The name of the business may be A Taste of Germany, but walking in the door brings all the senses into play. There is the tantalizing aroma of the baked goods, followed by the sight of the beautifully decorated cakes and tarts that Tanja Hofmann baked the night before. We’ll leave the tasting to you. Tanja and her husband Manuel moved here from Germany with their 17-year-old son after visiting family in the area. Tanja had spent over 10 years working in hotels and restaurants to perfect her talents in the kitchen. A few of the cakes in the store are imported from Germany but the rest are made by Tanja, often using ingredients imported from Germany. She makes the daily soup selections as well – German-style, she says. A Taste of Germany offers a wide selection of baked confections, but is also a German deli offering fresh soups and sandwiches on German breads. There is also a full menu of special coffees to go with by-the-slice cake, many made with quark which is similar to Greek yogurt and creates cakes that are lighter with less fat. Siesta Key Beacheswww.siestakeyislander.com 941.539.0205 Season 2012 Island Visitor 3

Siesta Beach is renowned for its truly breathtaking sunsets, easy-going waves, and gorgeous crystal white sand. The sand is 99% pure quartz, soft and cool to the touch. Among the many awards it has earned are the “Whitest, Finest Beach Sand in the World” (The Great International White Sand challenge, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America” (The Travel Channel, 2004) and for 2011, it was rated #1 beach in the 21st annual Top 10 Beach List, produced by coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, Director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research.

Walking along, or swimming and playing in th Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks, but others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and vollyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convienent concession stands. Shallow water near shorline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help special needs visitors cross the sand. There’s always something for everyone to do at Siesta Beach. It’s island location is within easy walking distance of the many

village shops and restaurants located in the Siesta

Village.

Crescent Beach offers the same lush, white sands, azure waters and stunning sunsets, but it is relatively secluded and quiet, as it has only one public access road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern tip of this beach is Point of Rocks - a lovely snorkeling and diving area that is rich with coral rock formations as well ascolorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only to their closest friends) about Siesta Key’s best “non-private private” beach.

Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key, and affords a sportier, “family play” beach experience. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, a vollyball court and horseshoe pit. There’s also a boat launch,

Blind Pass Lagoon. There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local night spots just a short drive away. Turtle Beach is a narrow beach, with a somewhat steeper incline. The sand on the beach tends to carry more shells, making it perfect for beach combers and shell

to take home and treasure, especially after a storm.

Bring yourself a blanket or chair, most everyone does. It’s happening every Sunday starting a couple of hours before sunset, and ends around 10 PM. It’s an open free form community drum circle at the Siesta Key public beach. It meets up just south of the main pavilion b e t w e e n l i f e g u a r d stands 3 and 4 on Siesta Public Beach. Just follow your ears. This one is always a good time with solid musicality, dancing, and a great vibe. Some of these cats even keep on playing if it rains! Admission is free.

Best Kept Secrets4 Island Visitor Season 2012 941.539.0205 www.siestakeyislander.com

|Let’s Keep This Place A Secret Just Between Us... When you by-pass Bentleys at over 50 miles per hour on the US41, you would never believe what secret it holds inside…! To say it’s a ‘hidden gem’ is a gross understatement; as one of Sarasota Counties premier quality, full service hotels, combined with one of Sarasota’s highest rated restaurants, Morgan’s, this is a place not to be missed. But the most amazing element of Bentleys is the Oasis that lies within! Centered in the complex, the outdoor ‘Osprey Beach’ pool area with its vast decks with man-made beaches, cabanas, gazebo’s, an

awesome 80’ Tiki bar and casual dining Grille, this has got to be one of the most unbelievable discoveries you will make. You would think this would be enough, but not for the owners of this place; they also have a smart and trendy Seattle’s Best coffee shop with free WiFi access and a very classy nightclub called The Underground. It goes on… Bentleys has one of the biggest function rooms in the County being able to seat over 300 people for your dream wedding reception, party, corporate function, seminar or whatever you can come up with! They also have regular live bands inside and out. For Siesta Key residents and visitors, Bentleys has come up with a superb system of shuttling people to their location for us to enjoy their wonderful delights! They have teamed

up with a local ‘Free Beaches Rides’ buggy company to transport guests from anywhere on the island to their shuttle bus pick up point at the South of the Key. This is a ‘priority’ service allowing people who want to go to Bentleys, to jump the ‘line’ for speedy transfer to their hotel. From there it’s a quick and simple (about 15 minutes) free shuttle bus ride to Bentleys. This service runs from 10am until midnight allowing guests to enjoy a full day by the pool, and if they want, use the complementary showers

and changing rooms to get dressed for a night in Morgan’s before moving on to the ‘Underground’ nightclub; then to be whisked back to Siesta Key without the worry of gett ing a t icket , genius! And what about this… for VIP guests who decide to book a night in one of their stunning higher grade suites, they even offer to pick you up in the hotel car; a brand new $80,000 Jaguar XJL, now that’s worth staying over for! Let’s get down to the important stuff; Food

- superb, Service - excellent, Prices - very reasonable and made even more pleasant during the many 2for1’s they run, and how about this… at the Tiki bar they have a burger called the Bentleys ‘King Burger’ which has a single patty that weighs 2lb, and if you can eat the whole meal its free!!! We cannot state how highly we recommend a visit to Bentleys, especially now that they are offering our readers free access without having to buy the usual $25 ‘Resort Pass’ during season. But hey, let’s keep this place our little secret!

|It’s a Family Affair at SKOB... What could be better than having oysters at an authentic Florida Oyster Bar? How about oysters and live entertainment seven nights a week. The Siesta Key Oyster Bar is better known as SKOB (much as we refer to this publication as SKIV). Located in the heart of Siesta Key Village, it is a family owned and operated business. Jack, the father, retired from Chicago to Sarasota. His daughters Jill and Beth, along with their families, were soon to follow. Once Jill found out the Siesta Key Oyster Bar was for sale, it didn’t take much to convince her sister and brother-in-law to join her quest to possess the true family beach bar. The SKOB was purchased by “The Family” in November of 2003. The family has grown beyond Jill, Geno, Beth and Keith; they consider staff and regular customers as part of the family. Keeping true to their name, the SKOB’s specialty is oysters on the half shell. They even have a Crustacean Happy Hour that happens

every day from 3 – 6 daily featuring oysters

menu has a large assortment of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood entrees and a very neat kid’s menu. You can enjoy your meal on a large deck overlooking Ocean Blvd or inside with the air-conditioning. The SKOB offers full bar service and has a late night Happy Hour featuring 2 for 1 drink specials starting at 10pm Sunday through

Thursday and 11pm Friday and Saturday. SKOB features live music each and every day! The groups play island favorites like “Margaritaville,” but they also have wide repertoires of popular tunes from today and yesterday. Who knows, you may even catch some great Delta Blues.

The music starts 7pm Monday thru Thursday, 8pm Friday & 1pm Saturday & Sunday.5238 Ocean Blvd. On the Siesta Key Village Map location B #45.

I Got The

Crabs At

Captain Curt’s

Captain Curt’s is a lot more than Clam Chowder. If you are looking for that “Old Florida” place to take the family, a place that will take you back in time to an era where good, fresh seafood was a standard, look no further... Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar is just that place.

It’s a place where reasonable prices, a casual family atmosphere and courteous service still exist, too.

Besides the great food and prices, Captain Curt’s serves up a slice of Old Florida character almost

room, you’ll get the feeling you have returned to a bygone era…a time when rustic, casual dining with a friendly staff, happy to serve you, still existed. The seating is casual and can accommodate large parties as well as small.

Captain Curt’s award winning New England Clam Chowder is just the beginning of the delicious items on our extensive menu. A large variety of crab plates are available, from Alaskan King, Snow Crab and

Dungeness to the local favorite, Florida Stone Crab.

But crab entrees are only part of the story. Our menu offers something for everyone. Seafood is the mainstay,

and you can choose from a wide variety. Shrimp, fish, scallops, clams, oysters, and even shark, can

b e prepared almost any way you desire. For the landlubber...The House

Specialty BBQ Baby Back Ribs have been called “The Best in Town,” and the Grilled Prime Rib is

the favorite of many. There is also a good variety of pork, chicken, burgers and hot dogs. And don’t forget the Gumbo; you won’t be disappointed.

If light fare is your choice, try one of Captain Curt’s delicious salads. They range from traditional favorites to a selection of seafood specialties like the Shrimp, Grouper or Shark Caesar. All are prepared with the freshest of ingredients.

For the children... Captain Curt’s is perfect. The Children’s Menu offers a number of tasty dishes -- with fries -- for just $5.99.Children’s dinners are served on our original “Crabby Frisbee,” which is theirs to keep and take home.

You just cannot beat Captain Curt’s menu for Florida favorites as well as delicious traditional entrees.

If more of a good thing is possible, visit Captain Curt’s Back Room Saloon. The full menu is available in the saloon with food and drink specials offered daily.

But the real secret to the Back Room’s popularity is entertainment! “Live at the Crab” presents live music by some of Sarasota’s best performers seven nights a week, from 8pm to midnight. (Check out our entertainment schedule on page 3. If you are a karaoke fan, try the Backroom’s karaoke, it’s been called “the best in town.”

Also, for sports fans, the Backroom’s satellite TVs make for a party during every event. Food and drink specials are always available.

So what are you waiting for? If you are looking for that perfect place to take the family, visit us on

await the opportunity to serve you. We hope to see you soon!
