TINY HOUSES, BIG DREAMS The tiny house movement is growing so quickly this year’s Melbourne Home Show (August 15-19) is set to feature a whole street of them.
The Live a Little Street will display some of the most stylish and sustainable small homes available in Australia, like this one from Tiny Footprint.

WHALE OF A TIMEHumpback, blue and southern right whales are now making their way past the Victorian coastline, headed for warmer climes. The best whale-spotting opportunities are found at the viewing platform at Logan’s Beach in Warrnambool, in and around Portland, and off the coast of Phillip Island.

Q On my bike ride to work, I routinely filter between
two lanes of traffic when they are stopped at a red light, and every so often a motorist will shout at me that I’m breaking the law. I know lane filtering is legal now for motorcycles but what about bikes?Jamie Perez, Elwood
A Lane filtering is the practice of motorcycles
and scooters travelling at low speed through stopped or slow moving traffic, for example at traffic lights.
When you are riding a bicycle on the road, you can overtake a vehicle on the left or right as long as you can clearly see any approaching traffic and can overtake the vehicle safely.You must not overtake a vehicle on the left if it is turning left and indicating left, on the right if it is turning right and indicating right or on the right if it is doing a U-turn from the centre of the road and indicating right.
Q I was talking to a service station attendant about
diesel fuel. He said there were three types: bio, that he didn't recommend to run in my vehicle, normal diesel which was fine and Ultra or Vortex diesel which wasthe best and most expensive. Is this correct? And if so why do the likes of Woolies and Coles servos only sell Vortex? Am I getting ripped off by having to pay more for Vortex?Jamie Gunther, Albury
A Biodiesel, which is usually sold in blended
form with regular diesel, is not widely available in Victoria. There are some specific precautions which should be taken with biodiesel and we recommend familiarising yourself with these before using it. All other diesel sold at the retail level is fine for diesel vehicles. So-called premium diesel fuels claim to 'clean' engines and make them run better, but RACV has seen no proof of this.

From: French Island to Stony Point, where I walk to my job at the primary school.Distance: 4.5km, but feels like a lot longer with a headwind.Method: Stand-up paddleboard.How it started: I’ve been paddleboarding for years and part of the reason I moved to French Island about five years ago was proximity to the water. There’s a ferry but I caught myself rushing to the ferry to get a paddleboard session in before the light faded, so I cut out the middle man.”Best part of the commute: The sealife. There’s a colourful cast out there – seals, dolphins, penguins and dive-bombing cormorants. July and August are where it gets really special though – humpback, southern right and killer whales, all passing by as they migrate up north.”Worst part of the commute: The wind! I always check conditions before setting off but the weather turns quickly. Most memorable sight: My first whale sighting. How something so large can be so gentle still?

RULE?
Using headlights (including driving
lights) on high beam is not allowed within 200
metres an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle
travelling in the same direction ahead of you.
You can flash your headlights briefly to warn a vehicle ahead that you are about to overtake, but for no
other purpose. These rules do not
specify an exemption for divided or dual-lane highways and freeways,
therefore this rule applies on these roads.

IT’S 8.15 ON A THURSDAY MORNING, and Clifton Hill is at a standstill. The entry and exit point of the Eastern Freeway and the key corridor to the western link of CityLink is one of Melbourne’s hardest-working arterial roads and today, like most days, traffic is moving at a snail’s pace.
More than 64,000 vehicles make their way through this location every day, with average speeds during peak hours as low as 20km/h. It’s no wonder this spot has been rated by Victorians as their most disliked. Survey respondents described it as “atrocious” and “the pits”.
RACV manager mobility advocacy Dave Jones says it is clear that Alexandra Parade continues to frustrate motorists the most. “Something needs to be done. People don’t want to wait until North East Link is completed to see what happens. The congestion problem is now,” he says.
