Gary Kagiavas13th YearGannon ‘91

G aryKagiavas wasappointed EdinboroUniversity's firsthead coach of theFighting Scotwomen's soccerprogram in Augustof 1996. The formerGannon Universitystandout startedthe Edinboro program that year, andsince that time it

has become one of the stronger teams in theNortheast Region.

In his 12 seasons as head coach, Kagiavas hasguided the Fighting Scots to a 103 100 18 record, including a 13 5 3 finish a year ago. That represented the most wins in school history, and the FightingScots capped it with their first ever postseason victory.

Hosting Indiana(Pa.) in the first round of thePSAC Tournament, Edinboro handed the CrimsonHawks a 3 1 defeat. Slippery Rock bring Edinboro sseason to a halt with a 2 0 victory in the semifinals. It marked the fourth time Edinboro had qualifiedfor the PSACPlayoffs.

In 2006, Kagiavasguided to a 10 7 0 record. All told, the Fighting Scotshave won ten or morematches five times duringKagiavas tenure. Andonce a rare occurrence toshow up in the NortheastRegion rankings, theFighting Scots are now aweekly member of the topten.

The 2003 FightingScots had registered theprevious school record forwins while finishing with a12 7 1 record. Edinboromade its second appearance in the PSAC Playoffs. The Fighting Scots climbed

as high as fourth in the Northeast Region rankingsduring the year. In 2002 Edinboro fell one point shyof qualifying for postseason action, compiling a 954 record.

Over the past several seasons the FightingScot roster has been extremely youthful, yetKagiavas has molded that inexperience into winning teams. The PSACpostseason awards borethat out two years ago, as Kagiavas was named the2005 PSACWest Coach of the Year. It marked thesecond time he had received the award.

Kagiavas' teams accomplished a rarity in hisfirst six seasons, finishing with a better record eachyear. The 2001 Fighting Scots went out and postedan 11 5 1 record, including a school record six gamewinning streak. The Fighting Scots advanced to thePSAC Playoffs for the first time. Edinboro droppeda 1 0 decision to Bloomsburg in its first postseasonventure, but that could not diminish a seasonwhich saw the Scots climb as high as 14th in theNSCAA Division II rankings. Along the way, theScots defeated 13th ranked Slippery Rock, 3 0,while suffering four of its five losses to nationallyranked opponents. Kagiavas was recognized asthe PSAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year.

Thanks to five wins in its final seven contests,Edinboro posted its first winning season in 2000,going 10 8 1. The Fighting Scots posted a fourgame win streak in which it held opponents scoreless for 500 minutes. The team also recorded theprogram's first win over local rival Gannon.

The Fighting Scots weren't without theirgrowing pains, as Edinboro's first ever women'ssoccer edition finished with a 2 14 0 record in 1996.

The ledger improved slightly in 1997, as Kagiavas'second team posted a 5 10 1 finish. The FightingScots improved to 9 10 0 in 1998. That included a 21 overtime win over West Virginia Wesleyan, an outfit ranked second in Division II at the time.

Edinboro saw a run of five straight winningseasons come to an end three years ago followinga 69 3finish, and his Fighting Scots suffered a second straight losing campaign in 2005, finishing at 79 3. Edinboro University women s soccer coachGary Kagiavas can cite a couple of imposing obstacles standing in the way of his team in 2008. Oneis a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference whichadded two well funded teams to an already verycompetitive league, with both competing in theWestern Division, no less. The other is the loss ofall three forwards, and five of the team s six leading scorers.

Call the PSAC West the wild, wild west. Twoteams enter the season ranked in the NSCAADivision II Preseason Top 25. Slippery Rock isranked 17th after finishing with a 17 5 1 record andreaching the PSAC title match. That came thanksto a 2 0 win over the Fighting Scots in the PSACsemifinals. Then there s Mercyhurst, anotherNCAA Playoff team who is ranked 21st after going15 4 3 a year ago while playing in the Great LakesIntercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Throw in Indiana(Pa.), 12 8 0 a year ago, and

an improving Gannon squad, another GLIAC member a year ago, plus always tough Lock Haven, andit s easy to see why Kagiavas feels the PSAC is asstrong as any conference in Division II. TheEastern Division is also strong, with West Chester, the 2007 PSAC champion, ranked seventh.

The West is incredibly difficult, stressedKagiavas, who started the Edinboro program in1996. I think the West is going to be brutal.Mercyhurst is a nationally ranked program andGannon is one of the best funded programs. We ve added two teams who will compete rightaway. Add in Slippery Rock, IUP, Lock Haven andus and that s a strong conference. Cal is reallyfunding its program now, and Clarion is alwayshard to beat. The East isn t much easier, but atleast they didn t add new teams.

Kagiavas also noted that the Atlantic Regionwill have a new look, with the region now comprised of the PSAC and the West VirginiaIntercollegiate Athletic Conference. He views thatas a plus compared to previously having the NewYork Collegiate Athletic Conference, which featured some very strong women s programs.

Now getting back to the loss of most of theteam s leading scorers. This isn t the first timeKagiavas has faced this scenario, but it may be themost dire situation he s faced. All three forwardsfrom last year Angie de Almeida, Ashley Pulman, and Ashley Rucker are gone. de Almeida andPulman accounted for All PSAC West first teamhonors six times, and both were so honored a yearago.

de Almeida finished as Edinboro s leadingscorer with 9 goals and 7 assists for 25 points, anddeparts as the fourth all time leading scorer.Pulman, despite a career filled with injuries, rankssixth in career scoring after finishing with 6 goalsand 4 assists a year ago.

Throw in the loss of Kara Ciacchini, a secondteam All PSAC West performer who enjoyed anoutstanding senior campaign from her midfieldposition, and it s easy to see why Kagiavas is greatly concerned with his team s ability to score goals.

Yet Kagiavas enters the 2008 campaign withhigh hopes, despite a great deal of uncertainty upfront. He guided the Fighting Scots to a 13 5 3record a year ago, the most wins in school history. In the process Edinboro qualified for the PSACPlayoffs for the third time, and picked up its firstpostseason win ever. The 3 1 win over IUP in thequaterfinals also represented Edinboro s first ever

home playoff contest. At the end of the yearKagiavas was recognized as the PSAC West Coachof the Year.

Much of last year s success had to do with astingy defense, and that s what has Kagiavasencouraged heading into this season. The FightingScots posted seven shutouts and held 15 opponents to one goal or less. The core of the defense, plus both goalkeepers, returns intact.

Leading the way is All American candidateAshley Jones, a three time All PSAC West selectionfrom her sweeperback position.

Defensively we re pretty sound, Kagiavasslyly stated. We ll definitely be strong defensively. I think it will be difficult for teams to score onus due to our defensive speed. However, I don ssee us beating teams 4 0 or 5 0. I think you ll see alot of one goal games.

That might be particularly true early in theyear, as Kagiavas must incorporate a host of newcomers into a cohesive unit.

Given that we have two weeks of preseason, trying to coordinate everything in the attackwon t be easy, commented Kagiavas.

Here s a look at the 2008 Fighting Scots, position by position:

ForwardsWith last year s complement of forwards

gone, Kagiavas will look at no less than six players, and as he puts it, we should get one or two players who can score for us .

The lone player with any playing experienceat Edinboro is Elise Falatach. The senior has previously played in the midfield or on defense Shereturned last season after suffering a season ending knee injury in the first game of 2006. Sheplayed in all 21 matches, with 11 starts, contributinga pair of assists. Falatach was a second team AllPSAC West selection in 2005.

The big hope lies with Rachel Dahlstrand, aformer standout at nearby McDowell High Schoolwho was at West Virginia for two seasons beforetransferring this year to Edinboro. Kagiavas notesthat the former All State performer has provenscoring ability and plenty of speed. Now she mustlearn his system and fight off the rust after redshirting in 2007 and playing in just three matches atwo years ago.

C.J. Allen is another transfer to keep an eyeon. She played at Wheeling Jesuit a year ago, finishing as the fourth leading scorer for the cardinalswith 6 goals and 3 assists for 15 points as a freshman.

Four freshmen will also vie for playing time.Amber McLaughlin hails from Burrell(Pa.) HighSchool, where she was a two time All Sectionselection. Melanie Prelec and Amanda Kyc werefour year starters at Slippery Rock Area(Pa.) HighSchool and Sayre Area(Pa.) High School, respectively. Shanea Raabe is also from Slippery Rock, but she missed most of her senior year due to aknee injury suffered in the third game.

MidfieldersCiacchini will definitely be missed, but there

is still plenty of talent returning, including startersMaria Dembrow and Heather Weismiller, a pair ofjuniors. Dembrow looks to rebound from a frustrating sophomore campaign. After finishing asthe team s second leading scorer with 5 goals and7 assists for 17 points as a freshman, Dembrowmanaged just 3 goals and a pair of assists in 2007.

Weismiller, however, stepped up after scoring just one goal in her freshman season. Withfour goals in the finals seven matches, she finished as the third leading scorer with 6 goals and 3assists for 15 points.

Lauren Christy, Leah Thomas, Jessica RexroatHeather Weismiller emerged as a scoring threat

in 2007 with 6 goals and 3 assists.

and Brittany Bidak have all seen plenty of previousaction. Christy has started 18 matches in her firsttwo seasons, most of that as a freshman defender. A year she had four starts.

Seniors Rexroat and Thomas have provenvaluable in reserve roles. Rexroat appeared in 18matches, with a pair of starts, in 2007, finishingwith 2 goals and an assist. Thomas played in 14contests.

Bidak was part of a large group of freshmento see extended playing time in 2007. The sophomore finished with a pair of goals while playing in18 matches.

Lindsay McNell and Emily Dickson saw littleaction last year as freshmen, but look for a biggerrole.

Kagiavas admits that the returnees have theadvantage of experience, but feels that a numberof first year players will push to get on the field. He singled out Jessica Morgan and Taylor Stetkaas newcomers the veterans better keep an eye on.Morgan helped South Park(Pa.) High School to thePIAA Class AA Co State Championship as a senior, along with WPIAL titles as a junior and senior.Stetka hails from Atholton(Md.) High School, where she was a three year starter.

No fewer than four other first year FightingScots also figure in the mix. Trina Brozewicz isactually a redshirt freshman who attended WestVirginia a year ago but did not play for theMountaineers. She was a first team All Stateselection as a senior at nearby Fairview HighSchool, the same program that produced AshleyJones.

Kailynn Noon is another local product. Theformer Meadville High School standout scored 23goals and had 17 assists as a junior, and wasnamed the Meadville Tribune Player of the Year. She missed 12 matches with an injury last year butstill scored 8 goals.

Alexis Dolde was a late addition to the rosterwho was a four year starter at Connellsbille(Pa.)High School.

One other player Kagiavas would love to seecompeting for playing time is Emily Leone. Sheenjoyed an outstanding freshman season in 2006,but missed the 2007 campaign due to ACL surgery, then suffered another season ending knee injurythis spring.

DefendersWhile newcomers figure to play a key role at

several positions, they ll have a tough time earningtime on defense. The Fighting Scots return everyone, including starters Ashley Jones, Ashley Young

and Devyn Agett.Jones just may be the top player in the PSAC,

at least as far as Kagiavas is concerned. She s theanchor, boasted Kagiavas. I don t think there isa better player than Ashley Jones. She s an exceptional player, a 4.0 student, and a leader. Shehates losing, and best of all, she s a nice person totop it off.

Jones earned first team All PSAC West honors for the third straight season, and was also anAll NSCAA Northeast Region selection for the second straight year. The senior had a goal and 5assists last year, but her true value lies in her abilityto control the game from the defensive end of thefield. She has started all 57 matches in her career.

Young started 19 matches last year. She hasplenty of speed and is also a member of the track& field team.

Devyn Agett started 19 matches as a freshman and proved to be a hard nosed performer.Another sophomore, Shannon Seiler, moves fromthe midfield to defense this year after playing ineight matches in 2007.

Nichole Rolik is another sophomore seekingmore playing time at defender. She played inthree matches in 2007.

Kagiavas feels freshman Jamie Warren isgood enough to compete immediately. Sheearned All State honors while playing atNorwin(Pa.) High School.

GoalkeepersLisa Bartolowits and Samantha Cairns shared

the goalkeeping duties a year ago, and will likelydo so again this year. Bartolowits, a senior, was 71 1 with 4 shutouts and a 0.94 goals against average. She ranked fourth in the PSAC in goalsagainst average. She ranks fifth in career wins atEdinboro (15), and is fourth in shutouts with nine.

Cairns is a junior who was 6 4 2 with 3shutouts and a 1.22 goals against average. She is avery talented keeper who hasn t always played upto her talent.

Freshman Katie Stukbauer has a brightfuture. She allowed just six goals in two seasonsas the starting goalkeeper at Medina(OH) HighSchool. Kagiavas feels she will be a phenomenalgoalie in time.

Between the three we have three verygood goalkeepers, Kagiavas pointed out. Rightnow it s Lisa, but who knows by game one. She smotivated to be in goal. I think we re really ingood hands.
