Page 18: Virginia Department of Education - April 2013 1 The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Completer Follow-Up 2013 Follow-Up of the 2012 CTE Graduates

Virginia Department of Education - April 201318

Best Practices

Page 19: Virginia Department of Education - April 2013 1 The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Completer Follow-Up 2013 Follow-Up of the 2012 CTE Graduates

Improving response rates

• Good student contact information is key.

• Multiple contacts are better than one.

19

Page 20: Virginia Department of Education - April 2013 1 The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Completer Follow-Up 2013 Follow-Up of the 2012 CTE Graduates

Divisions decide contact methods

20

Page 21: Virginia Department of Education - April 2013 1 The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Completer Follow-Up 2013 Follow-Up of the 2012 CTE Graduates

Use a 2-step approach

1. Electronic and/or mail (Send

passwords to students and ask

them to respond online or by mail.)

2. By telephone (Telephone students

who don’t respond.)

21

Page 22: Virginia Department of Education - April 2013 1 The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Completer Follow-Up 2013 Follow-Up of the 2012 CTE Graduates

Get started now for next year

• Prepare students for the upcoming survey.

• Collect contact information before students graduate.

• Consider asking for personal and parent/guardian phone numbers.

• Don’t forget college e-mail addresses.22

Page 23: Virginia Department of Education - April 2013 1 The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Completer Follow-Up 2013 Follow-Up of the 2012 CTE Graduates

The digital divide is real

• Social and digital media are great.

• But sometimes traditional methods

are best.
