Who we are

The British School of Fashion is based at Glasgow Caledonian University’s London Campus and excels in postgraduate education for the business of fashion.

We have a mission to educate, challenge and develop a new generation of fashion and luxury business leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs.

We have a shared mind-set shaped by academic rigour, intellectual curiosity and a commitment to sustainable practice.

We offer a learning experience based upon a global perspective, co-operative understanding and personal aspirations.

We believe it all starts here.

Our History

Our first steps in fashion date back to 1875 and to our founding colleges in Glasgow, Scotland. In that era our primary aim was to provide women with opportunities in design, textiles and retail, with a keen awareness of the economic, social and environmental needs of the time.

British fashion has evolved to encompass so much more than just manufacturing and the education provided by the GCU British School of Fashion reflects those changes.

For decades, GCU has contributed to the business of fashion through the creation of pioneering courses.

We were the first UK institution to offer an MSc in International Fashion Marketing in 2000, and are still one of only a few Universities worldwide to offer a dedicated MBA in Luxury Brand Management.

Our Portfolio

Our portfolio includes four flagship programmes:

• MBA Luxury Brand Management• MSc Luxury Brand Marketing• MSc Fashion Business Creation• MSc Fashion & Lifestyle Marketing

Our programmes share five common features:

1. Content informed by the best contemporary academic research

2. Coverage that reflects the very latest business and market developments

3. Faculty with extensive industry experience

4. Support from Honorary Professor business leaders

5. Outstanding industry connections

OUR INDUSTRY LINKS

Our specialised fashion knowledge is generated through a unique and critical balance of leading edge industry practice and underpinned by the latest academic research.

Working with experts

Fashion business is a major economic driver in the UK and internationally and the British School of Fashion is committed to becoming a leading centre for the understanding of consumer behaviour towards fashion.

By adopting innovative and experimental research methodologies, we are already advancing understanding of fashion consumption – across all distribution channels.

As a result, our teaching is fully engaged with the fashion industry and we have partnerships and collaborations with a diverse range of fashion companies including Marks and Spencer, the British Fashion Council, ASOS, the retailTRUST, Arcadia, Folk, All Saints, House of Fraser and Margaret Howell.

Insight

Our insight is the product of intellectual curiosity and a mature understanding of the realities of doing business in today’s global, omni-channel fashion environment.

In recognition of this, many leading fashion businesses commission us to undertake a diverse range of bespoke consultancy and business development projects.

The knowledge that we generate shares three common characteristics:

• It is rigorous, independent and based upon sound research methodologies.

• The outcomes always have relevance and add value to the fashion business sector.

• It improves and advances the competitiveness of people and organisations.

One of the most important ways we obtain and maintain our knowledge is through the relationships that we foster with our Honorary Professors and Industry Partners.

Honorary Professors

As a result of collaborating with industry, we have built up an impressive list of Honorary Professors who bring an invaluable wealth of knowledge and experience to the University’s programmes. These Honorary Professors include Professor Kenneth Cole (Kenneth Cole Productions Inc.), Professor Henry Holland (House of Holland), Professor Vanessa Friedman (New York Times), Professor Caroline Rush (British Fashion Council) and Professor Imran Amed (Business of Fashion).

As well as helping to inform our programmes and research, our Honorary Professors give exclusive ‘Masterclasses’ to our students and other industry partners on campus.

The events allow our students to hear directly from industry experts and gain valuable insight into how they are where they are today. There is also opportunity for students to network after the event with the Honorary Professors and other attendees from the fashion industry.

We are industry connected.

Page 15: It all starts here. · GCU students and to improve the student experience at GCU London. The Students’ Association play an active role in our Induction Week programme and throughout

The fashion industry is changing. Some sectors have faced a slowdown in sales as consumers shift their spending towards lifestyle goods and experiences.

To redress this, lifestyle brands have emerged in the marketplace. For example, fashion is now sold alongside tech products, watches and homeware, along with in-store experiences, such as yoga classes.

These brands exemplify products or services that embody an individual’s interests and attitudes and seek to inspire and guide the consumers way of life.

Many leading fashion companies haveindicated their future growth opportunitieswill be dependent on their ability tocreate, develop and market products andexperiences within the lifestyle goodssector, rather than solely from the clothingsector.

Capturing these changes, the MSc Fashion and Lifestyle Marketing programme is

designed for students who want specialist knowledge in brand development, buying, merchandising, digital and social media marketing communications, staging the retail experience, design and trend decision making and understanding the connected consumer.

You will then have the chance to explore this theory in a practical setting through work experience, industry visits, guest speakers and live projects.
