Let’s look at some of the many funiculars in the world…going up with history! A funicular is a railway that is used on steep inclines where two counterbalanced cars are linked by a cable. When one goes up, the other comes down. The rail cars are built specifically for the grade of the incline the funicular is climbing so that passengers remain horizontal riding up or down – and, yes, the cars look odd! The oldest funicular in the world is be- lieved to be the Reiszug, at Hohensalzburg Castle (built to transport sup- plies) in Salz- burg, Austria. It was first documented in 1515 by Cardinal Mat- thaüs Lang who became the Archbish- op of Salzburg. The Reiszug is privately owned but an- other funicular, Festungsbahn, dating from 1892, is open to the public going to the same castle. Most of the old funiculars have been up- dated so that instead of ropes and human or animal power, they are operated by electricity. Older funiculars had four rails until Profes- sor Thaddeus Lowe came up with the idea using three rails in 1893 with the Mount Lowe Railway in Altadena, CA. A four-rail section in the middle allows the cars to pass. Wellington, New Zealand is a hilly city where private funiculars are common. The public Wellington Cable Car (a funicular) is a widely recognized symbol of the city. It passes through three tunnels and over three bridges. The Wellington Cable Car Museum is at the top in the city of Kel- burn. turn the page for more! Los Angeles that dates back to 1901. The name does not contain an apostrophe…even though it is not grammatically cor-rect!Angels Flight has operated at two loca-•tions. For 68 years it was operated with a good safety record in the Bunker Hill area. When the area underwent redevelopment the components were put into storage for 27 years. In 1996 Angels Flight was re-built and reopened a half block south of the original location. In 2001 an accident occurred and it closed again. Today, the original cars, Sinai and Olivet, and the rest of Angels Flight are almost ready to reopen! Many funiculars are listed as historic and •preserved for us to enjoy. Whether called incline railways, inclined planes, cliff rail-ways, elevators, or lifts …all serve to move people or things up and down!

GOING UP! (continued)

J.K. Graves, a former mayor, senator and •banker in Dubuque, Iowa, wanted more time for lunch and a nap… living on top of the hill, his buggy ride to the bottom for work took too long. He had a one-car fu-nicular built for his private use in 1882. In the late 1800s the Fenelon Place Eleva-tor Co. formed and the funicular became public, revamped with a streetcar motor, turnstile and steel cables. In 1977 a major overhaul was done and it is still opera-tional today. Great view of three states! The Fenelon Place Elevator is said to be •the shortest and steepest scenic railway in the world. It is 296 ft. (90 m) in length and transports passengers 189 ft. (58 m) uphill.Another short line…said to be the short-•est funicular in the world, is in Zagreb, Croatia. It was built in 1890, is 216.5 ft. (66 m) long and the difference from top to bottom is only 98.5 ft. (30 m).The Duquesne and Monongahela In-•clines in Pittsburgh, PA were built in 1870 and 1877, respectively, and are still oper-ational. Through the years Pittsburgh has had 17 funiculars with the Monongahela being the oldest continuously operating in the U.S. Also in Pennsylvania, the Johnstown In-•clined Plane is large enough to haul wag-ons, horses, and vehicles up a 70.9% grade. It was built in 1889 when new resi-dentialareasopeneduphillafterafloodand has helped with flood rescues in1936 and 1977. The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway in •Chattanooga, TN carries passengers one mile (1.6 km) on what is claimed to be the world’s steepest passenger railway, a 72.7% grade.Between 1883 and 1932, there were 29 •funiculars in Valparaiso, Chile. It is the principal port and only large city in Chile builtonhills.Thefifteenfunicularsinop-eration today are an integral part of the transit system. The Canadian side of Niagara Falls in •Ontario has the Horseshoe Falls Incline. It does not descend into the gorge below the falls like past area funiculars. It was built in 1966 for access to businesses above the falls. The Funiculaire du Vieux Quèbec in Que-•bec City originally used a water ballast system of propulsion in 1879. It was con-verted to electrical power in 1907. It links

the upper and lower parts of the only city in North America with historic city walls. The only water driven funicular still in •good shape operating today is the Brom Jesus Funicular in Braga, Portugal.Several funiculars have been built in •the Rocky Mountains of Colorado but the only one still operational is at Royal Gorge.Itwasdifficulttobuild, withgranitemountain walls looming around it. It de-scends 1500 ft. (457 m) to the Arkansas River with great views of the Royal Gorge Bridge overhead. The Katoomba Scenic Railway is part of a •large privately-owned tourist attraction in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. It was built in the 1880s as part of a network of trams for a coal and shale mining operation.

Niesen Moun-•tain, often called the Swiss Pyra-mid, in the Swiss Alps is home to the Niesenbahn Funicular which was completed in 1910. It is the longest funicular in Europe with the longest stairway in

the world beside it. The stairway is opened to the public once a year for a run. With 11,674 steps, training is needed! “Funiculì, Funiculà was a song composed •in 1880 by Peppino Turco, an Italian jour-nalist, and set to music by Luigi Denza to commemorate the opening of the funicu-lar at Mount Vesuvius in Naples, Italy. The song gave the funicular worldwide fame. It was built on an active volcano, and af-ter several eruptions was destroyed in 1944. The area around Mount Vesuvius was made a National Park in 1995.Angels Flight is the name of a funicular in •

The Importance of Changing Your Oil

Oil is very important to the proper operation of any engine. Oil helps to clean, cool, and lubricate many different parts of the engine. It is very important to get regular oil changes because old, dirty oil can harm your engine in many different ways. It could cause your engine to over heat or worse, seize up. If there is not proper lubrication in your engine, parts can get stuck and stop moving, causing irreversible damage to your car. Sometimes you may need to replace the whole engine because of not changing oil regularly. If your car happens to leak oil it is important to check it often to make sure you have just the right amount of oil at all times. If you don’t you may be very sorry. Oil maintenance is very important to the overall health of your car.Neighborhood Lube and Repair has the dedicated and knowledgeable auto technicians to care for your car. While changing your oil they will visually inspect other aspects of your car such as belts, tires, hoses, brakes, coolant, filters, windshieldwiperfluidandmore.TheaverageAmericandrives 12,000 miles a year. If you change your oil regularly every 3,000 miles that means you only take your car into Neighborhood Lube and Repair 4 times a year. Not only do you get the oil changed, but your car gets a “check-up”. That’s a pretty good deal

when you think about it – what would you pay to go to the doctor 4 times a year for a check up? Your car is important to you and probably cost you a good chunk of change – isn’t it worth the 10 minutes or so it takes to bring it to Neighborhood Lube and Repair to get it checked out?Let’s see what happens if you don’t stop at Neighborhood Lube and Repair to get your oil changed… First, the oil gets dirty and “gunky”. The dirt in the oil acts as abrasive sandpaper on your engine parts and begins to wear down the soft metal your engine “guts” are made of. Your oil is the life-blood of your car; now your car is infected with grit and debris. By not stopping in to Neighborhood Lube and Repair, you don’t notice that your coolant is leaking into your oil. The coolant is hazardous to the engine and begins to corrode that expensive piece of mechanical engineering that is the heart of your car. Because your engine is “sick” it is not functioning as effectively. Your gas mileage goes down. Winter comes, the rain freezes at night and in the morning as you’re driving in to work, your car slides out of control – because you haven’t taken your car in to Neighborhood Lube and Repair, they couldn’t tell you that the treads on your tires were worn.So what has this cost you? An engine rebuild or new engine. Gas. Perhaps even your car itself and the safety of the passengers not only in your car but for others on the

road. Afraid to take your car in because an auto mechanic might tell you that your car is in need of t h o u s a n d s of dollars of repair? That won’t happen at Neighborhood Lube and Repair! The honest technicians will let you knowwhattheyfindandnottrytosellyouany unnecessary repairs.Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish! Take your car in to Neighborhood Lube and Repair TODAY. What if you haven’t gone 3,000 miles since your last oil change? You should still stop by Neighborhood Lube and Repair. Pick up a money saving coupon for your next oil change, take a look at their price board for other car maintenance and repairs such as belt and hose replacement, tire rotation and wheel alignment, engine flushing,A/CCoolant recharge andmore. Not only will you be impressed with their prices, you will be impressed with their quality customer service. Neighborhood Lube and Repair is located at 5574 S. Gibraltar Way, at the northwest corner of Smoky Hill and Himalaya in Centennial. Give them a call at 303-617-4777 today and SAVE THOUSANDS on possible future engine repairs!

It was British novelist Terry Pratchett •who made the following extremely sage observation: “Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying ‘End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH,’ the paint wouldn’t even have time to dry.”You probably don’t think much about the •fees charged at ATMs, but maybe you should start. That $1 here, $2.50 there really adds up -- to more than $4 billion every year in the U.S. alone.Do you suffer from prosopagnosia? Un-•less you’ve suffered some kind of injury to your brain, probably not. Also known as face blindness, prosopagnosia is the inability to recognize familiar faces. The Goliath frog of West Africa can reach •up to a foot in length and weigh more than 7 pounds.Wimbledon, played in the United King-•dom and one of the four Grand Slam events, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. Every year at the event about 42,000 balls are used.If you’re a fan of the tiny, rubbery candy •known as the Gummi Bear, here’s some good news for you: The world’s largest Gummi Bear is now on the market, avail-able for about $30. The equivalent of 1,400 regular-size bears, the giant candy weighs 5 pounds. The Campbell’s Soup paintings by Andy •Warhol have become iconic, with collec-tors paying up to $11.7 million to own one.Thevery firstoneever sold,how-ever, cost only $100. That was way back in 1962, and the buyer was actor Dennis Hopper.

Thought for the Day: “Why is it that our memory is good enough to retain the least triviality that happens to us, and yet not good enough to recollect how often we have told it to the same person?”

The banker fell overboard from a friend’s sailboat. The friend grabbed a life preserver, held it up, not knowing if the banker could swim, andshouted,“Canyoufloatalone?”“Obviously,” the banker replied, “but this is a heck of a time to talk business.”A very homely person made an appoint-ment with a psychiatrist. The homely per-sonwalkedintothedoctor’sofficeandsaid,“Doctor, I’m so depressed and lonely. I don’t have any friends, no one will come near me, and everybody laughs at me. Can you help me accept my ugliness?” “I’m sure I can.” the psychiatrist replied. “Just go over and lie face down on that couch.”With more than twelve billion catalogs being mailed annually, it’s little wonder that marketers are distributing mailing lists any-where possible. In one particularly cruel move, the proprietors of a chocolate cata-log purchased the mailing list of a weight-loss organization. Chocolate sales rose al-most immediately, but the weight-loss group wised up and now keeps it clients’ names to itself. An investment counselor decided to go out on her own. She was shrewd and dili-gent, so business kept coming in, and pretty soon she realized that she needed an in-house counsel. The investment banker began to interview young lawyers. “As I’m sure you can understand,” she started off withoneof thefirstapplicants, “inabusi-ness like this, our personal integrity must be beyond question.” She leaned forward. “Mr. Mayberry, are you an honest lawyer?” “Hon-est?” replied the job prospect. “Let me tell you something about honest. Why, I’m so honest that my father lent me $15,000 for my education, and I paid back every penny theminute I triedmyveryfirst case.” “Im-pressive. And what sort of case was that?” asked the investment counselor. as he had never held a golf club in his life. “Not to worry,” said the Cardinal, “we’ll call America and talk to Jack Nicklaus. We’ll make him a Cardinal, he can play Shimon Peres... We can’t lose!” Everyone agreed it was a good idea. The call was made and, of course, Jack was honored and agreed to play. The day after the match, Nicklaus re-ported to the Vatican to inform the Pope of his success in the match. “I came in second, your Holiness,” said Nicklaus. “Second?!!” exclaimed the surprised Pope. “You came in second to Shimon Peres?!!” “No,” said Nicklaus, “second to Rabbi Woods.”The General went out to find that noneofhisG.I.swerethere.Onefinallyranup,panting heavily. “Sorry, sir! Moments later, eight more G.I.s came up to the gen-eral panting, he asked them why they were late. “Sorry, sir! I had a date and it ran a little late, I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but it broke down, found a farm, bought a horse but it dropped dead, ran 10 miles, and now I’m here.” The General eyed them, feeling very skeptical but since he let the firstguygo,heletthemgo,too.AninthG.I.jogged up to the General, panting heavily. “Sorry, sir!
