Head of pre-prep - introductionDear Parents,

King Henry VIII has been inspiring the Pre-prep children this week - his huge appetite and enjoyment of out-door activities the children have been learning about healthy choices, despite King Henry’s particularly un-healthy habits!

At the start of the week the children planned an investigation into the effect on their heart rate of rowdy peo-ple shouting at a medieval feast. They thought carefully about how to ensure it was a fair test before continu-ing to investigate whether jousting had a similar effect.

Heart rates were certainly raised on Tuesday morning in the new Junior School running club!

Next the children became King Henry’s food tasters and used all of their senses to try and work out the identity of the mystery foods before they were given to the King.

All of the Year 1 and 2 children could have got the job as they were very brave and even tried the blue mashed potato.

Finally the children took time to compare King Henry’s diet with that of his servants and made some interesting observations about Henry’s appearance as a result of his diet: ‘King Henry is more round and the servants are more thin’ said Nicholas in Year 1.

As the children’s enthusiasm for the topic gathers momentum they will be heading into Cambridge next week to learn about coats of arms and clothing for royals - look out for our Year 1 and 2 children hunting for shields in the city centre.

While the rest of the school has been learning about royalty the Kindergarten classes have been inspired by other interests.

For the City this was the arrival of the slide in their outdoor learning classroom and at Madingley it has been a shared love of pirates amongst the new children that have joined the Sapling Class.

In the Early Years classes we are able to design the learning experiences around the children’s interests.

On Thursday the Scooter Class excitedly watched the builders install the slide and as it began to be unveiled the children decided to draw the event then built their own slides and searched for other things to climb down around the City school.

The Sapling Class at our Madingley School have been more interested in pirates and every Wednesday the children that attend the morning session continue their pirate adventure from the previous week. At this young age it is fantastic to see the children wanting to be involved in shaping the environment around them and working collaboratively in their play.

To find out more about our Kindergarten classes or hear the latest news about the children’s hunt for shields in the City centre please follow our new twitter account @SPFPreprep or look at our Stephen Perse Foundation blog on tumblr for photos of these events and daily life at the Pre-prep -http://stephenperse.tumblr.com/.

I wish everyone an enjoyable weekend.
