Iceskating Poems by Room 5 Butt-breaking, sore, and aching, Are only a few ways of saying my day. Helmets and skates, and flimsy gloves, I heard too much of these words, I may be going insane. Falling, laughing, with some crying, And very cold, but I pushed through And fell hard… Very hard… Billy Garbutt

I was racing fast I hurt my knee. I got a hot chocolate, resting. I had lunch laughing.

I skated on slippery ice... Slowing down!

OFFICIAL SECTION

Kia Ora and Welcome to TAN What a chilly week we have had; great for iceskating, and at least we have the snowy hills and blue skies that make August such a great month in the Mackenzie Country.

On Monday we had adviser Nicky Tempero from Core Education working with teachers on digital technologies.

Rooms 4 and 5 got their iceskating trip away on Tuesday, in cold clear conditions and enjoyed tubing and skating at the Tekapo rink. I have heard the students were very well behaved and the parent support fantastic. Slightly more students seemed to enjoy tubing more, but the number skating said they felt they learned more over the course of the day.

Also on Tuesday we got the first of the class skiing trips away, with around twenty M3 to Year 13 students getting a full day on the slopes, including lessons. A bonus was seeing some of the best skiers in the world busy training, as the American World Cup team is up there at the moment, including current World Cup Slalom champion Mikayla Shiffrin.

Wednesday saw a group of Year 7 and 8 students go to Timaru after school for the Aoraki Maths competition. The Year 7s were 6

th out of about 20 teams, while the Year 8s were a bit

further down the track in quite intense competition, dominated by Ashburton Intermediate this year. Thanks to Miss McLennan and Mr White for driving them down and back – getting back after 10pm at night makes for a long day! A similar effort will be involved this evening, with Mr and Mrs Potter accompanying the Year 9s and 10s to their competition. Best wishes to them!

Yesterday we had the official School Photo day. Most of the photos were taken in the MPR, as it was too cold outside at our normal place at the entrance to school. The exceptions were the House and Whole School photos taken outside – this time using a drone instead of a photographer on the school roof.

Coming Events: On Monday six Italian students, aged 11 to 16, arrive for two lots of three day stints at school as our guests. They are ski racers, out in New Zealand with their coach, but have said they would like to experience some NZ culture and learn what our schools are like. We are looking at completing requirements to host International Students over longer terms, so this is an opportunity to see what it is like and evaluate how we can best mutually benefit from the experience.
