Dear Parents,

Preparations are well under way for our upcoming School in action morning on Friday 17th October and our annual Open Morning on Saturday 18th October. We do hope you are able to join us and take part in the many activities on offer. Introduction - Acting Head of Dame Bradbury’s

New Library at Dame Bradbury’s by Miss Orange “It’s epic!”

These were the words of a Year 6 pupil on seeing the new library for the first time.

Since the summer term there has been a buzz of activity at Dame B’s with the excitement of new building all around. We had said a fond farewell to the old library and packed up the books into crates while the building took place.

At the start of he Autumn term, we watched as builders, painters and electricians came and went into the old 2S class room. But not until we were actually able to step inside did we realise just what a transformation had taken place and just how amazing our new library would be.

What hits you immediately is the central feature. A fantastic tree whose branches overhang the whole room. And, secreted in the hollow of its trunk, a wonderful place in which to snuggle away to read.

Around the tree are the books - brightly lit on the new shelves. And near the books, plenty of space to sit, lie, curl up, stretch out… whatever favourite way you have to enjoy a book.

“Awesome! It’s the best library in the world,” grinned one of the pupils. “I can’t wait to get reading.”

A record 26 children attended the One O’Clock Talk this week. We were delighted to welcome Ms Lucy Ward (mother of Ned Halligan, Year 4). Ms Ward is a journalist who has worked on many local and national newspapers during her career. Her career choice intrigued many of the children especially when she described such variety as being on a flight with Tony Blair and seeing him in his pyjamas, interviewing dinner ladies, writing reports on murders, reporting on pork pie competitions and driving the Flying Scotsman!

Ms Ward described her rigorous journalistic training and we all had a go at taking notes on a “police statement”. Some of the children did very well, but Ms Ward’s Pitman shorthand won the day as she relayed the report verbatim. “That’s amazing” mused Meg.

The children decided that the key to being a successful reporter were accuracy of information, speed of recording, not missing any key points and writing a great headline. “It was great to know what skills you need” said Suki.

Ms Ward commented afterwards; “It was a real pleasure to talk to (the children). I hope even if they don’t consider journalism as a career, they may now think a tiny bit about news and how it works.” We all thoroughly enjoyed the session and Mrs Bullen-Smith would like to thank Ms Ward for taking the time to come in and help us understand more about a career as a journalist.

Kindergarten have been having another busy few weeks. They had a wonderful morning hosting the Kindergarten children from the Madingley site. Both the staff and children enjoyed exploring around our indoor and outdoor learning spaces.

We went to explore our new library and discovered some exciting places in our new tree to choose books and read them together.

Kindergarten

Autumn is definitely here and Kindergarten have been planting a variety of bulbs that they will be watching closely over the coming months to spot when the shoots may appear.

We are learning to take care of our plants and make sure they get enough sun and rain to grow into spring flowers.

ReceptionReception’s year of Forest School at Rowley Hill Farm has got off to an exciting start!

We’re going on a bear huntOh no! Long, tall grass! We can’t go over it, under it, we’ll have to go through itSwishy swishy, swishy swashy....

After a wet and windy morning the day before, we were very lucky that our Forest School morning was a bright, sunny one with clear blue skies. Everyone was warmly and suitably dressed to keep out cold winds and any rain that might fall!

We went on a long walk and spotted rabbit and deer poo. We collected sloe, hawthorn and elder berries in buckets to make ‘paint’ for decorating the trees. We found beech and hazel nuts and collected even more conkers!

We sat on the side of a farmer’s field to look across the ploughed fields towards Saffron Walden. We spotted St Mary’s Church and the water tower in the distance. Mrs Bicknell reminded us that we must respect the farmer’s field and make sure we don’t trample on the soil as soon seeds will be hidden underfoot!

We always enjoy our hot chocolate and flapjack treat and at the end of the session we sat on our circle of logs and shared with each other our favourite part of the morning.

To help us find out more about the town in which we live, we are going to take the children on a drive around town in our minibus. More details will follow

Match Reports - U11Rugby v Barnardiston | Wednesday 1st OctoberThe B team produced an excellent first performance of the season eventually running out 42-35 winners. After a disorganised start which allowed Barnardiston too much space around the contact areas, Dame B’s quickly levelled the scores after an early Barnardiston try. Missed tackles then allowed Baranardiston to regain their lead through some excellent running from their backs.

Half time arrived and with Dame B’s needing to be more aggressive in the contact areas and support their team mates running with the ball, some excellent tries were scored by Oli Hucknall and Archie Morgan in the second half.

Barnardistons big pack proved hard to shift in the scrums but luckily a much improved tackling performance and greater organisation in defence, ensured Dame B’s held on to the win in what was an excellent game of rugby.

Man of the match was Archie Morgan for his strong running with the ball, excellent tackling and fantastic boot, converting all six tries scored.

Match Reports - U9 Rugby v Fairstead | Wednesday 1st OctoberThe Under 9 team played their first match of the season against Fairstead House and ran out comfortable 40-15 winners. With all boys keen to impress on their first outing of the season, some great rugby was played with excellent ball handling and tackling on display. The first half tries were scored by Charlie(2), Ollie(2) and Ned opening up a 25-15 points lead at half time. The second half resulted in tries for Max(2) and Ned ensuring a 40-15 victory for Dame B’s.

It was difficult to choose a man of the match as the whole team played so well.

Match Reports - U11Rugby v Barnardiston | Wednesday 8th OctoberSt John’s 42 19 Dame Bradbury’s

In an exciting, hard fought game St John’s out scored Dame B’s by six tries to three. In a game where Dame B had a good amount of possession but did not take advantage of this as much as St John’s did with their possession. Charlie U scored a brace of tries, one in the first half and the other in the second half and Henry W scored a try in the final minute of the game. Olie R converted two of the tries.

There was a distinct improvement in rucking from the previous week but work must still be done in adding pace to the ball and retaining possession in contact.

Man of the Match - Charlie U for playing so well away from his normal position.

The B team contested a tightly fought match against St John’s which resulted in a 10-10 draw. After a shaky start for Dame B’s, with St Johns Scoring a try within the first couple of minutes, Dame B’s began to play with more aggression. It was the forwards who caused St Johns trouble with excellent rucking and powerful scrummaging. Oli Hucknall levelled the scores at 5-5 with a great individual. Dame Bs spent much of the remainder of the first half in St Johns half of the pitch. Scoring in the second half followed the same pattern as in the first half with St Johns scoring first before Robbie Kew scored from 5 metres. Both teams were unlucky not to add points to their scores as on two occasions, conversions hit the crossbar before bouncing back towards the kicker. An enjoyable game and fair result on the balance of play.

Man of the Match was Oli Hucknall for his excellent tackling and superb individual try.

Match Reports - U9 Netball v Fairstead House | Wednesday 1st OctoberFairstead House 2-8 Dame Bradbury’s

On Wednesday 1st October Dame Bradbury’s U9 Netball team travelled to Newmarket to play Fairstead House. The team were very excited for their first game of the season and this led to a frantic start to the match with Fairstead scoring inside a minute. Dame B’s responded quickly with Chloe Turner and Isabel Rumsby linking up well in the centre of the court. At the end of the first quarter Dame B’s led 2-1.

The game settled down in the second quarter with the introduction of Chloe Folkes and Harriet Nicolson keeping the away team on the front foot. At half time the scores were still close with Dame B’s ahead 3-2. In the third and fourth quarters Dame B’s took contol with great defensive work by Kitty Tilston and Caitlin Wade preventing the opposition from scoring. In attack Isabella Sabin and Zoe Clulow scored some great goals and as the final whistle sounded Dame B’s had won 8-2. Player of the game was awarded to Captain Isabel Weston who controlled the game working tirelessly at centre.

All of the girls should be very proud of the teams performance especially those who were making their debut for the school team.
