Siesta Key BeachSiesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Public BeachLifeguards on duty

“The Best Sand Beach in America” Siesta Beach is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, easy-going waves, and gorgeous, crystal white sand. The sand is 99% pure quartz, soft and cool to the feet. Among the many awards it has earned are “The Whitest, Finest Beach Sand in the World” (The Great International White Sand Challange, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America” (The Travel Channel, 2004) and the best beach in contiguous 48 states (Dr. Beach, 2009). Walking along, or swimming and playing in th Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks, but others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and vollyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convienent concession stands. Shallow water near shorline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help special needs visitors cross the sand. There’s always something to do at Siesta Beach, and it’s within easy walking distance of the many shops and restaurants in Siesta Village.

Crescent Beach offers the same lush, white sands, azure waters and stunning sunsets, but it is relatively secluded and quiet, as it has only one public access

road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern tip of this beach is Point of Rocks - a lovely snorkeling and diving area that is rich with coral rock formations as well as colorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only to their closest friends) about Siesta Key’s best “non-private private” beach.

Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key, and affords a sportier, “family play” beach experience. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, a vollyball court and horseshoe

adjacent Blind Pass Lagoon. There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local night spots just a short drive away. Turtle Beach is a narrow beach, with a somewhat steeper incline. The sand on the beach tends to carry more shells, making it perfect for beach combers

home and treasure, especially after a storm.

|Great Egret The Great Egret is a large bird with all-white plumage that can reach 39 inches in height and a wingspan of 51 inches. It is thus only slightly smaller than the Great Blue or Grey Heron (A. cinerea). Apart from size, the Great Egret can be distinguished from other white egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet, though the bill may become darker and the lower legs lighter in the breeding season. In breeding plumage, delicate ornamental feathers are borne on the back. Males and females are identical in appearance; juveniles look like non-breeding adults. It is a

retracted. This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes, ibises, and spoonbills, which extend their

colonies, however, it often gives a loud croaking cuk cuk cuk. Information courtesy of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Egret

|Little Blue Heron The Little Blue Heron, Egretta caerulea, is a small heron. It breeds from the Gulf states of the USA through Central America and the Caribbean south to Peru and Uruguay. It is a resident breeder in most of its range,

but some northern breeders migrate to the southeastern USA or beyond in winter. There is post-breeding dispersal to well north of the nesting range, as far as the border between the US and Canada. The Little Blue Heron’s breeding habitat is sub-tropical swamps. It nests in colonies, often with other herons, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs. 3-7 light blue eggs are laid. This species is about 60 cm (24 in.) long, with a 102 cm (40 in.) wingspan, and weighs 325 g

(11.5 oz/0.72 lbs). It is a medium-large, long-legged, heron with a long pointed blue or greyish bill with a black tip. Breeding adult birds have blue-grey plumage except for the head and neck, which are purplish

|Ibis American White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) is a species of wading bird of the ibis family Threskiornithidae which occurs from the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States south through most of the New World tropics. It occurs in marshy wetlands and pools near the coast. It also occurs on mowed grass, lawns, and has become common and nearly fearless in some city parks, where it can be found feeding alone or with other Ibis. It builds a stick nest in trees, bushes, or over water, and 2 to 5 eggs are typically laid. White ibises are monogamous and colonial, usually nesting in mixed colonies with other wading species. Adults are 65 cm long with a 95 cm wingspan. They have all-white plumage except for

blends into the face of breeding birds; non-breeding birds show a pink to red face. The American White Ibis is the mascot of The University of Miami, located in Coral Gables, Florida. Information courtesy of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_White_Ibis

The Crescent Beach Grocery is Siesta Key’s premier full-service grocery store. Carrying an extremely wide range of groceries, sundries, beer, wine, delicatessen items and fresh-cut meat – as well as practically anything else you can think of – the grocery caters to the needs of both residents and visitors on Siesta Key. The store is particularly well-known for providing good value, personal service and a warm, friendly environment.

“We really want to provide for the very diverse needs and wants of our customer base,” explains Nancy. “If someone asks us for a product we don’t carry, we try very hard to get it for them, and we are almost always successful. We also carry a large number of specialty items that you

we are always looking for new, interesting products our customers will enjoy.”

“One of our goals is to make sure that grocery shopping never becomes a reason for anyone to cross back over to the mainland,” says Nancy. “Once you are on the island, you should be able to stay in that island frame of mind, even when you need a nice cabernet, a great steak to grill or food for your pet. We are on Siesta Key and our store maintains the ambiance of the Key, but we have just about any grocery item that our customers need.”

Crescent Beach Grocery is a service-driven business say its owners. “We want to be the best small grocery in Sarasota in terms of the range and quality of the products we offer our customers and the clean, friendly environment we provide. We are convenient, but we don’t charge convenience store prices; we are comprehensive without being impersonal and we carry quality products that take a backseat to none. We also offer a shopping service and delivery for a nominal fee. No other grocery around here does that.” In addition to the complete line of groceries and extensive list of exotic and gourmet items, the market carries a full range of deli items; signature salads, deli meats and cheeses, fresh-made sandwiches and heat-and-eat take-out meals. The meat counter carries selected cuts of the

chicken cuts and a hand-chosen selection of seafood. The grocery is especially proud of its large wine selection, which has been called the most extensive and comprehensive on the island. “We both like wine and enjoy tasting new wines,” Bill says. “We try to have about ten wine tastings per year for our customers so that they can experience

suit their palates. For our customers who prefer premium beers, we also have a varied assortment of microbeers available individually or in mix-and-match six packs.”

FIRST PLACE WINNER: BEST New England Clam Chowder

To say we’re proud is an understatement. Going to Newport, RI to compete for the title of Best New England Clam Chowder was a long shot at best. Many thought we were “Nuts!” We constantly heard: “No matter how good the chowder is, the people of New England are not going to allow the title of “Best Chowder” to go to Florida!” They had history on their side, too. After 26 years of competition, only one other restaurant outside of New England had taken home the title. It’s kind of like a New York restaurant winning the “Best Grouper Sandwich” award at a Florida Seafood Festival. We had faith though. We knew our chowder was the best, and we proved it to them. After two days and serving up over 120 gallons of our chowder to some 15,000 “chowder heads,” the people voted. Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar took First Place! We believe winning is a testament to just how good our food is here at Captain Curt’s and to the dedica-tion of our staff in preparing and serving it. During the festival, the staff truly “went the extra mile!” They worked hard to bring home the title. We are so proud and happy to have them. We couldn’t have won without their dedication and hard work! Stop by Captain Curt’s today and enjoy the best New England Clam Chowder in the World! And meet the great people that brought the title home to Siesta Key!

Having lived in Siesta for some time, I was aware of how many dog owners there were on the island and how little there was to offer them. Fairy Tails offers a unique and eclectic mix of both dog and human merchandise consisting of both necessities and luxuries with imports from around the world.

Island Living Real Estatewww.siestakeyislander.com 941.539.0205 December 2010 Island Visitor 11

I’ve always thought that there was something special about living on a tropical island. I imagined going to work in shorts and a casual shirt everyday and thought it would be like a nonstop vacation.

What we found was that the simplistic wonder of waking up to balmy breezes everyday and having the warmth of the sun kissing your back as you walk or bike to work is something that must be experienced. Coming from Wisconsin (I admit I’m a cheese-head) I don’t think we will ever take these near perfect conditions for granted. And yes, wearing

shorts and a casual shirt everyday really is just like a nonstop vacation for me. Are there any bad days in paradise? I’m sure there are, but for us we’ve stopped searching for that perfect place because we’ve found ours right here on Siesta Key. It’s so close to the

places to shop both on and around the island. The casual and friendly attitudes of the islanders make us feel like we’ve just come home.

If you’ve been thinking about buying a paradise getaway, now is the time for some great deals. Talk to any one of our many real estate agents and see for yourself. You, too,

Or, better yet, combine both of them. About 15 minutes south of Siesta Key is a unique tour called “Just Ducky”. It’s a trip on the JD Dolphin LARC V((Light Amphibious Resupply Craft), an ex military vehicle commonly known as a duck. The comfortable, open air boat is U.S.

passengers. One climbs a ladder to board because the trip starts in a parking lot beside US 41 (the Tamiami Trail) in Nokomis located between Sarasota and Venice. Once aboard, Captain Stewart and son Shane give you the history of “Ducky” and its capabilities. Then you are off down the three lanes of US 41

to the amazement of passing motorists. Shane hoots his ancient horn at people and there is much waving by everyone on board. Ducky enters the water at the

old railroad station park in Venice. The captain points out nature habitats and other highlights of land and sea as you travel the picturesque inland waterways of Venice and Casey Key down to the Gulf of Mexico. Often dolphins swim alongside and an occasional manatee is sighted. You’ll see ospreys, other wildlife, and beautiful waterfront sights. The Duck returns to shore at Higel Park boat launch on Venice Island. You’ll then travel by land down scenic Venice Avenue with much more hooting at the pedestrians and storekeepers. Then you’re back over the bridge that you had earlier gone under by water. Back to the lot and you’ll be talking about this cruise for a long time! Small coolers, binoculars and

cameras are welcome. Daily Trips Depart from Nokomis at

Venice has enchanted visitors for over a hundred years. Just a short drive from Siesta Key, Venice showcases the small town ambiance of Old Florida where shop owners know you by name and Friday nights mean hometown football games. There are a number of special surprises that await you in the Venice area. The vibrant downtown area, located on Venice Island, as well as service area, encompass many varieties of stores and dining establishments. Japanese, Thai, Polish, English, Italian, and good old American barbeque are represented by the local restaurants. From designer clothing and accessories to specialty stores featuring funky, retro items, Venice Avenue has it all. Nearby Miami Avenue is chock full of

antique stores that will keep you occupied for hours. And don’t forget to visit the historic KMI building on Tampa Avenue that now serves as an indoor mall with clothing shoppes, an art gallery, and a French restaurant. In addition to the beauty of the gulf beaches, Venice also has a fresh water river full of wild life and adventure within its

you have the best of both worlds here; saltwater and freshwater

are available directly on the pier.Another Florida “best kept secret” is the Venice Area Audubon Society Rookery located on a small island in a small lake in South Venice. Photographers and birders from near and far come to the rookery to enjoy and photograph nesting birds in January, February and March. During the nesting season, the rookery is crowded with Great Blue Heron and Great Egrets and

some Anhingas and Night Herons. Venice is fortunate to have two

incredible paved walkways for walkers, bicyclists, rollerbladers, and all other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy. The Legacy Trail is a rail-to-trails project that links Venice directly to Sarasota via a paved lane through several different ecological habitats. The Venetian Waterway Park, a linear park that

use. It provides a calming view of boats and dolphins making their way through the channel. Along the park, you can also visit the recently restored Venice Train

Depot at the northeast end. In its day, the depot greeted those who had the greatest impact on creating the Venice we know today. Like the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the U.S. Army Air Corp., the Kentucky Military Institute (KMI) and Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus, all of whom left their mark on this area.
