The traditional household would have 1 TV and a pile of AV equipment below the TV–but times are changing. TVs are mounted on walls, they look better and are out of reach of little fi ngers. So how do we get to watch what we want from each of these TVs? We can't stick boxes below or behind each TV.

The solution here is modulation.

The special feature that is required is IR support to control the device. It seems that only Resi-linx offers this solution.

The idea isn't new. For analogue TV, the Clipsal Starserve system was hugely popular in its time. Its simple, cheap and reliable. Foxtel for example will appear as just another TV channel on your Free-To-Air channel list.

If you are upgrading a Starserve system to digital, its simply a matter of "unplug, plug and play". If you're planning a new system, give us a buzz.

The Standard Defi nition RLDM1101 box is the most popular due to its low price point. High Defi nition has quickly dropped in price and for TV screens that are 40" plus, it's probably necessary.

The models are either RLHD1000 or HD1600, depending on the TVs capabilities.

The higher-end AV Receivers like the RXA1030 (and above) have loads of inputs for all your sources. It will convert even basic sources like VCRs to HDMI. It then has 2 HDMI outputs for your main room and a spare room.

The nifty thing about amplifi ers like the RXA1030 is that they can send the same source (say Foxtel) to both rooms or 2 different sources to 2 different rooms. That means that the kids can watch a Blu-ray in the living room, while you watch Foxtel in the bedroom.

Most AV Receivers that have multiple zones don't offer this feature. Most will just split the one source.

You need to relay the IR signal also, so the HDMIC6PRO will send the Audio, Video and IR to the second TV.

Because the AV Receiver has smarts like up-conversion and the Pro2 HDMIC6PRO has a completely uncompressed signal, the result is impressive.

Also, because the AV Receivers are app controllable, its easy to operate.

The RLBV2100 is arguably the only budget matrix system that can allow:

• Multiple sources (4 sources max).

• Semi-discrete IR control for operating say 2 Foxtel boxes at the same time.

• Digital audio for if you want to add home theatres to certain rooms.

• Analogue audio which can be plugged into zone amplifi ers like the POWERPRO300 for audio only zones.

• Resolutions of 1080p / 1080i / 720p / 576p / 576i

• Foxtel / iQ compatibility

Let's revisit the Resi-linx house and see what we can do with the RLBV2100.

In the setup below, the equipment is housed in a cupboard, out-of-sight. This household has 2 Foxtel boxes, a Blu-ray player and an Apple TV box.

Each bedroom has a TV, plus we have one TV in the living room.

The household have elected to have the living room as the priority zone for Foxtel. This means that you can control the fi rst Foxtel box from the living only. The control of the second Foxtel box is shared between the

bedrooms. You can watch either Foxtel box from any TV.

Since the living room has a home theatre receiver, you can use the digital coax audio output for better sound. The TVs in the bedrooms all use the analogue audio outputs.

The remaining outputs are being used for audio in the ensuite bathroom, the garden area and the balcony.

The bathroom is powered by a McLelland AMP-D20 and connected to humidity resistant speaker like a B&W CCM362. The outdoor areas require lots more power,

so a McLelland zone amp is required. The McLelland POWERPRO300 will turn itself on when it senses an input. Earthquake outdoor speakers can be used on the balcony and in the garden. The Earthquakes come in 3 sizes depending on space and required power.

The Apple TV source will allow them to browse their music collection from a phone or iPad and select the music that they want to play outside.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT HEADPHONE?

Headphones have been a booming market segment, due to over 1 billion portable devices in use. Now we've had an explosion of brands and models. Understandably, making the right choice becomes increasingly complex. The good news is that the fl ood of product has meant that you can get the benefi ts of a brand name without such a premium price. There’s probably no bigger name in headphones than Sennheiser. They have dominated technical innovations and high-end audio for half a century. Let’s check out some of the bigger bargains from Sennheiser and how to choose the right model.

OVER HEAD – COMFORT, SOUND, ISOLATION, STYLE

Here we have a mix of open and closed headphones. Open headphones are lighter, but it may mean that everyone around you has to listen to your music. You also have a mix of headphones that sit on your ears, called supra aural, and headphones that cup your ears, called circumaural (HD419 & HD429).

Supra aural generally won’t do a great job of blocking out environmental noise, but are more compact. All of these models are made for portable devices. They include the PMX60-II, PX100-II, HD219, HD229 and the PX200-II.

The PMX60-II goes around the back of your head. This is ideal for people who don’t want to mess with their hair, have piercings or like to wear hats.

EARBUDS – PORTABILITY & VALUE FOR MONEY

Earbuds are particularly popular for iPods, smart phones and other portable electronic devices. They plug the ear hole, insulating external noise for when you’re out and about.

All but one of these models are 16-32 Ohms, meaning any lower power audio device should deliver suffi cient volume, especially considering sensitivity.

Generally entry-level earbuds are $20-$30 retail as in the case of the MX270 and MX271. The other models are $50-$70 retail, making them mid-level earbuds. Unless you’re going for higher-end headphones, you should be satisfi ed with any of these models.

Noise cancelling headphones create an acoustic mirror image of the outside noise, effectively cancelling it out. They are ideal for cancelling out the drone of an aeroplane or air conditioner. If you are a regular or even an occasional traveller, these things will allow you to listen to in-fl ight movies and music for the fi rst time. In other environments, you are better off switching off the noise cancelling mode as it is more likely to degrade sound.

If your budget is under $200, it is often suggested that noise isolating earphones may be a better choice.

COMMUNICATION

For the occasional VoIP user or someone on a tight budget, these 3 Sennheiser headsets are popular.

They are single-ear (monaural) headsets that are lightweight and adjustable. The PC11 supports use with either the right or left ear. If you like the look of the PC11 or PC21-II, but need a USB socket–don't worry–the Pro2 PA2295 is a USB to headphone / mic adaptor.

WIRELESS

Wireless headphones are hugely popular for watching TV and allowing more freedom for the listener. There are 2 elements to consider here. The wireless transmission method and the quality of the headphone itself.

The lower cost wireless headphones tend to be the line of sight IR and wireless FM. The preferred technologies are 900MHz and Digital 2.4GHz. In most situations, 2.4GHz Digital is the clearest, but 900MHz is superior in its ability to pass signal through walls.

HIGH-END + HI-FI

High-end headphones are generally high impedance, open headphones. This means that portable, battery powered audio devices like iPods will struggle without some assistance.

The user will also listen to music in a quieter environment. Hi-Fi systems or say music instruments with headphone outs like a Clavinova will be suitable. In part, this is why the connection cables are longer than conventional headphones.

If you have a source like a PC, then a DAC like the new Denon DA-300USB would deliver a much better result.

DJ + MONITORING

Sennheiser are probably not recognised as a DJ headphone brand, despite them making these wildly popular cans for a long time. They have those fl ippy, fl exible earpieces like DJ headphones. They are tough and isolate ambient noise. So, the Germans at Sennheiser ask, "vot ist missing?!" In short, other DJ headphones tend to slowly crush your head between the earpads, making a daily commute on the train unbearable. If the crushing cranium doesn't get you, DJ headphones will inject a melon popping amount of muddy bass to fi nish you off. Sennheiser have surprisingly decided to make a comfortable, yet acoustically capable series of headphones that look good. Shame on them!

Some years ago Resi-linx released 3 Bluetooth products, the RLBT110 and RLBT120 audio receivers and the RLBT100 amplifi er. These devices have been installed in houses, shops and commercial premises around Australia.

The audio receivers have 2 special features, the class 1 standard that allows up to 15m transmission distance for the RLBT110 and 25m for the RLBT120. The second special feature is the ability to relabel the device via PC. This means that you can identify zones as say 'balcony' or 'kitchen'.

The RLBT100 continues to be a huge success. It can be hidden in the ceiling and connected to power and speakers. It's a class D amp, so it runs cool and effi ciently. It also has great range (up to 25m) and the ability to label the amp.

Some of extra features are the ability to connect up more audio zones via data cable.

This is the only component sized DAB+ Tuner in this price category. Its competition either includes internet radio functionality, like the Sangean and Sherwood or is targeted at audio fi delity, as in the case of the Yamaha TD500B.
