What's all this fuss about EDID? Isn't it all automatic anyway?As long as you build HDMI product well, it has become a very reliable technology. One of the few complications is EDID.

The idea of EDID that your source (eg Bluray player) says, "Hey, I'd like to send you this signal." The display (eg projector) might say back to the source, "I have no issue with your picture, but could you send me stereo audio please?" Most of the time everything

works nicely, but not always! EDID control allows us to override the preferences to get the best result or to fix issues. So revisiting the example above, if we don't intend the projector to do audio, via configuring the EDID settings, we can say, "Forget about what the projector is telling you about audio, I want you to send digital audio." As the complexity increases, so does the requirement for EDID control.

In 2015, expect to see and hear a lot more about (and with) BluStream HDBaseT products We've seen a huge growth in HDBaseT products. HDBaseT has the ability to send HDMI over long distances, reliably and without compression or latency. It also supports control and data over CatX UTP cable, making it an ideal solution for connecting, say, smart

Projectors continue to sell like crazy, particularly in multipurpose commercial environments. One key challenge remains usability.

The first challenge is control, meaning stuff like turning the projector on/off and dropping the projector and screen out of the ceiling.

You have some great control systems like Creston, RTI and AMX that can do a lot. You have

more basic wall plates from JED, Extron and Pixie that will do most basic commands at the push

of a button, but I still don't think they are quite

the easiest.

A Danish company called Neets seems to be the simplest

solution. The setup involves

plugging in a USB into the Neets Quebec II and loading up the type of projector that your using. From there, you install a wall plate like the Pro3420 at the front of the room and one in the ceiling, near the projector. The Neets will probably best stay behind either one of these wall plates inside the wall.Signal presence triggers command sequence for projector and screen

When you plug in the HDMI or VGA into the computer, the Neets will take care of the rest. Projector turns on, screen drops down etc. When you unplug the laptop, the Neets will give you a predetermined moment (say 60 seconds). If it hasn't been plugged into another device in that time, it will do its thing. 4G LTE signals are go!.. And TV signals are not!Optus and Telstra have already started using the 700MHz band for our new 4G LTE mobile internet service. This has affected TV reception in many areas, having a much greater impact than expected.

Surely there is enough separation between Digital TV channel blocks and 4G/LTE? Besides, TV tuners are supposed to filter out the channel other than the one you're tuned to, right?!

It's not just the close proximity of the channel stacking, but the shear power of the 4G signals!

Prahran is Channel Block D, has good TV signal strength, yet the 4G transmissions are so powerful (~115dB) that even with a filtered masthead amp (25dB attenuation), the quality of the signal (called MER) was reduced

to a FAIL reading. Most TV receivers were designed for weaker TV broadcasts but the über powerful LTE simply saturates the tuner and all channels are lost in the din!

It appears that in this digital age, we need to start using 4G/LTE filters on every job!

From early testing, what are we recommending?For the job in Prahran, we found that the Antenna Industries filter worked exceptionally well. Due to the high 60dB attenuation, it completely fixed signal quality issues.

In the field, the Antenna Industries filter gave us around 70dB attenuation.

The Kingray filter turned a FAIL into a PASS, but was less suitable for this severe case. The Kingray has 25dB attenuation and a compact size, making it suitable to most domestic jobs.

First things first: switch on your masthead amplifier filter!

Kingray EDGE: Move these two jumpers to D position to enable 4G/LTE filtering

If you are in a lower signal area and use a masthead amplifier, it may already have an in-built filter.

The industry standard for masthead amplifiers would be the Aussie made Kingray Edge Series amplifiers. Radio Parts is one of the major wholesalers with us alone selling thousands into the market.

Edge series amps have in-built 4G filters that need to be switched on. This will fix most issues.

OK, but is there a more simple fix?For the Mum and Dad market, we introduced the DOSS 4G filter. This plugs between the TV and the cable going into the TV. This may fix the problem without having to climb on the roof, though you'll need one for every TV in the house.
