Landscape Architecture can improve the lives and health of people who use well designed landscapes and communities. It can also heal the land.
I design landscapes to raise the quality of life for all users. Mixed use development, greenways, and playgrounds in urban situations require particular care in design in order to best serve the users and the health of the community.

EXISTING GARDEN
The design of the central courtyard serving Marbles Kids Museum was an independent final studio project. The courtyard serves the museum, the adjacent iMax Theater, and is a pass-through for the neighborhood. The existing courtyard is out of step with the spirit of the interior of the museum.
Visibility and circulation to the iMax Theater in the rear of the space is a major factor in design considerations. The museums core initiatives were integrated into the design program.
Large scale marbles were used to create active spaces in a variety of settings resulting in a dynamic space that raises the level of visibility for the museum.

The Capital Boulevard Greenway project deals with a site that currently has a channelized urban stream and is mostly paved. This design meanders the stream and allows for interaction. The greenway, running N/S through the site, has nodes of activity designed along the path to invite visitors to stay and recreate. The asphalt on site will be used to create mounds transitioning grade from Capital Boulevard to the park.
Enhanced development spurred by park and greenway trail.

PLANNING :: LARGE SCALE MASTER PLANNINGMontreal YUL-MTL Ideas Competition
The Montreal YUL Design competition was a group project that looked at Montreals A-20 transportation corridor. The goal of the group was to enhance the north south connections for the communities that were dissected by the wide transportation route. The rich heritage of the area and diversity of the people of Montreal was also very important to the group. I created master plan graphics and graphics for the competition video along with compiling the video for the group.

Owens Refuge is part of a larger master plan in a collaboration with NC State University Housing. The master plan is phased to be built over 5 years. This site is scheduled for construction by a multidisciplinary Design/Build studio in Spring of 2013.
It is a contemplative space and is designed as a getaway for students. It is lined with a series of steel i-beams that will allow vine growth and have hammock latches for student relaxation. Biophilic design theories were used to promote regeneration and renewed concentration.

Artists Backyard
The Artists Backyard was a collaborative project between the Department of Landscape Architecture and University Housing at North Carolina State University. A multidisciplinary studio project carried the project from conceptual design to installation and final details.
My involvement in this project was public relations and outreach. I designed a construction sign in compliance with University guidelines. Along with this, I documented the project with time lapse video and on ground shots and created a video that is used as promotional material for the project.

With a group, I documented the build process through time lapse video and on ground photography. Then indivudually, I compiled the images into a movie to showcase student efforts and progression of the project.

Grading Plan :: AutoCAD
This individual design project took a design from concept to 60% complete construction documents in a semester. West Street Sculpture Park was designed to remediate the soils in the space, using phytoremediation. Rain gardens collect water and return it to the water table.
Sculptures, a pergola, and an open space enhance the space for the users.

Plantings were selected based on slope and the plants needs. For example, Juncus effusus is better suited for a low point rather than a slope and was place accordingly.

COGNITIVE MAPPING
Exploris Middle School is an urban based charter school in downtown Raleigh. The children use a gravel parking lot for play space. My research team used a variety of observation tools to determine design recommendations for the site.
GIS AnalysisModeling + Mapping
A variety of GIS analysis projects were done in conjunction with the course : Introduction to GIS. Further analysis was use to determine density of population in Wake County flood plains.
