Once the analogue signal is gone, you will need a

television set with an integrated digital tuner or a

set-top box to watch free-to-air television.

Analogue transmissions will start to be phased out within 12 months starting in Mildura (Melbourne in 2013). Unless you have a relatively new TV with an in-built digital tuner, or a dedicated SD or HD set top box, you will no longer be able to watch free-to-air television. So why talk about it now, when clearly it won’t be an issue for another few years for Melbourne metro areas? There are clear benefi ts in switching to Digital TV. When set-up properly, you can enjoy better quality image and sound. While analogue TV signals tend to produce grainy pictures, eg pictures with shadows, when the signal is not optimal, digital signals tend to give us a lot more leeway, and as a general rule we can state that when you have a signal, it will be perfect. Digital TV also provides additional channels (like ABC2, SBS2, and HD only variants of all channels).There are two types of digital TV transmissions: Standard Defi nition (SD)SD broadcasts provide widescreen picture with DVD equivalent picture quality. The resolution is 576i (576 horizontal lines interlaced). It is broadcast with MPEG digital stereo sound (similar to CD quality) although some programs may be enhanced with Dolby Pro Logic or Dolby Digital surround sound. This is the standard that is now available 24 hours a day and it's a marked improvement from the analog signal. High Defi nition (HD)HD broadcasts also provide widescreen pictures, but they have an even sharper image with up to twice the horizontal and almost three times the vertical resolution of SD. Due to bandwidth restrictions, there has been some debate by the public broadcasters over what constitutes "high defi nition". However 720p is the universally accepted standard for a minimum HD picture resolution, and consists of 1280x720 pixels at 50Hz progressive. The maximum resolution that the broadcasters transmit in is 1080i (1080 horizontal lines interlaced). Although HD content is not as readily-available as SD content, the minimum number of hours a TV channel must broadcast in HD is set by the government and almost all the free-to-air channels are meeting, if not doubling their quota and this number is increasing everyday.
