Need a place for an event or party? The Odd Road Community Center is available for hourly rental for approved events or parties. This facility allows up to 60 people and is available for rental at a rate of $30 per hour. For information, dates of availability and securing a reservation you must contact Parks and Recreation at 868-3580. Payment is expected at the time of reser-vation. You must be a Poquoson resident to have rental privileges and no alcohol is allowed on City property. The facility has tables and chairs for use, as well as a small warming kitchen. The facility is located at 49 Odd Road.

Boys and Girls Ages 6-18 Deadline: NOVEMBER 16, 2012 Player registration is now open thru Friday, November 16, 2012. Players MUST REGISTER by the deadline.

Players who sign up late are not guaranteed placement & will be put on a waitlist until a spot is available. A late fee of $15.00 per child will be charged after November 16, 2012.

All players will be assigned teams through a placement and evaluation process. Attendance at this evaluation program is critical. Parents will be notified of the evaluation times following registration. Volunteer coaches are needed for the league in all age divisions. Coaches may only have 1 assistant per team. Players will be taken on a first come, first paid, as they register. Participation numbers are limited to the number of coaches available, and available gym space. Season runs from mid-December thru early March. Games begin in January. Coaches will set practice times. Request for specific practice times is not available. No special request for team placements are accepted- (carpools, friends, coaches, etc.) Age Divisions within the League: HOT SHOTS: Ages 6, 7 & 8 -co-ed not yet 9 as of March 1, 2013. This program is designed to be the start of a child’s hoops career. Together parent and child will work to learn pass-ing, dribbling, and shooting skills. Ages 5-7 Boys & Girls Begin your tennis game with this developmentally appropriate tennis program for children. Youngest players must at least be entering Kindergarten this fall to participate. Learn the fundamentals of the game of Volleyball, while enjoying basic game play experience. Games will partner with Fort Eustis teams. Games at Both Poquoson and Fort Eustis locations. Youth thru age 18 Boys & Girls Join the Winter Recreation Swim Team-The Riptides. Open to all youth who can easily swim 1 lap of 25 meters Riptides is a recreational swim experience designed to keep kids swimming year-round and give them increased knowledge and ability for competitive swimming as a sport. The season runs from early October through March. The Riptides swim as a member of the Virginia Community Swim League, meets are held in Hampton, Norfolk and Richmond, and meets are held typically one Saturday

per month from October through March. The team practices three times per week. Practice begins October 1 at the Hampton Aquatic Center 300 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. Practices are Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. Call 868-3580 for more information. Must have a minimum of 16 swimmers to run program. All swim-mers have a pre-requisite swimming ability requirement. Contact Poquoson Parks and Recreation for additional team details and full swimming requirements.

Ages 3 to Adult Classes typically run Tuesdays between 4:00pm and 7:00pm depending on age. Location: Poquoson Elementary Gym Classes are usually 1 hour in length. Twirlers have the option to participate in parades and perform in local events as an Islanderette. Classes begin on September 25 Returning Students: 4:30-6pm, & First Time Students: 5:00-6:00pm. As experience and skills develop, times may change slightly. All twirlers pay an initial yearly registration fee of $20.00 per child. Join the Island Girls as they play within the Newport News Indoor Field Hockey League. Players are grouped by ages. No special requests for team placement accepted. All games are played on Saturdays in Newport News. Volunteer coaches needed. Youngest players must be age 6 by November 1, 2012 in order to be eligible. All other ages are determined by age as of November 1, 2012. Registration is open for Residents Starting September 12. Non-residents registration open October 1 and only if space is available. This year’s season will run 8 Games from Mid November to Christmas break and then 8 more games from January to early March. Players registering will play and register for both game sessions. No new players will be accepted for the second set of games. Registrants will play both sessions. BULL ISLAND BOOT CAMP

COUCH TO 5K

Set your sights on the goal to run a 5K. Don’t wish for it, make it reality with this course that meets once a week. Join us on Monday nights, at different locations, as we train for a local 5K race. This beginner-friendly program will start slowly to allow runners to build endurance and technique, so don’t worry about not being able to keep up. We are in this together. Between meetings on Monday nights, each participant will be assigned two “homework” workouts to do on your own between the meetings. The race that everyone will run at the end of the session will be announced as it gets closer.– December 1, 2012. Fee for entry not in-cluded in the price of this class. Poquoson. This is designed to be an inten-sive hands on class to teach students the basic decorating skills needed to decorate cakes and pastries. Test your skills on cupcakes, brownies, cookies, and cakes. Learn to properly ice a cake, decorate using butter cream icing and other fun skills to cre-ate a one of a kind masterpiece using food. Beginners: Ages 10 thru Adult Learn the basics of fencing from proper stance to basic defensive and offensive moves, scoring points and proper protocols of the sport. FIRST STEPS PISTOL CERTIFICATION NRA FIRST Steps Pistol is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type for classes of four or fewer students. The course will meet the first night for classroom time and then include range time. Range time will be scheduled following classroom time with the instructor. Stu-dents will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun han-dling; the particular pistol model parts and opera-tion; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill de-velopment. Students will receive the Basics of Pis-tol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules bro-chure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualifica-tion booklet, FIRST Steps Course completion cer-tificate. Events in the Park & Shelter Use Municipal Park features a small shelter for events such as family reunions, team picnics or other activi-ties for individual use. Reservations are highly encouraged to arrange use of the shelter. All reserva-tions are free. Reservations are available to residents only on a first-come, first served basis at the Parks and Recreation Office. No electricity or water is provided at the shelter. Parks and Recreation can also help you with utilizing a City Park or facility for your next special event. All events on City property or in parks, are required to make an application through Parks & Recrea-tion. We want to help you make your event successful and safe. KIDS ISLAND No reservations are taken for picnic areas within the playground area. This playground is located in the front of Poquoson High School. Private reservations are not available at this facility.

Poquoson, an Algonquin Indian term for “great marsh”, is truly a paddlers paradise. Small hidden coves, untouched coastline and protected paddling gives visitors a different sight to see each time out. The area abounds with wildlife includ-ing bald eagles, heron, and other coastal birds. The Poquoson River and The Back River all connect around the city. Kayaking is an enjoyable and bountiful way to explore the Great Marsh. Places where the water mixes into the rivers to the bay can be deep and host an ever-changing tidal environment. A good scout report prior to your trip is always advised.

All programs listed within this publication are filled on a first-come, first serve basis, unless noted. Your receipt is your confirma-tion. Each program must draw a minimum number of participants or it will be cancelled. The City of Poquoson reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine programs, or change instructors to best provide the program for everyone.

If an activity is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be refunded your total program fees, less credit card transaction fees.

Please be sure to observe all registration closing dates for activities. Program fees must be paid at the time of registration. No registration is considered complete until payment is made and proper registration received. Call-in registration is NOT accepted. Registering after closing dates cannot guarantee your acceptance or space availability. In some cases, late registration will result in an additional fee if space is available. Be aware that supplies may not be available to you due to late registration.

If a program is cancelled by the Parks and Recreation Department, the registrant will receive a full return of monies paid less the 2.5% credit card fee or a credit voucher. This process may take up to 4 weeks for your to receive your funds.

Make an Emergency Supply Kit Recent derecho storms remind us we should be ready for emergencies Hurricane season is here. And nearly everyone in Virginia recently experi-

enced the historic derecho severe storms and extended power outages. Do

you have an emergency supply kit?

Every family needs supplies on hand for these situations. Start your emergency kit with these essential

items:

Three days of food that won’t spoil, such as canned goods and packaged foods.

Three days of water, one gallon per person per day.

A hand crank and/or battery-powered radio and extra batteries.

A written family emergency plan.

Once you gather these basics, put them in waterproof containers that you can carry or roll in case you need

to leave your home quickly. Old suitcases or backpacks also can hold supplies.

Other items that are useful in an emergency supply kit: flashlights with extra batteries (not candles), a first

aid kit, a list of prescriptions and doctors and a supply of medications, food and water for your pets, and spe-

cial items for babies, disabled or older family members.

Think that’s too much to do? At least get started with the essential items, and then add to your kit. For a

Emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone should be prepared to be self-sufficient for

at least the first 72 hours, and everyone should have a family emergency plan.

Now that fall is in full swing, please be mindful that ditches in our City are an essential component to a functioning drainage system.

The City maintains ditches that drain public streets.

Ditches that are on privately owned property and are designed to drain areas other than streets are the responsibility of the property owner.

To assist in improving drainage for everyone, here are some helpful hints: If you already have a backyard ditch or pipe that carries water from your neighbors’ property, it is illegal to block it. It is against City code to dump grass clippings, leaves, and anything else that is not rain water into a ditch or drainage pipe. To dispose of yard waste, please contact Public Works at 868-3590, as they can provide you with the proper procedures to do so. Taking the time to clear blocked ditches also relieves standing water, which in turn assists with lowering our mosquito population. For further assistance and information on maintaining and improving good water flow and drainage, the Engineering Department is here to assist you at 868-3025.

For the first time, Virginia will participate in the Great SouthEast ShakeOut, an earthquake drill set for Oct. 18, 2012, at 10:18 a.m. This is an opportunity for Virginia residents to learn more about what to do if there is an earthquake and then to practice these easy-to-remember steps:

CITY OF POQUOSON FIRE/RESCUE “HEADS UP” PROGRAM The City of Poquoson Fire/Rescue has a special program to provide emergency response personnel with the knowledge of pre-existing conditions or situations present at emergency scenes, i.e., individual con-fined to a wheelchair, etc., while in route to the scene. Providing them with this knowledge allows them to prepare for these conditions or situations and, if necessary, modify their plans to effect the most timely and positive outcome possible. The program is called “Heads Up” to symbolize the effect the program has on emergency responders, caus-ing them to be especially mindful of the special conditions or situations to which they have been alerted. The special conditions/situations are entered into the existing Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System via a special computer software program. The information is entered into the database according to the spe-cific address. When an emergency is called into the York /Poquoson/Williamsburg 9-1-1 Emergency Com-munications Center from/for that address, the C.A.D. program will alert telecommunicators that there is special information for that address. The telecommunicators will then advise the emergency responder of the “Heads Up” information over the two-way radio.

The “Heads Up” program targets certain individuals:

·Individuals who are non-ambulatory (paralyzed, confined to beds, wheelchairs, or unable to walk without

assistance).

·Individuals who are sensory impaired.

·Individuals who are reliant on critical medical equipment (monitors, home dialysis units, etc.).

·Individuals who are mentally impaired or easily confused and disoriented and who require supervision

and/or special assistance.

·Individuals with special physical needs.

The “Heads Up” program is available to all Poquoson citizens. Information can be placed in the “Heads Up” program completing a form available at the City of Poquoson Fire/Rescue, 830 Poquoson Avenue, Poquo-son, VA 23662. These new businesses are as varied as the Poquoson Consumer, from the Surfrider Restaurant to Bishop’s Outpost Bait & Tackle Shop, to new ser-vices for residents from personal health to spa treat-ments. This weekend long program, soon to be scheduled in the Spring of 2013, will help entrepreneurs receive men-toring and guidance from business leaders to guide their ideas to reality. WHERE: OLD MUNICIPAL BUILDING– 830 Poquoson Ave.

A Bag of TEFAP-USDA Commodity foods will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis to income eligible households. A short, com-pletely confidential form will be completed. Additionally, a small produce bag will be available for distribution.

A collaborative effort between the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank and our local community groups who graciously assist with distribution.

Festival sponsorship. It is already being used to better serve City special events and Parks & Recreation

Programs. The 4 x 4 represents the fifth vehicle provided by Cub Cadet Outlet of Yorktown to Poquoson as part

of Seafood Festival sponsorships. The City thanks Steve and Cub Cadet Outlet for their continuing support.
