The multi-room AV market has moved rom the domain o wealthy mansions and into ourhomes. We want our entertainment to disappear into the walls. The TV sets need to beslim and mounted discretely against walls. The magnitude o boxes, like Foxtel and Blu-Rayplayers, are being hidden in one location and distributed around the house.

The ongoing costs are low, due to less hardware, power and rentals, but it soundscomplicated, right? Let's discuss what's better... 1.) Give up and get a pay TV spare roombox 2.) Distributing pay TV over powerlines or 3.) Distributing pay TV via your antennasystem.

01 Rent a spare room pay TV box or distribute it around the house?

A couple o actors needs to be considered:

Installation costs the major provider charges around $150 all up*, but there arepromos and more basic boxes which will reduce costs.

Physical impact you'll need considerable space or a pay TV box, while distributionsolutions are more quiet and discrete.

How you use the box would you like to keep your recordings on dierent boxes orkeep all the recordings in one place?

Ongoing costs the rental costs can be around $25 per room*, while multi-roomdistribution is generally ree. So what's the cost over the ull term?

Content i you have kids, what's okay or the parents room, may not be okay or thekids. A spare room box might give you more exibility.

WIRELESS IR

Inrared (IR) requires line-o-sight betweenthe remote control and the device thatyou are controlling. Unless you live in aglass house, you'll need to re-transmit thatsignal. The easiest way to achieve this is viawireless IR repeaters, like the Pro2 IRE12(see right).

The general adage in the industry is thatwired is still better than wireless, but idistances are small, then wireless is veryconvenient.

IR OVER COAXIAL (TV CABLE)

Coaxial TV cable runs to all our TVs aroundthe house. As well as carrying standard TVsignals, we can also run other products inthis cable using modulators (see right).

Commonly, security cameras or Pay TV arecombined into the TV signal. When the TVsare re-tuned, we have additional channels.I you want to control the Pay TV box, we'llneed to use either wireless IR, a systemthat runs over data cable or you can use thePRO1188 IR kit or coaxial cable.

Up until now, the PRO1188 coaxial IRsystem was not expandable as most TVsplitters would interere with the voltage andIR signal. Recently we successully tested

the system with ChannelPlus splitters withgreat success. Running IR systems throughyour existing TV system is now a greatalternative. For applications involving Foxtel,we guarantee that it works well.

EQUIPMENT SETUP OVER IPSetting up equipment takes time and thereore money. Having to do this with aremote control becomes a test o patience and skill! Menus need to be logicaland will oten involve 3 or more layers o menu.

The industry's best products attempted to pre-confgure their products and includeautomatic eatures ie. auto-tuning on TV sets or auto speaker confguration (upon

the connection o the receiver's microphone). With products including Ethernetports, we can now customise our settings over a computer.

Recently we played with the latest Resi-Linx Digital Modulators, although they arealready preset to Australia, the renaming o sources was a cinch. You can thensave the settings and clone them across to other units.

From the screenshot, we can see that we've renamed one source 'Security-DVR'and another 'Foxtel'. You can also play with other settings like attenuation, outputchannel or any other setting. Expect to save more time and less stress with theseeatures...
