KATY PERRY: TEENAGE DREAM

Digipak Analysis

FRONT COVERThe front cover of this digipak is unusual as there is no writing involved. Suggesting that Katy Perry is such a big star that her face is instantly recognizable.

The image of Katy Perry is very sexual and suggestive, which will appeal to her male audience. The singers nudity is something that will shock her audience, and creates a unique selling point as she is someone who is often shown to be different and an alternative to ‘the norm’.

BACK COVERThe song listing is in red and so stands out in contrast with the pink clouds, whilst also maintaining the ‘candy’ theme of the whole digipak.

The back cover includes the pink clouds that are featured within the other images of the digipak, and the clouds add to the candy theme whilst also showing how the artist is displayed in high regard as she is ‘up in the clouds’.

The two CD’s have ‘candy’ themed printing on them so that they fit in with the theme of the digipak, but also appeal to the singers younger audience as they display the fun side to Katy Perry and highlight the light-heartedness nature of the album.

There is another suggestive image within the inside of the digipak, displaying Katy Perry staring towards the audience appearing topless (although no suggestive body parts are on show). This will again attract the male audience as Katy Perry is an attractive woman, and she plays on this by displaying provocative images to her audience.

The whole album maintains the candy theme and enforces the vibrant pop feel of the artists genre. This theme allows the audience to know what they will be getting from the album, whilst also highlighting Katy Perry’s bubbly and fun personality.

Inspiration Although I do not plan to make my digipak similar to

‘Teenage Dream’, due to the excessive amount of pink (and nudity of the artist!), there are some good points from this that I can take note of.

The digipak maintains the same theme throughout, which is an effective quality as it enables the audience to understand the genre of the album instantly and the type of music that will be on the CD’s.

In addition, the digipak uses different techniques to appeal to a varied audience, e.g. the candy theme for the younger generation, and the sexual images of the artist to appeal to her male audience. I feel that when making my digipak this will come in handy as I want to appeal to as much of my target audience as possible.
