London Culture/ Volunteering Day 2015

London Culture What do you get if you give 95 Year 12 students a travel card, a tube map, some road maps and a sheet of iconic London Sights? The Year 12 ACHIEVE London Culture Day!!

Setting off from Becontree on the Wednesday morning, most found it a little unusual not to be in a family group with a member of staff. However, this sense of trust and “freedom” proved to be the start of a great day of adventure and fun. Unfortunately, the weather was determined to put a dampener on the day, but the students did a great job!

Students were given the task of navigating the group to a set of iconic London venues/ sights including London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Golden Hind, Black Taxi Cab, Red Telephone Box and Big Ben.

Groups had to make sure they got pictorial evidence of having been to the various places.

The whole venture is designed to show our students just how close they are to London for trips of fun and looking to the future as a place of employment.

A few of the photos they collected are shared in the newsletter.

Volunteering Next Tuesday sees the second ACHIEVE day for the Sixth Form. It sees a change of focus as four outside charities are coming in to discuss the importance of volunteering and the effect it has on the volunteer and also those volunteered for.

Free The Children will kick off the day with an introduction and also a separate presentation talking about WE Day and an amazing travel opportunity for those who are volunteering.

Little Havens Children Hospice will once again be there and bring home to our students the effect that their time can have on others. Being based in Essex, it brought home how volunteering in the community is so important and enables so many. We are due to follow this up with a visit to their Open Day later in November with the Year 12 Health & Social Care BTEC group.

Daneford Trust offer the chance of volunteering in a gap year type opportunity. This does not need to be a full year it could be a few weeks. The students would get the chance to work in a community in another country and see amazing effects on themselves as well as others.

New Speakers this year will be from the Mark Evison Foundation, offering real funding to our students who wish to design and carry out a project. This will be an interesting story to follow as the projects develop over the year.

Our current Year 12 have an amazing number of students who already do a lot of volunteering both in and out of school. Hopefully this will highlight to them that their time is so well spent and to those who are thinking about volunteering, it will give them a thousand reasons why they should.

GCSEs achieved in 2015

From the GCSE grades shown above, Jack was a very academically talented JRCS Year 11 student. In September he decided to continue his studies here at JRCS and the Southern Consortium. It was tough for Jack to choose exactly what he wanted to study at first, as “the consortium offered so much variety” but with the advice of teachers and subject tasters experienced in Year 11, he made his final choices. Initially unsure about travelling to a different school, Jack soon settled in and become familiar with his surroundings and new teachers. He believed “if you are really passionate about your subject and it is offered in the consortium, then it is worth travelling for.” Jack’s toptip to all aspiring Year 11 and current Sixth Form students is to ensure you manage your workload and time effectively, to prevent deadlines from being missed and for work to be of the highest quality. This proved to work for Jack during the first VIMA (assessment) week, where the results he achieved were above what he expected.

Jack believes “if you are really passionate about your subject and it is offered in the consortium, then it is worth travelling for.”
