Dear Community, Junior Achievement provides young people with relevant, experiential programs based upon our three pillars of student success: workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. During the 2012-2013 school year, 28,079 K-12 students experienced JA in 209 schools throughout southern Colorado, a 13% increase in student participation! The case for Junior Achievement has never been stronger. The landscape in which we operate, bridging young peoples’ experiences between education and the world of work, has highlighted the need for our programs. Junior Achievement works strategically with its corporate and foundation partners, such as those you will see highlighted in this annual report, to prepare young people for success both in the workplace and in their personal lives. We do this by helping them connect the dots between what they learn in school and how to apply such after graduation. Whether it is showing students how to successfully apply for a job, manage their money, or how to start and grow a business that creates jobs and drives innovation, Junior Achievement is there, thanks to our local business and education partners. Increasingly, educators are incorporating technology into curricula and JA is staying relevant in this area by adapting to the new ways in which students learn and share information. One example is our goal to bring JA BizTown and JA Finance Park to southern Colorado. Scheduled to launch in 2015, these programs allow: 5th grade students to manage businesses, run financial institutions, promote their businesses on social networks, produce TV commercials, write checks, and vote as they experience a real-life marketplace. 8th grade students to make financial decisions to balance a budget based upon a real-life scenario involving a job, salary, and family situations including food, clothing, housing, taxes, savings, insurance, transportation, etc. Junior Achievement is expanding our pipeline of volunteers by partnering with local institutions of higher education, professional associations, community clubs and bringing new corporate partners on board to help expand students’ access to Junior Achievement programs. Junior Achievement continues to drive positive, transformative change for young people, by empowering them to own their success in the 21st century global economy. We look forward to working with you to achieve that important goal.

elementaryStudents in kindergarten through fifth grade are introduced to the basic personal economic issues, and the role of families and social responsibility in the local economy. They examine planning decisions in a city, economic resources within states and regions, and how businesses need workers who can meet the demands of the job market. The After-School Program teaches personal financial and business skills through innovative and fun activities. The JA curriculum is designed to tie closely with state standards.

middle schoolAlready focusing on the importance of school and career, programs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade encompass business value and decisions while reinforcing the concepts of entrepreneurship and international trade.

High schoolAs students’ interests and needs mature, the classroom focus turns to how economics relate to their lives. They learn basic financial planning, workplace ethics and skills such as budgeting and investing. And through a sophisticated online stimulation, many get first-hand experience in running a virtual business. JA volunteers provide positive adult role models and lead students toward workforce readiness.

Thursday May 23 saw blue skies with light winds and a touch of crisp spring air and Friday May 24 was a perfect golf day. Mother Nature provided for another outstanding year. Golfers were treated to two days of world-class golf at the PGA-level course, luxurious overnight accommodations at the Castle Pines Cottages, meals prepared by the Castle Pines chef, and priceless camaraderie. The tournament agenda included a two-man, best-ball, Stableford Modified International scoring system.

Special thanks to our 2013 Castle Pines Golf Club Member Hosts, James B. Hayes, Austin Tilghman and Will Nicholson, Jr. for inviting us to play at Castle Pines. Special thanks to Mr. Jack Vickers (a Junior Achievement Colorado Business Hall of Fame Laureate) for allowing us to play at the Castle Pines Golf Club. Randy Reynolds once again served as the event chair for the Junior Achievement of Southern Colorado, Inc. Board of Directors. The group was treated to some story telling by Will Nicholson, Jr. who served as chairman of the Competition Committee from 1992 through 2006 for the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta as well as an 11-year run on the USGA Executive Committee just to name a few of his contributions to the world of golf.

2013 marked the 11th year of the Castle Pines – Junior Achievement Invitational. Over a quarter million dollars has been raised from this event to support JA since its founding in 2002. Congratulations to the 2013 Castle Pines – Junior Achievement Invitational Champions: the team of Andy Kalthoff and Rob Mayber.

Colorado Jump$tart on Personal financial LiteracyJunior Achievement of Southern Colorado, Inc. is a proud participating member of the Colorado Jump$tart Coalition. The Coalition is a nonprofit organization representing business, government, and education throughout the state of Colorado. Its mission is to advance the financial literacy of pre-kindergarten through college-aged students by providing youth with life-long financial decision-making skills. Throughout the year, the coalition works to improve the personal financial literacy of Colorado youth by:

• Raising awareness of personal financial literacy.• Enhancing professional development of Colorado educators

on financial literacy issues.• Coordinating and promoting communication and cooperation

among coalition members.• Supporting personal financial education legislation.

JA Job Shadow National PilotNorthrop Grumman was the site of a national pilot for JA Job Shadow. Forty-one middle and high school students and teachers from Patriot Learning Center in Falcon School District 49 spent the day discovering the connection between education and the workforce. Designed to focus on careers, job skills, and culminating in an on-site visit to an actual workplace, JA-Southern Colorado’s task was to evaluate the curriculum fully from the JA staff, student, teacher, and volunteer experience, including all materials, guides, and the execution of a workplace site visit.
