ICSE When: 11 February, 4.00 p.m.Where: HexagonAfter the pupils of the outgoing Class 10 had assembled, all their teachers wished them luck for the coming examination, Sharmistha Ma’am reminding them ‘not to forget their prepositions during their English exam’!The pupils enjoyed themselves, interacting freely with their teachers and among themselves. Tea and delicious snacks were served. The pupils sang in groups, and the teachers joined in the chorus. Taking photographs and filling slam books was the next activity. Quite a few pupils collected messages and autographs from their teachers and friends. Group photographs were taken before the pupils dispersed.

ISCWhen: 28 January, 2.30 p.m.Where: HexagonThe teachers wished the pupils of the outgoing Class 12 the very best for the coming examination and also in whatever they chose to do in the future. The mood was a mixture of excitement and sadness at the end of an important chapter in the lives of the pupils — school life. Several pupils got up to speak, reminiscing about their years in school and talking about their hopes for the future. Then came a round of singing, and some of the pupils and staff were quite misty-eyed at the choice of songs.A sumptuous tea was served and this was followed by a session of photography. Cameras flashed as pupils scrambled to take photographs or get photographed with their friends and

teachers. More songs followed and at last it was time for the festivities to end. The pupils got into line for the last time on the fifth floor, ready to be dispersed by their teachers.

The next item was an English one-act play that has never failed to delight audiences: The Dear Departed by S. Houghton. It portrays human greed – two daughters squabbling over the possessions of their supposedly dead father. The father rises, learns of the designs of his daughters, and shocks everyone except the granddaughter by announcing his decision to get married again. Among the actors, Shinjan as the Grandfather deserves special mention.Cast: Roshni Srimany 7B, Maninee Maity 8D, Dorothy Deb 10A, Rohit Chakraborty 10A, Sagnik Sarkar 10A, and Shinjan Mitra 12ADirector: Mrs K. The Prize Distribution Ceremony followed. The Founder-Rector gave away the prizes on both days. On 2 May, Classes 3–5 received their

The same programme was presented on both evenings. It began with a musical piece – The Journey Begins – composed and dedicated to the Pro-Rector, Mrs K. Guha, by Mr A. Haldar. Accompanied by Mr V. M. Redden (guitar), and three pupils, Shinjan Mitra 12A, Bhaswar Faisal Khan 12A (outgoing), and Kausheyo Roy 10B, the composer played it himself on the synthesizer. With the strains of this music providing a background, the ceremonial lamp was lighted by the Founder-Rector, Mr I. Guha. The inaugural dance was appropriately Ganesh Vandana. This brief Odissi piece, graceful and solemn, was an invocation of and homage to the divine power that blesses and oversees all human endeavour. The young dancers did justice to the theme. After the songs, there was a special announcement. The audience was reminded that the late Satikanta Guha had always been very particular about observing Rabindra Jayanti, and so far GHS had never failed to observe the Poet’s birthday. But this year compelling circumstances had forced the School to close for the summer vacation before 9 May, and so the programme that was to follow was intended to be an early but special homage to Rabindranath on his 150th birth anniversary. Entitled Phollo Sadhan Holo Badhan Kshoy, it was a miscellany of scenes from the play Acholayatan, and various skits, rhymes, and songs. Combining elements of satire, farce, and humour, they represent the Poet’s opinion of the conventional systems of education.Cast: Atreyo Palit 7D, Kritartho Biswas 7E, Lagnajit Pradhan 7E, Rohitashya Mitra 7E, Abhinandan Mondal 7F, Dharitri Chaudhuri 7F, Kopai Chakra-borty 8D, Sneha Chatterjee 8E, Sagnik Dutta 9C, Siddhartha Haldar 9C, Chandramantha Sen 9D, Dhee Majumdar 10A, Shaurja Bhattacharyaa 10A, Sukanya Bhattacharya 10A, Soumyadeep Das 10B, Aniket Banerjee
