Mayo

Michael Mayo ’02 was invited to attend an SAI Thanksgiving dinner his Junior year at IWU. He walked up to SAI house in painted jeans, old boots, old jean jacket and dirty hat...and was greeted at the door by a girl in a dress. As he observed more ladies in dresses and guys in ties and jackets, he realized right away he was out of fashion but decided to walk on in anyhow. When Michael took his seat, he immediately spotted a beautiful girl at one end of the table, and became embarrassed of his appearance. After dinner, Michael needed to release some stress, so he went to the art studio to work on a canvas. The painting he worked on was eventually in an art show at school, and won an award. A girl at the art show started asking him questions about the work...and eventually Michael recognized Sarah Evans ‘03, as one of the girls at the Thanksgiving dinner table several nights before. For the next SAI Thanksgiving dinner, Michael had nicer clothes, and his date would end up being his future wife and mother of their soon to be two children! Sarah and Michael would meet halfway between the Music and Art building, around midnight, when both buildings would close — where Michael would walk her home to New House (Harriett Fuller Rust House). Though they were both very busy with their degrees, either practicing or painting; they found time to cherish a quiet campus. Sarah and Michael married July 2, 2005 in LaSalle, IL. Their friends and IWU alums, Elisabeth Johnson ’03, Meg Kane ’03, Katie Maietta ’03, Wes Dyke ’02, Jessica Ryan ’03, and Allison Tackitt ’03, attended the ceremony. Their daughter, Carys, was born January, 2008 in Northern Virginia, and they are expecting a second child later this year. The Mayo’s are enjoying their lives together, love visiting IWU from time to time, have enjoyed a recent Art Award sponsorship and look forward to more adventures! 325 N. Valbert“The library is our favorite place. It’s where we first met!”

Faye Brown and Paul Valbert, both ’71 graduates, met in the library under interesting circum-stances. Paul was in a study room with TKE fraternity brothers. Faye was in a study carrel. Paul then told Bob to tell her, “I want to marry her”. Bob did and once again, Faye amazingly replied, “OK, but I’m busy tomorrow”. Over the next month, Paul and Faye bantered back and forth about their upcoming wedding plans. Finally, Paul asked Faye out, and the rest is history. William Bailey ’50 was a TKE pledge, in need of a date for the fraternity’s pledge dance. The clock was ticking, and Bill still had not found a date, when his roommate recommended his cousin Elizabeth Oborn ’50. ZeglisCindy Snyder ’73 and Dave Zeglis ’72

For Homecoming in 1970, Cindy and Dave were paired (AOPi and Sigma Chi) and they met while building their float. As Cindy recalls, the theme was Both Sides Now — Judy Collins was to perform but cancelled — and their float theme was “We’ll Halve Them in the End”. A Titan wielding a sword split an opponent vertically. It was not very well executed, and we didn’t win. Cindy and Dave’s favorite memories at the library, where they would happen to run into each other and The Grill. The Zeglis later married in Morrison, IL on June 9, 1973 with alumni Joan Pettis Priest ’73, Linda Roe Kinsella ’73, Kathy Povlsen Rushing ’71, Keith Jason ’73, Steve Skelton ’71, Mike Rohr ’75, and Wally Kistenfeger ’74 there to celebrate with the couple. Mangold

Karl Mangold ’02 was the student manager at the Starbucks in the Memorial Center. Maria Holsen ’04 applied for a job to work there. Somehow she convinced Karl that her prior ice cream shop job from high school was the perfect preparation to work with coffee, they got to know each other as co-workers and friends. Later, Maria asked Karl to participate in a male body image study she was conducting for a Sociology class and he agreed. The interview was scheduled to last 30-45 minutes, but they ended up talking for over 2 hours. Soon after that, their friendship blossomed into romance. Karl graduated a few months later and Maria planned to study abroad in Scotland for the following academic year, so they decided to apply for national parks jobs in order to spend more time together during the summer. They worked at a remote, mountainous Alaskan lodge for the summer. Karl worked primarily as a prep cook and Maria served the clientèle as a housekeeper. They both worked obligatory dish-washing shifts as well. Their days off were spent hiking mountains and glaciers in the near-24-hour sunlight. During Maria’s year at University of Edinburgh, Scotland, Karl visited on two separate occasions during which they traveled together throughout Scotland and Ireland. When Maria returned to the States, she finished her last year at IWU. Karl had started his first year of medical school. He often traveled to Bloomington on the weekends and they studied together at the (newly built) Ames Library. Maria and Karl married on December 19, 2006 in Davenport, IA. The maid of honor was Maria’s sister, Laura Holsen ’99. Groomsmen: C.J. DeVera, ’02; Jason Buttz, ’02; Sean Price, ’03; Gram Watts, ’02. Usher: John Vrakas, ’00. They still love to travel — Maria recently returned home from China and Karl plans to perform surgeries in Eritrea, Africa during a medical mission trip next spring. They had their first child, August 1, 2009.

King“We consider February 18, 1987 as the starting point of our time together. 22 years and counting.”

Liz Betts ’90 came over the Theta Chi house with Joy Edwards ’90 and Kim Evans ’89 on February 18, 1987. The group of friends wanted to look at picture proofs from a dance that Joy and Kim had attended. The pictures happened to be in the room of Robert King ’89, so they came in and had a seat on Robert’s couch to look through them. Robert thought Liz was cute so he decided to stay in the room and try to be charming. On the way out of the house, Liz, Joy, and Kim decided to rearrange the furniture in the front room of the OX house as a gag. When they got caught, they were thrown into the showers with their clothes on for punishment. Robert ran upstairs to get a clean shower towel and gave it to Liz before anyone else could give her one. A few nights later at an exchange at the OX house with the Sigma Kappas, Liz came over and she and Robert started to talk. During their conversation, the DJ played a slow song and Liz thought Robert was going to ask her to dance. Instead he asked, “Would you like . . . a Mercedes?” She thought that was hilarious and decided then and there that she would give Robert another chance to ask her out. Elizabeth and Robert spent lots of time in the Ferguson lounge freshman year. Their first date was seeing the movie, The Big Chill, and then ordering pizza from Pizza World. One fall day in 1939 I was in the lower level of Presser Hall, among other students coming and going from their lockers, when a young man came to me and said, “I hear you are from Wood River. I have an uncle who teaches biology there, Edward Hopper. Do you know him?” Yes, of course I did. He lived just two blocks from my home, and my sister, when in his class, had been one of his dependable room helpers. Well, this music student was James Winn, and we began getting acquainted. He was a junior, familiar with campus life, and I was still a bewildered freshman. But a strong liking between us set up rapidly. I played cello in the orchestra, and he sat a little behind, playing bassoon, saying he was “watching me,” and walking me home afterward. I soon copied his schedule card in the music office so I could intercept him crossing the campus between classes. Then I slipped into the back of Presser Hall when he had his practice hour on the big organ, so I could listen and watch. Jim was already a member of Phi Mu Alpha, and I was a pledge of Delta Omicron. We went to campus events together, and on October 24th of the next year, he gave me his Phi Mu pin. We were engaged. After his graduation came military service, and then Pearl Harbor. But we were married on Palm Sunday of my senior year (1943), and five of my D O sisters made the trip to Wood River for the wedding. After two years in Europe, Jim returned, continued his music education, and then we settled in church and school work in Clinton, Iowa. Jim and I had 64 wonderful years together.

About Evelyn ChapelBuilt at a cost of $1.8-million and named in honor of Evelyn Howell for her philanthropic gifts and volunteer efforts, Evelyn Chapel is the University’s first dedicated chapel building. It was planned as the focal point of Illinois Wesleyan University’s central campus when ground was broken in 1983, and has anchored the east side of the Eckley Quadrangle since its completion in 1984. Its design derives from the early Moravian architecture in America, relating to the strong spiritual influence of the Moravian Anabaptist movement on John Wesley. Although the overall visual impact is traditional, architect Benjamin Horace Weese extracted the sparseness so apparent in Moravian structures into a contemporary building that harmonized with existing campus architecture at the time of its design. Evelyn Chapel was designed to provide acoustical brilliance for its custom-designed Casavant organ and other musical programs. Contributing to enhanced reverberation time and sound distribution are the vaulted ceiling with unequal facets and the hard, fluted surfaces evident throughout the sanctuary. Visitors to Evelyn Chapel have been particularly aware of the use of re-reflected white light in the sanctuary and narthex. Natural light sources find a focus over the altar in which the sanctuary cross appears to float suspended in space. Gold leaf, hand-applied to the planes of the beveled wood surfaces, attracts and reflects light, bringing it into dazzling focus. The tower cross was fabricated of bronze.Illinois Wesleyan University has provided a springboard for thousands of loving relationships which have lasted lifetimes. Among nearly 20,000 alumni, 3,200 are married to another alum. That makes for 1,600 couples, comprising about 15 percent of the total alumni population.
