ADMIN

Mark DeMichael was named the 2012 Mid-Central College Conference Athletic Director of the year.

“It is an incredible honor to receive the 2012 MCC Athletic Director of the Year,” said DeMichael. “This award is not a reflection of an individual’s accomplishments but instead on the entire Indiana Wesleyan University Athletic Department.”

MARK DEMICHAEL became Indiana Wesleyan University’s first full-time Athletic Director in July 2008. He took over the position after 11 seasons as the Wildcats’ head baseball coach and assistant professor in the Health, Kinesiology, Recreation and Sport Studies department.

DeMichael has already put his stamp on Wildcat athletics. During his tenure, Indiana Wesleyan has secured a bid to host the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, has started an

annual Athletic Commissioning Service and the Athletic Scholarship Endowment Fund.

The Wildcats reached seven NCCAA World Series during DeMichael’s tenure as baseball coach. Indiana Wesleyan earned runner-up in 2008 and garnered third place finishes in 1998, 2003 and 2005. DeMichael had three student-athletes sign professional contracts with Major League Baseball teams. Brandon Moore was the highest draft choice in Indiana Wesleyan history as the New York Mets selected him in the 14th round of the 2008 June draft. Later that summer, junior pitcher Brandon Beachy signed with the Atlanta Braves.

Beachy started three games for the Atlanta Braves in their playoff chase in the fall of 2010. In the 2009 draft, the Kansas City Royals drafted Josh Worrell in the 30th round. DeMichael served many roles during his time as Indiana Wesleyan baseball coach. He was NAIA Region VIII Baseball Chair and a member of the NAIA National Baseball Rules Committee and the NAIA National Tournament Procedures Committee. In the classroom, DeMichael was Program Coordinator for the Physical Education major.

DeMichael came to Indiana Wesleyan from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts, from where he graduated in 1988. He was the head baseball coach of the Crusaders for three seasons from 1995-98 and was named Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year twice. During that time, DeMichael led Eastern Nazarene to the program’s first ever appearance in the CCC conference championship game in 1997.

Prior to Eastern Nazarene, DeMichael taught physical education in the San Bernardino, California Public School System for six years. While teaching at San Bernardino, DeMichael was the head baseball coach for San Bernardino High School from 1991-95.

DeMichael and his wife Kimberly, who is an assistant professor of education at Indiana Wesleyan, have two daughters, Ashley and Kasey.

NAIA

Throughout it’s history, the National Association

of Intercollegiate Athletics has provided strong

leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports.

Since it’s introduction of collegiate sports, the

NAIA has maintained the highest standards while

administering first-rate athletic programs.

Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped

forward to address the important issues of the

day- be it racial integration in the 40’s and the 50’s

or establishing the first women’s championship

program in 1980. The NAIA has not been afraid

to inact changes while others have watched and

waited.

With it’s major emphasis on educational

development, it was natural for the NAIA to further

strengthen academic eligibility requirements for

the mid-1980’s. All NAIA student-athlete academic

eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester

basis. The All-American Scholar-Athletic program, a

long standing NAIA tradition, recognizes junior and

senior student athletes with minimum 3.5 GPA on

a 4.0 scale.

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered athletic

programs and championships in proper balance

with the overall collegiate educational experience.

Serving higher education in this manner is a

responsibility the NAIA does not take lightly. It

is a relationship built on confidence and trust

strengthened year after year.

NCCAA

The National Christian College Athletic Association is

an association of Christ-centered collegiate institutions

who’s mission is to use athletic competition as an integral

component of education, evangelism, and encouragement.

We serve our members by setting association standards,

developing communication resources, providing

regional/national competition, and partnering in outreach

to our communities and the world.

We are committed to equpping student-athletes and

coaches to make a positive impact.

CROSSROADS LEAGUE

The Conference League, formerly known as the Mid-Central

College Conference has the purpose and function to

promote intercollegiate athletics in a well-rounded athletic

program, maintain high ideals, and promote sportsmanship.

Therefore, the Crossroads League encourages the member

schools to stress the supporting role of athletics in the total

education process and keep athletics in proper perspective.

The Crossroads League is one of the top athletic conferences every year throughtout Collegiate Athletics in the NAIA. Every year, the Crossroads League leaves its mark on the nation as a premier athletics conference.

“My experience at IWU was something that I will be

forever thankful for. The people I got to know and

the times I was able to enjoy are what really made

my time at IWU amazing. The relationships with my

teammates and coaches have meant more to me

than anyone will ever know and will be something

that I can carry with my always.

“The relationships built with the girls over my five

years far exceeded all of my expectations. I will

never be able to thank everyone enough for the

impact and lasting impressions left upon my life. I

take with my countless memories as I begin a new

season in life.”

Breanne Dyer (Miller)

2-time NAIA Academic All-American

“The IWU Lady Wildcat experience is one unlike any

other. When I entered the program my freshman

year, I didn’t expect to be completely changed

inside and out. The IWU experience has more

to do with the people, growth and relationships

than it ever has to do with basketball. I am so very

thankful that God blessed me to be a part of such

an experience and I pray that the Lady Wildcats to

come will have the same, if not better experience

that I did.”

Lindsey Waggoner

NCCAA Academic All-American

CLASS OF 2011

“Being a member of the IWU Lady Wildcats was an

experience that was life changing. From my time on

the court to the time off the court, I was challenged

in aspects of my life. I gained not only knowledge,

but a new family at IWU. It was an experience that I

would never change nor will I ever forget.”

Elaine Hessel

3-time NAIA All-American

“I enjoyed my time at Indiana Wesleyan because of the

relationships that were formed and the life lessons I learned

through basketball. I was able to experience God with a

group of girls that I will never forget.”

Kayla Thompson

NAIA All-American

“For four years IWU was my home where God placed me in

a huge family of wonderful sisters and coaches who deeply

cared about who I was and more importantly...who God is.”

Jessica Teegarden

“The things that I miss most about IWU are my teammates

and the unforgettable memories we made. It was so

comforting to know you had a large group of people around

that cared so much and prayed daily for you.”

Leanne Douglas

CLASS OF 2012

“My experience at IWU changed my outlook on life and

made me the woman of God I am today. IWU will always be

a place I can call home. Being a part of the Lady Wildcat

program meant I could achieve more in the basketball realm

and bring the PROCESS and different things I learned to

other girls I come in contact with and coach. It taught me

that nothing is a given and to always work hard.”

Rachel Steinbarger

“My experience as a Lady Wildcat has changed my life

forever. I never thought that a basketball program could

make such an impact on my life. There were some ups

and downs, but I could not have asked for a better college

experience, or better sisters to share it with.”

Krystal Stoneking

NAIA All-American

“Being a Lady Wildcat was one of the most stretching

experiences. Each day I learned something new about what

it takes to be a leader, to push others and myself, and to

embrace the process. I developed friendships and created

memories that will be cherished for years to come.”

HERO: noun, a person of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his or her brave deeds and noble qualities.

Leah Whittaker, at age 19, became my hero. Leah was a person of distinguished courage, and is admired for the way she bravely

looked a daunting disease in the face and chose to fight it every day. Although she lost her battle on August 16th, 2011, Leah’s legacy

lives on each and every day. The way that Leah chose to live her life for the Lord impacted people all over IWU’s community and had

a special influence on our basketball family. The light and love of Jesus Christ was incredibly apparent in the way that Leah lived her

life, and it was because of this selfless love that she was able to have an incredible impact on so many lives in nineteen short years

on this earth. I was so incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to room with her last year, and thank God that I could call her my

sister. Leah is one of the biggest reasons that I accepted Christ, and for that I owe her everything. She inspired me to be a better

Christian, woman, and teammate in a few short months, and helped me take strides in my life that I didn’t even think were possible

before having her as my roommate. We lost a best friend, a sister, a teammate, and a hero that August morning, but Heaven gained a

precious angel and child of God. Although there are still days where we miss her and feel the pain of losing her, Leah taught us to turn

to God and always trust in his plan and to always be there to love one another and put each other first. It is with her legacy that we play

for our Father in Heaven each game, and always, we play for #30.
