According to Chapline, a strong Indian brave name Chichi-Okobee offered himself to DeSoto’s guardsmen with the words, “Peace, I surrender to the warrior of the great white chief”. To secure their safe passage, DeSoto held Chichi- Okobee hostage, then soon realized his prisoner willingly endured the throngs of captivity in order to be near his daughter, Sara. Due to the unfamiliar living conditions Okobee fell gravely ill and the physicians of the Spanish camp were unable to cure him. In his dying hour, Sara begged to be permitted to minister Chichi. Love’s potion, more powerful than the medicament of medicine men, brought back the steady gaze to his eye, his health and strength. But when Sara fell ill, all the tender care given by the physicians were in vain. It was Chichi’s turn to beg DeSoto to allow him to return to his father’s camp and bring back the great medicine man, Ahti. Ahti kept long vigils by Sara’s side but was unable to revive her. Ahti’s powers had been matched with one greater than his; the Great Spirit had called her home. The distraught Chichi-Okobee requested that he might select the place of her burial and take part in the ceremony. One hundred Seminole braves led by Chichi-Okobee performed the burial of Sara. This humorous verse by Dixon L. Merritt contains one accurate statement “A wonderful bird is the Pelican”. Its bill will not hold more than its belly, and it cannot take enough food in its beak for a week. However, the beak or bill is remarkable. The Pelican uses this unusual physical feature together with his pouch as a hand to feed itself, as a tool to hammer, shear, and crack. And probably the most

to its home to eat. This is not true. The bill and pouch are

water is gulped in, when it surfaces, water is drained by

inside. The pouch is also used to feed its young, with the

pouch for the baby birds to reach in and feed themselves. The Pelican is among the most ancient of earth’s living creatures. Some scientists date the Pelican to the Paleocene and Eocene periods some 60 to 70 million years ago. Science disagrees about the number of Pelicans species in the world, some claiming 10, others 12. But they do agree there are two distinct types in America. Our local character here in Sarasota is Pelecanus Occidentalis, the Brown Pelican. To most of us he looks like a bird mother nature put together out of amusement. Especially when he is waddling across the beach or dock. A very graceful bird when airborne, you’ll see

your balcony almost close enough to touch. Pelicans have an intriguing relationship with man. They become very tame and will often develop friendships

out. Most area marinas have resident mascots that waddle up the docks and sit within a few feet with pleading eyes

waiting to be fed. Because our local Brown Pelican is not a migrating

bird, he lives here generation after generation. In the mangrove islands in our intracoastal

waterway are rookeries where the Pelican builds his nest and bear young each year.

population of Pelicans. They are truly a unique addition to our island nature. If you would like to learn more about the Pelican a number of our local Siesta Key shops carry an excellent booklet called “Pelican”, by Ray Ovington. There is much

to learn, for wonderful birds are the Pelicans of Siesta Key!

Siesta Beach is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, easy-going waves, and gorgeous crystal white sand. The sand is 99% pure quartz, soft and cool to the touch. Among the many awards it has earned are the “Whitest, Finest Beach Sand in the World” (The Great International White Sand challenge, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America” (The Travel Channel, 2004) and for 2011, it was rated #1 beach in the 21st annual Top 10 Beach List, produced by coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, Director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research. Walking along, or swimming and playing in th Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks, but others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and vollyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convienent concession stands. Shallow water near shorline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help special needs visitors cross the sand. There’s always something for everyone to do at Siesta Beach. It’s island location is within easy walking distance of the many

village shops and restaurants located in the Siesta Village.

Crescent Beach offers the same lush, white sands, azure waters and stunning sunsets, but it is relatively secluded and quiet, as it has only one public access road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern tip of this beach is Point of Rocks - a lovely snorkeling and diving area that is rich with coral rock formations as well ascolorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only to their closest friends) about Siesta Key’s best “non-private private” beach.

Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key, and affords a sportier, “family play” beach experience. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, a vollyball court and horseshoe pit. There’s also a boat launch,

Blind Pass Lagoon. There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local night spots just a short drive away. Turtle Beach is a narrow beach, with a somewhat steeper incline. The sand on the

beach tends to carry more shells, making it perfect for beach combers and shell

to take home and treasure, especially after a storm.

|Let’s Keep This Place A Secret Just Between Us...

|Siesta Key Area Farmers’ Markets...

When you by-pass Bentleys at over 50 miles per hour on the US41, you would never believe what secret it holds inside…! To say it’s a ‘hidden gem’ is a gross understatement; as one of Sarasota Counties premier quality, full service hotels, combined with one of Sarasota’s highest rated restaurants, Morgan’s, this is a place not to be missed. But the most amazing element of Bentleys is the Oasis that lies within! Centered in the complex, the outdoor ‘Osprey Beach’ pool area with its vast decks with man-made beaches, cabanas, gazebo’s, an awesome 80’ Tiki bar and casual dining Grille, this has got to be one of the most unbelievable discoveries you will make. You would think this would be enough, but not for the owners of this place; they also have a smart and trendy Seattle’s Best coffee shop with free WiFi access and a very classy nightclub called The Underground. It goes on… Bentleys has one of the biggest function rooms in the County being able to seat over 300 people for your dream wedding reception, party, corporate function, seminar or whatever you can come up with! They also have regular live bands inside and out. For Siesta Key residents and visitors, Bentleys has come up with a superb system of shuttling people to their location for us to enjoy their wonderful delights! They have teamed up with a local ‘Free Beaches Rides’ buggy company to transport guests from anywhere on the island to their shuttle bus pick up point at the South of the Key. This is a ‘priority’ service allowing people who want to go to Bentleys, to jump the ‘line’ for speedy transfer to their hotel.

From there it’s a quick and simple (about 15 minutes) free shuttle bus ride to Bentleys. This service runs from 10am until midnight allowing guests to enjoy a full day by the pool, and if they want, use the complementary showers and changing rooms to get dressed for a night in Morgan’s before moving on to the ‘Underground’ nightclub; then to be whisked back to Siesta Key without the worry of getting a ticket, genius! And

what about this… for VIP guests who decide to book a night in one of their stunning higher grade suites, they even offer to pick you up in the hotel car; a brand new $80,000 Jaguar XJL, now that’s worth staying over for! Let’s get down to the important stuff; Food - superb, Service - excellent, Prices - very reasonable and made even more pleasant during the many 2for1’s they run, and how about this… at the Tiki bar they have

a burger called the Bentleys ‘King Burger’ which has a single patty that weighs 2lb, and if you can eat the whole meal its free!!! We cannot state how highly we recommend a visit to Bentleys, especially now that they are offering our readers free access without having to buy the usual $25 ‘Resort Pass’ during season. But hey, let’s keep this place our little secret! To find out more, visit their website at www.BentleysResort.com or call them at 941-966-2121.

|It’s a Family Affair at SKOB... What could be better than having oysters at an authentic Florida Oyster Bar? How about oysters and live entertainment seven nights a week. The Siesta Key Oyster Bar is better known as SKOB (much as we refer to this publication as SKIV). Located in the heart of Siesta Key Village, it is a family owned and operated business. Jack, the father, retired from Chicago to Sarasota. His daughters Jill and Beth, along with their families, were soon to follow. Once Jill found out the Siesta Key Oyster Bar was for sale, it didn’t take much to convince her sister and brother-in-law to join her quest to possess the true family beach bar. The SKOB was purchased by “The Family” in November of 2003. The family has grown beyond Jill, Geno, Beth and Keith; they consider staff and regular customers as part of the family. Keeping true to their name, the SKOB’s specialty is oysters on the half shell. They even have a Crustacean Happy Hour that happens

every day from 3 – 6 daily featuring oysters

menu has a large assortment of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood entrees and a very neat kid’s menu. You can enjoy your meal on a large deck overlooking Ocean Blvd or inside with the air-conditioning. The SKOB offers full bar service and has a late night Happy Hour featuring 2 for 1 drink specials starting at 10pm Sunday through

Thursday and 11pm Friday and Saturday. SKOB features live music each and every day! The groups play island favorites like “Margaritaville,” but they also have wide repertoires of popular tunes from today and yesterday. Who knows, you may even catch some great Delta Blues.

The music starts 7pm Monday thru Thursday, 8pm Friday & 1pm Saturday & Sunday.5238 Ocean Blvd. On the Siesta Key Village Map location B #45.

|What’s In A Name? by Emy Stein... Ever wonder how some streets got named? Take “Midnight Pass Road” for instance. This road runs almost the entire length of Siesta Key and begs the question: What the heck happened at midnight on this sleepy little island back when it was named? Curious, I did a bit of research and came across an article informing me that a pass was created on the southern tip of Siesta Key back in 1921 by a hurricane. Digging a little further, I found that the pass was originally named Musketeer Pass and was renamed Midnight Pass in 1924. Interestingly, that was around the time of prohibition so I continued to read a few more articles until I came across one about Captain Louis Roberts. It detailed how he was a Key West native and traveled Florida’s west coast in

Siesta Key after falling in love and marrying

Little Sarasota Bay. They wasted no time in starting a family. And, as their family grew in size, so did the house. Roberts continued to add to the house and in the early 1900’s the Roberts

hospitality combined with his wife’s culinary

their home again to take on even more winter

It was later renamed Siesta Inn and has since been replaced with a private home. When prohibition hit with the enactment of the Volstead Act in 1919, rum-runners navigated throughout the area. Cargoes of illegal liquor would be run in from the Gulf.

boats and could maneuver up the shallow canals where the larger boats of the federal agents couldn’t pursue them. There were reports of a bootleggers’ shack springing up in the mangroves on Roberts Point and a speakeasy appearing on a cove at the north end of

Captain Roberts’ brother-in-

booze.” And interestingly, even more guests came to Roberts’ establishment during this time. So even though many will claim that the street is so named because the hurricane back in 1921 came through at midnight creating the original pass, in the back of my mind I will always wonder if bootlegging may have played a role in it? Whatever the reason, I’m sure Captain Roberts would be proud in knowing he was one of the many great pioneers that brought life, and perhaps a bit of mystery, to Siesta Key.

I Got The

Crabs At

Captain Curt’s

Captain Curt’s is a lot more than Clam Chowder. If you are looking for that “Old Florida” place to take the family, a place that will take you back in time to an era where good, fresh seafood was a standard, look no further... Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar is just that place.

It’s a place where reasonable prices, a casual family atmosphere and courteous service still exist, too.

Besides the great food and prices, Captain Curt’s serves up a slice of Old Florida character almost

room, you’ll get the feeling you have returned to a bygone era…a time when rustic, casual dining with a friendly staff, happy to serve you, still existed. The seating is casual and can accommodate large parties as well as small.

Captain Curt’s award winning New England Clam Chowder is just the beginning of the delicious items on our extensive menu. A large variety of crab plates are available, from Alaskan King, Snow Crab and

Dungeness to the local favorite, Florida Stone Crab.

But crab entrees are only part of the story. Our menu offers something for everyone. Seafood is the mainstay,

and you can choose from a wide variety. Shrimp, fish, scallops, clams, oysters, and even shark, can

b e prepared almost any way you desire. For the landlubber...The House

Specialty BBQ Baby Back Ribs have been called “The Best in Town,” and the Grilled Prime Rib is

the favorite of many. There is also a good variety of pork, chicken, burgers and hot dogs. And don’t forget the Gumbo; you won’t be disappointed.

If light fare is your choice, try one of Captain Curt’s delicious salads. They range from traditional favorites to a selection of seafood specialties like the Shrimp, Grouper or Shark Caesar. All are prepared with the freshest of ingredients.

For the children... Captain Curt’s is perfect. The Children’s Menu offers a number of tasty dishes -- with fries -- for just $5.99.Children’s dinners are served on our original “Crabby Frisbee,” which is theirs to keep and take home.

You just cannot beat Captain Curt’s menu for Florida favorites as well as delicious traditional entrees.

If more of a good thing is possible, visit Captain Curt’s Back Room Saloon. The full menu is available in the saloon with food and drink specials offered daily.

But the real secret to the Back Room’s popularity is entertainment! “Live at the Crab” presents live music by some of Sarasota’s best performers seven nights a week, from 8pm to midnight. (Check out our entertainment schedule on page 3. If you are a karaoke fan, try the Backroom’s karaoke, it’s been called “the best in town.”

Also, for sports fans, the Backroom’s satellite TVs make for a party during every event. Food and drink specials are always available.

So what are you waiting for? If you are looking for that perfect place to take the family, visit us on

Island Living Real Estate

I’ve always thought that there was something special about living on a tropical island. I imagined going to work in shorts and a casual shirt everyday and thought it would be like a nonstop vacation.

What we found was that the simplistic wonder of waking up to balmy breezes everyday and having the warmth of the sun kissing your back as you walk or bike to work is something that must be experienced. Coming from Wisconsin (I admit I’m a cheese-head) I don’t think we will ever take these near perfect conditions for granted. And yes, wearing

shorts and a casual shirt everyday really is just like a nonstop vacation for me. Are there any bad days in paradise? I’m sure there are, but for us we’ve stopped searching for that perfect place because we’ve found ours right here on Siesta Key. It’s so close to the

places to shop both on and around the island. The casual and friendly attitudes of the islanders make us feel like we’ve just come home.

If you’ve been thinking about buying a paradise getaway, now is the time for some great deals. Talk to any one of our many real estate agents and see for yourself. You, too,

|Buried Treasure on Siesta Key?

Continued on page 26

Colorful pirate stories and tales of buried treasure are plentiful throughout the Caribbean and along the Gulf coast. Siesta Key is no exception. Long ago when Spanish Galleons and British Frigates roamed our shores, pirates were plentiful. The many “blind passes” and shoal draft harbors of Florida’s coast were the ideal place to store the bounty. Surely this unsavory lot of pirates and criminals visited Siesta Key often.

Siesta Key has several tales of buried treasure being found. None of which have

must be some truth to the stories. One of my favorite stories is about

Point of Rocks, on the south end of Crescent Beach. The story goes: Long ago when pirates roamed our area in search of bounty the “pickings were

Since then the beach has receded and left the rocks under water. Over time the bags

Over the years, swimmers have reported

often after rough weather. Several modest
