What is Cystic Fibrosis??
Cystic fibrosis (SIS-tik fi-BRO-sis), or CF, is an inherited disease of the secretary (see-KREH-tor-ee) glands. Secretary glands include glands that make mucus and sweat.
Symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis
abnormalities in the glands that produce sweat and mucusThis may cause a loss of salt. A loss of salt may cause an upset in the balance of minerals in the blood, abnormal heart rhythms, and, possibly, shock.
thick mucus that accumulates in the lungs and intestinesThis may cause malnutrition, poor growth, frequent respiratory infections, breathing difficulties, and/or lung disease.
Treatment for Cystic Fibrosis
Loosen and remove the thick, sticky mucus from your lungs Prevent and control infections in your lungs
Prevent and control infections in your lungs
Provide adequate nutrition
Prevention
There is no way to prevent cystic fibrosis. Screening those with a family history of the disease may detect the cystic fibrosis gene in 60 - 90% of carriers, depending on the test used.
