2 Step by step setup

Before you start

1. It is highly recommended that you close all other applications before the installation.

2. On the bill of delivers or on the tag on the hardware key (dongle), you can find thedongle and license number, respectively.

3. Attach your dongle to your computer. Make sure it is securely connected. For furtherinformation regarding hardware key installation, please refer to the documentOVERVIEW_CODEMETER.PDF in the DOC folder of your Visum installation and on theinstallation DVD.

4. Download the license information file (*Init.zip) which fits your dongle number from ourweb server underwww.ptv-vision.com/download Login: Username: tcsPassword: TCSDLB06

(Note:North American customers get the license information files by e-mail)

Installation

1. Insert the Visum Installation DVD. If the DVD does not start automatically, use WindowsExplorer to open the DVD directory. Click on the SETUP*.EXE program to begin theinstallation. Depending on your license, use the Setup with either WIN32or X64in the filename.The following dialog appears.

2. Select English.

3. Click the OK button.

4. Select your license information file INIT*.ZIP, which you can download from our webserver, in the Select filedialog. Take care for information WIN32or X64in the file name.

5. Press NEXTin the subsequent dialog.

6. Accept the general license conditions

7. Select a folder where Visum shall be installed (Note: the default directory isrecommended).

8. You can choose between Standard installation, Full installation and Compact installation(Note:the Standard installation is recommended).

9. Furthermore you can select which components to include in the installation (Note: theavailable components depend on your license):

Additional Data: includes symbols free for use with your Visum projects (e.g. US

state symbols). Junction Preview: provides the functionality for the Vissim preview.

Python: installs the programming language Python and complementary libraries.

Examples: installs various sample Visum networks and examples for using the COMprogramming interface.

Documentation: contains all the software documentation, including documentation ofthe COM programming interface, a document with new features of Visum 12.5 andthe Quickstart Tutorial for getting started. Choose your preferred language fordocumentation here.

Help files: installs the online help files for getting help from within Visum.

10. Specify in which folder of the Windows START menu the Visum shortcuts should be

placed.

11. Specify if you want to add shortcuts to Visum to the Windows STARTmenu, to the quicklaunch bar and/or to the desktop.

12. Follow the instructions of the remaining dialogs to finish the setup.

Optional installation of Python modules

13. If you chose to install Python in step 7, the installation process for additional Pythonmodules starts after the regular setup. Continue with step 16 if you did not select toinstall Python.

14. Select how Python shall be installed, a folder for Python and the additional components.

15. Allow Python a few minutes to complete. Each complementary library selected in step15 will ask if you want to install it and if you accept the licence agreement. Press OK inall the dialogs.

Finishing the setup process

16. You should see the following dialog at the completion of the installation:

Example files

If you are new to Visum, take a look at the Quickstart tutorial in the folder

C:\Users\Public\Documents\PTV Vision\PTV Visum 13\Quickstart Tutorial. The tutorialcan also be opened from a running Visum through the menuHelpExamplesQuickstart. With the help of two example projects, the corefunctionalities of the software are explained step by step (Note: the Quickstart tutorial isonly available if you chose to install the Documentation in step 8).

Explore the examples and short tutorials in the folder C:\Users\Public\Documents\PTVVision\PTV Visum 13. This folder can also be opened from a running Visum through themenu HelpExamplesOpen examples folder. The demonstrated functionalities areexplained in the file README_EXAMPLES_ENG.PDF .

Documentation

Visum manuals can be found on the installation DVD under the Documentation folderand in the DOCfolder of the installation on your hard drive. The default settings duringinstallation for documents is C:\Program Files\PTV Vision\PTV Visum 13\Doc\ENG.

Fundamentals_Visum13.pdf deals with Visum fundamentals such as models andprocedures.

UserManual_Visum13.pdf contains the user manual of Visum and deals with settingsand the basic program operation.

Overview_Visum13.pdf describes the most important new features.

There is also an online help accessible in the Visum menu.

The reference for Visums COM programming interface is contained in the online help.If you installed the examples in step 7, you will find an introductory text and exampleCOM files in the folder C:\Users\Public\Documents\PTV Vision\PTV Visum 13\COM.

OVERVIEW_CODEMETER.PDF and OVERVIEW_DONGLE.PDF provide information about thehardware key. Please consult these documents if you have any problems with yourhardware key.

Service packs

A service pack provides you with all up-to-date data files. At the same time, bugs will befixed and new functionalities will be added.

Get new service packs from our web server. The required login can be found inDownloadServicePacks.txt on the installation DVD in the Documentation folder and inthe DOCfolder of the installation on your hard drive. Choose the service pack whichmatches your license, either win32 or x64.

To install a service pack, start the file UPDATE*.EXEwith a double-click.

Afterwards, choose the installation to which the service pack has to be assigned.

4 Installing Visum in the background

Install Visum in the background (Silent-Installation)

Especially if you want to install Visum on multiple computers in a network environment, it is

useful to run the installation automatically (the so-called Silent-Installation). The installationis then carried out in the background, that means no dialogs appear during the installation,which would demand any user interaction. Proceed as follows if for a silent Visuminstallation:

1. Start the installation of Visum on the command line by using the following parameters (ifnecessary adjust the name of the setup to the name of your setup file name):

Setup_VISUM_13x-xx_win32_Full.exe /SAVEINF="Setup.inf"

2. The installation of Visum is now carried out as described in chapter 2: dialogs areshown in which you can make the settings for your installation. For those settings, aprotocol is recorded into the file SETUP.INF. A Silent-Installation carried out afterwardscan make the necessary settings according to this file, so that no user interaction is

necessary.3. The Silent-Installation is called via the command line as follows:

Setup_VISUM_13x-xx_win32_Full.exe /SILENT /LOADINF="Setup.inf"

Please consider the following when installing VISUM silently:

The licence information file (init*.zip) that is needed for the installation has to be storedin the same folder as the setup. By manually editing the created file SETUP.INFthelocation of the INIT*.ZIPfile can be changed. In that case, add the following line to the fileSETUP.INF: InitZip=(Requires a directory name, no UNC paths;Take care for blanks and umlauts in the path name).

Due to licence reasons, the Microsoft .NET Framework can not be installed during a

Silent-Installation. You have to install it separately on each computer where you want touse Visum.

Further options for the installation

/SILENT:When Setup is silent, the wizard and the background window are not displayed, but theinstallation progress window is displayed. Error messages during installation aredisplayed.

/VERYSILENT:When a setup is very silent the wizard, the background window and the installationprogress window are not displayed. Error messages during installation are displayed.

/NORESTART:Instructs Setup not to reboot even if it is necessary.

/NOCANCEL:Prevents the user from cancelling during the installation process, by disabling theCANCELbutton and ignoring clicks on the CLOSEbutton.

/LOADINF="filename":Instructs Setup to load the settings from the specified file after having checked thecommand line (don't forget to use quotes if the filename contains spaces).

/SAVEINF="filename":Instructs Setup to save installation settings to the specified file (don't forget to usequotes if the filename contains spaces).

Any error message (ex. "Hardlock API Error Code 19") you see when trying to startVisum.
