in the Preservation of bounds: Thirdly, Charity in loving walking and neighbourly accompanying one another … Fourthly, Mercy in releeving the poor.” Today Rogationtide is as close as we get to a spring festival, with leaves appearing and birdsong back to be heard. Ralph Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending (1914) has recently reclaimed its place as Britain’s favourite piece of music, inspired by George Meredith’s poem and the skylark, who soars and sings 200 separate notes per second, a repertoire unmatched in complexity by any other common bird, and creating what Percy Shelley called the “Profuse strains of unpremeditated art” (in To a Skylark). RVW captured the freedom of the heavens before the contortions of society took hold, a contrast more starkly presented by John McCrae’s In Flanders Fields. Our reliance on the fields is less direct than it was for George Herbert’s parishioners at St Andrew’s, Bemerton, but his intentions still resonate, and here we can hear the Horned Lark in our open spaces.

He rises and begins to round, He drops the silver chain of sound, Of many links without a break,

In chirrup, whistle, slur and shake.

For singing till his heaven fills, ‘Tis love of earth that he instils, And ever winging up and up, Our valley is his golden cup

And he the wine which overflows to lift us with him as he goes.

Till lost on his aerial rings In light, and then the fancy sings.

From George Meredith, The Lark Ascending (1881)

The Gospel The Holy Gospel is written in the fourteenth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the 1st verse. (BCP) Glory be to thee, O Lord. (BCP)

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. (BAS) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) Jesus said, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going." Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him." Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.” (John 14:1-14 ) The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ. (BCP) Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS)

A Reading from the First Letter of Peter Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God's sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: "See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame." To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, "The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner," and "A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2:2-10) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.

Thanks be to God.

Stewardship Corner Update May, 2014

~ The Stewardship/ GIFT Continuation Committee has been meeting throughout the winter and spring. We are pleased to report that multi-year pledges to the Diocesan/St. Bart’s GIFT (Growing in Faith Together) Campaign are being honoured and are up-to-date. The GIFT funding being returned to the parish by the Diocese is being received. The GIFT donations have allowed us to install our wonderful Letourneau organ, level the rear of the church for greater accessibility and move the old font. GIFT is a five year program and continues to raise donations and fund programs until 2017.

The news on the parish weekly thank-offerings is also good. The parish budget for 2014, approved by parishioners at the annual Vestry meeting, is set to meet regulatory and Diocesan requirements as well as parish needs. Tracking to the end of April indicates cautious optimism and the year-to-date comparison with 2013 is positive. We are appreciative of the efforts made by parishioners to support parish needs.

There are some parishioners who provide cash donations which are not identified. These givings are important to us, but we would remind parishioners that if your donation is identified and recorded, you will receive a charitable tax receipt at year end. This receipt is beneficial to you as you file your annual (and dreaded!) income tax return.

A Reading from the Book of Acts

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he died. (Acts 7:55-60) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.

Thanks be to God.

Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16

Refrain: Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. Incline your ear to me; make haste to deliver me. Refrain. Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my stronghold; for the sake of your name, lead me and guide me. Refrain. Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, for you are my tower of strength. Into your hands I commend my spirit, for you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth. Refrain. "My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. Make your face to shine upon your servant, and in your loving kindness save me." Refrain.
