Timing of InsertionTiming of Insertion
IUD insertion is safe and effective at any time during the menstrual cycle
no advantage to the conventional practice of insertion during the first five days of the menstrual cycle
the best time to insert an IUD is when she comes to the health center to request it, if reasonably sure that a woman is not pregnant

RRemovalemoval
IUD removal is usually a routine and uncomplicated procedure
can be done at any time during the menstrual cycle
less than 2% of attempted removals of standard lUDs proved to be difficult
prgilbert/vw-99 7
IInfectionnfection Overall, women using lUDs are about
twice as likely to develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) as women using no contraception
This increased risk of PID is largely concentrated in the first 3 weeks after insertion and is due to poor infection prevention during insertion
Thereafter, the risk is among women exposed to STDs
prgilbert/vw-99 8
n Use long-lasting lUDs and do not remove them unless a woman requests removal, complications develop, or the IUD reaches the end of its effectiveness
n Antibiotics just before IUD insertion are not shown to reduce pelvic infection in the first months of use
n Antibiotics should not be seen as a substitute for good infection-prevention procedures
