1. PURPOSE:

The purpose of this method statement is to define and establish a systematic and quality procedure for different activities required for:

Installation of Conduits for the QATAR STEEL 220/66KV SUBSTATION. This process ensures that all works are carried out in a safe manner in accordance with the contract specifications and approved shop drawings.

2. SCOPE:

This method statement covers all activities related to: Installation of Conduits for the QATAR STEEL 220/66KV SUBSTATION. For the satisfaction and approval of the KM, QS, MML

6.1.1 On receipt of the conduits, the materials shall be handled and stored in line with the following procedure:

PROCEDURE 6.1 Handling & Storage:

o Check that the material delivered is as per the approved material

technical submittal o The materials received at site shall be carefully unloaded using

adequate manpower and equipment if necessary under close

supervision such that no damage shall be caused to the materials and injury to personnel.

o Check the quantities and sizes of conduits received against the

delivery documents.

o If necessary, the receiver should make a report with the transporter. If materials got damaged in various parts are detected, it must be witnessed by a representative of the transporter and a written report shall be made in this regard.

o QS,KM.MML will be informed for the materials that we receive and get

materials inspection request for their review and approval. The materials received at site will be inspected whether they are as per approved material submittal.

o Store the conduits in a covered or shaded area. 6.2. Preparation:

6.2.1 Ensure that the relevant shop drawings are approved and issued for construction and required materials are available at site.

6.3. Installation:

o Permission to start has been given by Siemens.

6.3.1 Pre-installation Check

Before commencing the installation of conduits, the supervisor Will check that:

o All preceding trades have completed their works

o All materials are available for the specific area of work.

o All standing scaffolding is safe and suitable for purpose.

o Any mobile scaffolding is safe, has been properly erected to the

manufacturer's instructions and is suitable for purpose.

o If special scaffolding is required, ensure that it is correctly built, safe, suitable for purpose, inspected and labeled by the skilled and authorized person.

o There is adequate temporary lighting.

o Temporary power source is available in the locality and protection

settings are correct.

o Conduits shall be installed in accordance with the GI Materials and Workmanship specification document.

6.3.2 Installation of GI conduits

o The installation and handling of conduits shall be undertaken by

competent and suitably experienced operatives equipped with all the necessary plant tools etc. where appropriate to ensure a neat and tidy installation.

o Conduit used for in-surface installation can fix using saddles strap or

spacer bar saddles. The conduit support spacing should be 1.0 meter for horizontal conduit runs, 1.2 meters for vertical conduit runs and within 200 mm on either side of the bends or boxes.

o Prior to erection all burrs and sharp edges shall be removed from the

conduits together with any dirt, oil or paint which may be present. o Conduit necessarily exposed to the weather during the building

operation shall be protected against ingress of moisture either by means of suitable brass stops or other means as the KM may direct, and have their threads coated with petroleum jelly.

o Conduits shall not be installed in contact with plumbing, mechanical or other services, a minimum separation distance of 150 mm being maintained wherever applicable.

o In conduit runs containing cables up to and including 4 sq mm a

standard draw-in box shall be included at approximately 12 m to 15 m intervals. For cable of size above 4 sq mm suitably sized adaptable boxes shall be installed in lieu of draw-in boxes to facilitate easy withdrawal of cables.

o Installation mock-ups may be required prior to commencement of

work. o If multiple numbers of conduits required due to number of circuits’

main trunking shall be installed with branch of conduits. o Conduit runs between draw-in boxes or adaptable boxes shall

contain nor more than two right angle bends. o Where conduits terminate at distribution boards, adaptable boxes,

switch and socket outlets, etc, the connection shall be made by means of a socket screwed on to the end of the conduit and a smooth bore brass male threaded bush.

o Saddles and distance pieces shall have the same finish as the

conduit for which they are to be used, be the single-way or multi-way as required and be fixed by means of screws in metal or other approved plugs.

o Flexible conduit shall be used for the final connection of rigid conduit systems with suitable adaptor.

6.3.3. installation of Metal Flexible Conduits

o Earth continuity shall be maintained by means of a separate

stranded earth conductor of not less than 2.5mm2

and equal to the live conductor and terminating at the first box on the conduit system. The earth wire shall be attached to the box at each end by means of a sweated or compression socket, screw and spring washers.

Testing:

o All the test reports for the material have been submitted along with the material submittal.

o Toolbox meeting must be conducted and all hazards have to be identified before starting work.

SAFETY:

o Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) to be used by the Task force

during site work.

o Proper tools will be used (cable jack, roller, hangers, etc.) in good

order and to be used for the purpose intended and allowable working capacity.

o Obstacles should be cleared from surrounding area to avoid

accidents.

o All hand and portable power tools to be used shall be of good order and be used for the purpose intended.

Risk Control

1 Adequate personal protective equipment will be worn such as

hand gloves, safety shoes, safety helmet, safety belt, goggles, etc.

2 Safety Toolbox Talks to be provided to all personnel, to promote

awareness of job hazards and risks and required precautions.

3 Trained and competent personnel will be employed for the work.

4 Safe and reasonable access shall be provided for the working areas.

5 Specified/ recommended industrial sockets/ plugs shall be used

for extension wires.

6 Power supply will be switched off when the power tool is kept idle

for longer period.

7 Sufficient lighting to be provided while night work is to be carried out.

Comments Strict supervision to be carried out by the site supervisors.
