Guten Tag!  你好! Привет!

Year 8 Global Outlook was a little different this week. The girls had a go at learning three new languages within just under 2 hours!

There were tasters in Russian, German and Mandarin Chinese. Mrs Chang helped the girls choose a Chinese name for themselves and have a go at writing it using Chinese characters. In Russian they were counting with help from Dr Kopanitsa’s Matryoshka, Russian dolls as well as learning the Cyrillic alphabet. With Frau Freeman there was a lion hunt and a catchy song in German.

The response was very positive and the girls clearly enjoyed learning about several different languages and cultures. This will help them to make their language choices next year, as they could start one of them in Year 9.

If you are interested in learning more about languages and the future, there is a very useful document published by the British Council, which identifies which languages are need in the UK for the future. Exciting afternoon of Language Tasters

As seen during Wednesday evening’s Creative Arts celebration, Year 9 Drama students were recently very excited to have taken part in their Stage Combat Module - Armed Combat session with external expert Tom Marty.

Here is a video showcasing what they learnt, please click on the image to view.

Stephen Perse Foundation students Olivia Petryszak (Year 10) and Hannah Brock (Year 11) both took part at the National Holocaust Memorial in London this week.

The event was held on Tuesday 27 January at Central Hall in Westminster, and had an audience of 200 survivors and 1,000 guests including Prime Minister David Cameron, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, and the archbishop of Canterbury, who gathered to listen to music, poetry and writings.

The pieces our students were singing included ‘Elijahu hanawi’, a Hebrew song by Jewish composer Viktor Ullmann, who lived in Prague before the war, written at the time of the holocaust, as well as the more modern song ‘I Believe in the Sun’ by Howard Goodall. The latter is a setting of an anonymous text found written (originally in French) on the wall of a cave in Cologne where Jews had been hiding.

The musicians taking part in the performance for the Holocaust Memorial Day had been working with the renowned cellist and vocalist Simon Wallfisch. Simon comes from a very musical family and both his father and grandmother played the cello. His grandmother, Anita Lasker Wallfisch, was the leader of the women’s orchestra in Auschwitz concentration camp - which is the only reason she survived the war.

Olivia and Hannah took part in the memorial with the Aldeburgh Young Musicians, who last year participated in a course run by Simon Wallfisch dedicated to the holocaust and the music based on and written at that time. His grandmother also attended a few days of that course, and told them her stories of the holocaust and what it was like being alive at the time, especially about being in Theresienstadt, a ghetto concentration camp in which she spent much of her time.

You can watch the BBC coverage of this unique commemoration, using music, poetry and personal testimony to mark 70 years since the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp, by clicking here.

Year 7 will spend the afternoon of Thursday 12 February off-timetable for their second PSHE event under the umbrella heading ‘Managing Change’.

During this afternoon, half of their time will be spent taking part in a drama workshop exploring the issue of cyber-bullying, whilst a second session will introduce them to the concept of ‘resilience’ as a tool to aid them through the highs and lows of life.

If you have any queries about this event, please contact Abbey Jones, PSHE Coordinator ([email protected]).

Our fabulous Year 9 showcase on Wednesday evening proved just how incredibly talented and creative our students are. Parents, families and friends were treated to a fabulous exhibition of work completed in Design and Visual Arts lessons; this was followed by accomplished performances and presentations of extracts of work created in Music, Digital Art and Drama lessons.

We would like to congratulate all of the students in Year 9 who worked so hard to make the event a success.

Nicky left school 2009, having studied A level Design Technology with Mr Bett, and today visited our Year 11 DT lesson to talk to them about her career so far.

Having gone to Brunel university, Nicky now runs her own product design consultancy. Her time at Brunel taught her about how people use products, interact with them, the way people look at products. The most important thing was about designing products around people, rather than the other way round.

Whilst in U6, Nicky won a major design award that has had a major influence on her direction and work. Her innovative toboggan design project, won Young Designer of the Year, a national competition for all schools, sponsored by Brunel. As it happened, one of the judges was then Nicky’s tutor at Brunel University where she read Product Design Bsc - a 4 year course with a year in industry. In her final year, Nicky was responsible for running the ‘Made in Brunel’ showcase event for engineering and industrial design.

At university, Nicky went on to win the Eco Project competition run by M&S. Her design was a simple point-of-sale waste disposal product for homewares aimed at smaller M&S stores usually frequented by commuting customers.

While at university, Nicky worked for Cambridge Consultants and then had a great grounding at heavyweight consultancy PearsonLloyd (working on prototypes for stay-clean chairs, which has now been launched to market).

She has already set up her own product design consultancy, Koti (www.kotistudio.co.uk), with a friend from university, based in Cambridge, mainly focussing on homeware and product design. Koti is ‘home’ in Finnish, a strong influence, and also they mainly design homewares. They are also applying for Design Council funding to enable them to get their own products to market, and to develop their own brand of products.

Clients include John Lewis, Men’s Health, JosephJoseph (redesigning kitchen tools and gadgets); a number of lighting design products; designing a city bike, and Lakeland

Our year 11 students quizzed Nicky on their own portfolio products, and how her products become a reality in a financially competitive environment. Nicky discussed how many products don’t get taken forward, but how important it is to still develop your ideas that push boundaries - often a client can’t see how products can work until you can demonstrate its need to customers.

Pupils’ projects have something of a winning ‘Aura’ to themDeveloper Countryside has awarded the winners of its special Design and Technology competition in partnership with Year 9 pupils that could result in kick-starting a career in design for many of the students.

Nancy and Alice won the award for ‘best overall design’ with their tree stand (pictured) and Jemima and Chanumi won the award for ‘most innovative design’ for their reading chair.

The group of Year 9 pupils took part in the term-long competition in partnership with Countryside, to design furniture that could feature in one of the new Aura show homes, located on Long Road in Cambridge. The project included a trip to view the award-winning Aura development to inspire the pupils and help them get a sense of the environment as well as a presentation and guidance from Jamie Woodrow, Associate Director for Countryside, who co-ordinated the project. Using architectural working drawings, photography and computer generated images the DT pupils worked in pairs to produce prototypes of their designs, which were subsequently judged by Countryside on Wednesday 28th January.

Roger Bett, Head of Design and Technology at The Stephen Perse Foundation School, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to acquire a taste for the real world of design, a project brief relating to a real marketing problem. The girls really enjoyed their visit to Aura and to experience first hand the issues relating to the brief. The girls have worked so hard on their projects and I would like to congratulate all the competitors for their entries to the competition.”

Jamie Woodrow, Associate Director at Countryside, said: “This project has been great to be a part of – since my initial presentation to Mr Bett’s DT workshop last term to seeing the results all the pupils hard work – I’ve been continually impressed with the pupils’ originality and interest throughout the whole project. Ultimately I hope this project has given them some insight into design and career inspiration.”

Jamie continued: “Deciding the winners was tough but my congratulations go to Nancy and Alice for an exceptional design which really captured the leafy environment in which Aura is set and contemporary beauty of the homes. I was impressed by the winners thought and attention to detail with the packaging and that the Tree Stand could be up scaled – used for larger practical piece of furniture such as a coat stand, as well as something smaller like a jewellery stand.

The reading chair which won the innovation prize was novel and Jemima and Chanumi had considered interesting details such as the inclusion of lights in the chair, with wires that were cleverly concealed – well done!

Lastly, I would like to extend an invitation to all parents to come and visit Aura and experience the show homes for themselves.”

For more information on the Aura development you can visit www.auracambridge.co.uk.
