Presentation 1Jason CunninghamJason Cunningham is an expert financial commentator, successful business owner,

author, and regular contributor and commentator on radio and Channel10’s The Living Room.

Jason loves nothing more than sharing his business success tips with fellow business owners or executives looking to build and grow their business. He has been doing this since 1997 when at a tender age he co-founded the business and personal wealth advisory firm The Practice.

He is the author of the financial self-help book Where’s My Money? A soon to be released second book Have Your Cake (and Sell it Too) is the subject of his keynote address.

Jason’s presentation draws on his 18+ years’ experience growing his own business, and helping others to build a better business they can sell off at a handsome profit.

Presentation 2Jamie Johns FIPA, Amanda Newton MIPA and Nick Pateras MIPAJamie Johns is the CEO of Sky Accountants, a boutique firm with 14 staff, 12 based in Ballarat and 2 full time Accountants in the Philippines.

Sky Accountants have recently been recognised as one of the top 60 firms world-wide in the book “The World’s Most Inspiring Accountants”, by UK journalist Steve Pipe. The practice’s speciality is working with clients in the hospitality & tourism industries which includes providing Virtual CFO services to gaming venues, clubs, pubs, bars, cafes, lounges, resorts, motels, restaurants, hospitality franchisees and all types of tourism operators. Sky Accountants won the 2015 award for the most innovative accounting firm from Panalitix and were a finalist for the accountantsdaily award for the most innovative accounting practice in Australia.

Amanda Newton is a director of Negotiis Advisors and is Head of Client Experience. Negotiis is focused on their clients’ needs and remains relevant in an evolving marketplace increasingly reliant on diversification and differentiation. Amanda uses her accounting expertise, communication skills, practical advice and inspiration to help small business owners and managers reach their full potential. Negotiis have won awards for their practice and Amanda offers a fresh perspective in the traditional accounting space.

Nick Pateras’ accounting journey commenced in 2000 at KPMG, then WHK, where he established the foundations of his business career. Joining Chris Wilson they together built a business on the foundations of a passion for delivering proactive advisory services to clients. This has led them to provide diverse service offerings, employing another 9 principals and progressing from 3 to 55 staff in just 6 years.

Each of this trio has a success story to tell which is symptomatic of the changing financial landscape for which Jason Cunningham’s Keynote presentation will be an apt segue They are typical of the new generation IPA Member…. and may there be many more!

Presentation 3Professor Christine BrownChristine is Professor of Finance and Head of the Department of Banking and Finance

at Monash University. She completed a PhD at the University of Melbourne, and prior to joining Monash University in 2010, held several positions at the University of Melbourne. Christine has served on the editorial board of three international journals, including the Global Finance Journal and has consulted to the Australian Treasury and the Board of Taxation on security design and taxation issues. Christine’s major research projects and extensive publications have been in the areas of corporate finance, derivative pricing, infrastructure financing and financial institutions management.

Recent developments in behavioural finance, building on psychology, help us understand factors which influence people’s financial decisions. Using a number of examples (involving audience participation) the session will help participants understand the key factors in financial decision making, and their relevance for product and service design and delivery.

Presentation 4Bob NeillPrior to becoming a Director of Seaview Consulting, Bob was a partner in a mid-

tier Melbourne accounting practice for almost 20 years and oversaw the growth of the firm from 5 – 180 employees. He then became a specialist consultant at MLC, managing a team providing advice on issues such as strategic planning, succession planning transaction management and financial management.

Bob was the pioneer of the move by financial planning principals to see their role as business managers and investors as well as advisers.

This session will explore the succession planning options available to principals and what they need to do to ensure that all of their key objectives can be met. It will examine the options of selling to an external party, selling to internal staff of partners and merger opportunities. Tips on how to best prepare for each alternative and how to maximise the value that can be achieved for practices whichever strategy is adopted.

Presentation 5

Radhika Kanhai and Andrea MappRadhika is a Partner in Insolvency and Commercial Litigation at a CBD Commercial firm, Cornwall Stodart. She has over 15 years’ experience in complex court litigation and dispute resolution. Her areas of significant expertise include corporate reconstruction and insolvencies, personal insolvencies, leasing disputes, contractual breaches, franchising and Corporations Act matters. Radhika is currently Vice President of the International Women in Insolvency Association and a full member of the Australian Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association.

Andrea is a Barrister at the Victorian Bar and a member of Lonsdale Chambers, one of the first private barristers’ chambers in Melbourne. With over fifteen years’ legal experience, both in private practice and as in house counsel She has worked on a broad range of commercial matters for a wide-range of clients. Andrea has extensive experience in a varied range of commercial fields, with a particular focus on administrative law, building and construction, property (including PPSA) and insolvency.

In this presentation, Radhika and Andrea will deal with the aspects of legal process accountants should be wary of in terms of practice management, how in turn to advise your clients, your role and responsibilities in dealing with legal issues, how to deal with requests for documents and finally how to avoid getting caught in messy legal situations.

Presentation 6David Sauer FIPADavid is a highly respected public practitioner specialising in education, training and

practical implementation of accounting, auditing and professional standards. He has observed the good and not so good through 30 years of working with public practitioners and helping them address the myriad issues they face. David has been delivering the MPA Program and CPE sessions to IPA members throughout Australia on a wide variety of topics for over 15 years.

David will identify concerns about using ‘the cloud’, tell you what the law says today, and suggest where accountants should fly ahead and where they should be cautious. Topics include storage, communications and dealing with third parties like regulators, and range across security and privacy, location, retrieval, ownership and disclosure.

Presentation 7Professor Kevin DavisKevin is a Professor of Finance at the University of Melbourne and Research

Director of the Australian Centre for Finance Studies. His primary research interests are financial regulation, innovation, institutions and markets, and corporate finance. He is widely published in the areas of finance, banking, monetary economics and macroeconomics.

In December 2013, he was appointed by the Federal Treasurer as one of the 5 panel members of the Inquiry into Australian Financial Systems being chaired by David Murray, which delivered its Report to Government in 2015.

The Murray Financial System Inquiry has made a number of recommendations which will shape, in conjunction with ongoing technological change and international developments, the future evolution of the financial sector. Kevin’s presentation will analyse and review these developments with an emphasis on implications for financial consumer outcomes and providers of services and products to that sector.

Presentation 8Dr Craig Latham and Geoff BrowneCraig’s role as Deputy Australian Small Business Commissioner provides information and assistance to small businesses, represents their interests and concerns to the Australian Government and works with business and government to promote a consistent and coordinated approach to small business matters. Before joining the ASBC in mid-2013, Craig was previously a Group Manager in New Zealand’s Inland Revenue Department negotiating, managing the delivery of a number of innovative tax and social policy programs He helped improve policy effectiveness across the NZ public service and worked as part of the initiative to cut red tape to create a better, smarter economy.

Geoff Browne was appointed as Victorian Small Business Commissioner in October 2011. Prior to the appointment, Geoff was Deputy Director at Consumer Affairs Victoria for six years. He has had senior management experience in both the public and private sectors, working in telecommunications, finance, and e-commerce. He has also run his own small business.

Craig and Geoff will set the scene with what the small business and family enterprise environment looks like, focusing on the key challenges for business. They will then work through various ways that you can influence the environment for your client.

Presentation 9Ivor WorrellIvor opened Worrells, a firm dedicated to solvency management, insolvency

administration and forensic investigation, in 1973 and worked as a full time partner until June 2014. In addition to overseeing the completion of a number of current files and taking on a range of specialist assignments he now holds the position of non-Executive Chairman of the Worrells Group and provides mentoring and consultancy services to the Group. Worrells have recently signed on as a National Partner of IPA.

Ivor’s vast business experience over 40 years as the Head of a progressive, switched-on company that now has 22 Partners and over 100 staff in 15 locations across Australia, has taught him many of life’s lessons. He will willingly share them with you without fear or favour.

Guest Speaker – Official DinnerPeter Hudson Peter is an experienced senior executive in Sports Management and most recently Health

& Wellbeing with Bupa Australia as Head of Market Development. Peter has used his skills over many years and is adept at building teams to deliver desired business outcomes. Peter also had a distinguished playing career with the Hawthorn Football Club and is a 4 time Coleman Medallist (1968, 1970, 1971 and 1977) and in 1971 equalled Bob Pratt’s record of kicking 150 goals in a season. Peter holds the highest goal kicking average in AFL history of 5.64 goals per game.

Presentation 10Michael Andrew AOAppointed as Chair of the Board of Taxation in January 2015, Michael was previously

Chairman and CEO, KPMG International from May 2011 to July 2014. He is the first Australian CEO of one of the “big four” accounting firms and the first to be based in the Asia-Pacific region – he was Chairman of KPMG Asia-Pacific and Chairman, KPMG Australia from 2007 until 2011.He is a former member of the Business Council of Australia and the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum. With degrees in Law and Commerce from Melbourne University he is a qualified Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria as well as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He was recently awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws by Monash University and an Honorary Doctor of Commerce by Melbourne University. He was awarded the Order of Australia in January 2016 for distinguished service to the accountancy profession at the national and international level, and to a range of business, anti-corruption, finance and community organisations.

This Keynote Address is also being delivered to the Taxation Institute of Australia’s National Convention in Melbourne and is anxiously awaited in the light of current political and media commentary, particularly with the Federal Budget just around the corner. IPA Congress Delegates will have the pleasure of Michael’s attendance at the Official Dinner on Thursday evening.

Presentation 11Professor Allan ManningAllan is widely respected as a thought leader in Insurance, Risk Management and

Business Continuity. He is the founder of LMI Group, a firm dedicated to providing a high level of customer service and technical expertise in pre- and post-loss insurance services. He particularly enjoys assisting companies to return to normal trading after a major crisis. For over 40 years, Allan has managed large and complex losses involving major property, business interruption including advanced consequential loss, fidelity, construction and liability throughout Australia, Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. Allan has lectured at RMIT and Melbourne Universities on a range of insurance subjects, and has delivered over 1200 seminars on various topics including risk management, ISR policies and business interruption. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Law and Justice at Victoria University.

Is insurance just another cost to be reduced or is it providing genuine protection against a crisis? Either way it ought to be managed correctly. This session will show the important role you have in getting this right which will also include Business Interruption.

Presentation 12 Dr Michael Schaper FIPAAppointed Deputy Commission of the ACCC in 2008, Michael’s work has a special focus

on small business, franchising, industry associations and business liaison with the national competition & consumer protection regulator. Michael first presented at an IPA Congress in 2009 and has been a regular ever since across all Divisions and at National Congress. A previous President of the Small Enterprise Association of Australia & New Zealand, he brings extensive experience in the area of small business through his previous roles as Small Business Commissioner for the Australian Capital Territory, Dean of Murdoch University Business School in Western Australia, Lecturer at Curtin University and Professor at the University of Newcastle. In 2009 he was recipient of the “National Small Business Champion Award” by the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia.

Small businesses in Australia may soon be protected from ‘unfair terms’ in standard form contracts. Hear from a highly respected regulator about proposed changes to the law and also the pricing traps to avoid when advising small business clients.

Presentation 13Dean PearsonDean is an Industry & Business Economist with over 25 years’ experience in analysing the

economy and assessing the implications both in Australia and globally. He leads a team of analysts responsible for monitoring key economic, business and consumer trends and identifying industries and customer segments which are likely to provide the strongest growth opportunities and greatest risks. Dean’s team is responsible for a number of key publications including: NAB Consumer Anxiety Index; NAB Wellbeing Index; NAB Residential and Commercial Property Surveys; MLC Wealth Sentiment Survey; NAB Online Retail Sales Index; NAB Diversity Index; NAB Work & Family Survey; NAB Charitable Giving Index; and the NAB Asia-Australia Business Engagement Index. NAB is a strategic partner of IPA.

In this session Dean will explore both risks and opportunities facing Australia as we transition post the mining investment boom. In his role as Head of Behavioural Economics (the intersection of economics and psychology) for NAB, Dean will also bring particular focus on the most important thing a business needs to understand – the customer – particularly as consumer anxiety remains elevated.

Presentation 14Tracey Besters FIPA and Julie DolanTracey is an accountant and financial adviser who understands not only the pressures of being in public practice, but also the enormous opportunities that exist with long-standing and new clients alike. Within the SMSF Design business, Tracey as CEO and her team have developed practical frameworks, resources and training to assist professional services firms grow their SMSF revenue and drive a deeper engagement with their clients.

Tracey’s presentation will focus on practical frameworks, tools and resources to help you identify SMSF strategies for your client base leading to more revenue for you and better engagement with your clients.

Julie has had over 20 years’ experience in the SMSF sector. For many years she has provided detailed and high level strategic/technical support and consulting services to many accountants, financial advisors and lawyers around Australia. She also regularly writes for industry magazines and speaks to professionals and trustees on strategic opportunities available to SMSF’s. She is a recognised industry expert in this field.

Julie’s presentation will explore how the simple but powerful concept of Trustee Education can provide you with the necessary tools to make a difference to your bottom line as well as that of your SMSF Trustee clients and their families.

Presentation 15Theashen Vandiar and David Sauer FIPATheashen is a business operations executive and a technical expert responsible for the development and review of training and educational materials. Theashen has an auditing background with extensive experience working in professional accounting bodies and one of the big 4 accounting firms (KPMG). Theashen has also worked closely with universities in the provision of training and education related to the Bachelor of Commerce Accounting and Honours degrees.

The new revenue standard is coming – IFRS/AASB 15 takes a 5 step approach to revenue and may affect the timing of revenue and reported profits. The impact of this standard goes beyond pure financial reporting. Effectively preparing for this change will require a combined effort from accountants, IT personnel, tax experts and other departments in your organisation.

David Sauer (see Presentation 6 for Bio) asks the question in ‘Cutting the Cutter’, can you reduce the content and time taken to produce compliance-based financial reports? This session looks at the standard-setters’ programs of coming changes to do just that, and also the actions you could be taking in your reports and processes right now.

Presentation 16 Vicki Stylianou and Tony Greco FIPAVicki came to the IPA in June 2007 from Federal Treasury and the Office of Best Practice Regulation where she worked in tax policy, financial literacy and prudential regulation. Prior to this Vicki worked as a lawyer in private practice specialising in commercial litigation both in Australia and overseas. She holds Jurisprudence, Laws and Arts degrees and a Masters of Business Administration (International Business). At the IPA, Vicki is the Executive General Manager leading the team responsible for policy, technical and advocacy work, as well as innovation which focuses on matters of interest to SME’s. She has ‘lived and

Before becoming IPA’s Senior Tax Adviser in 2009 Tony had extensive experience as a chartered accountant before venturing into the commercial world in a diversified range of senior management positions. He then became a tax trainer and consultant before becoming the senior tax consultant, then CEO of Taxpayers Australia. Tony is well-respected in the industry as a trainer, presenter and commentator on tax matters. As IPA’s General Manager, Technical Policy he is the Institute’s representative on a number of peak body forums with Treasury, ATO and the Tax Practitioner Board. He has recently been appointed to the Board of Taxation’s Advisory Panel.

In this jointly delivered session you can expect a full regulatory update and an overview on what the IPA is saying on your behalf – FOFA, competition policy, superannuation, tax review and reform and the threats and opportunities arising from technology, innovation automation and digital disruption, will all get an airing.

Presentation 17Ivan Glavas FIPAIvan has had over 19 years’ experience in dealing with corporate and personal

insolvency related matters across numerous industries. Ivan’s experience includes administering Voluntary Administrations and Deeds of Company Arrangements, Litigation Support, Fraud Investigation and Business Reconstruction advice. Ivan has completed the Advanced Insolvency Course with the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Australia and is a member of the Australian Restructuring Insolvency and Turnaround Association.

The session has been designed to provide delegates with an insight into the current business landscape from an Insolvency Practitioner’s perspective, at the same time delivering a “plain talk” on how to identify the different forms of insolvency events and the effect on clients. Delegates will be provided with a checklist of matters they should consider when assisting clients to avoid insolvency and how best to protect their assets.

responsible for delivering operational policy outcomes which support AUSTRAC, its partner agencies and industry whilst leading research to assist understanding of the emerging threats in the anti-money laundering (ALM) and counter-terrorism funding environment (CTF).Bradley joined AUSTRAC in 2004 as the Manager Strategic Analysis and has since progressed to more senior roles representing the agency at several ALM/ATF conferences and summits domestically and overseas. He holds a Masters degree in Policing, Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism.

The presentation will explore the evolution of AUSTRAC since 1989: how it works towards a system free from criminal abuse; its domestic and international partnerships and future opportunities; and challenges for government and industry.

Presentation 19 Petris Lapis FIPAPetris is an all-time IPA favourite and has consistently been the highest rated Presenter
