IF YOuR CRYSTAl BAll IS a little fuzzy about business prospects in 2015, the best way to get a clear picture of year to come is to buy a ticket to the B/CS Chamber of Commerce Economic Outlook Conference on January 28.

This annual event gathers leaders from the cities, Texas A&M University, and business so they can collectively illuminate how different sectors of the economy, including new businesses and real estate, are likely to change in the coming year.

This year’s conference will feature three panels to describe what is happening at the

national, local and university level, as well as real estate trends and what those changes mean for businesses and local citizens.

Both Bryan and College Station have been in the national spotlight recently scoring in the top 20 on three separate lists measuring growth and economic recovery. The statistics behind those rankings, provided by NerdWallet.com, are part of the preview the Economic Outlook Conference preview that begins on page 6. The keynote luncheon speaker for the conference will be Cindy Yang, head of

PuBliSHeR’SDESK the small business division of NerdWallet.com. Based in San Francisco, NerdWallet creates user-friendly tools, crunches numbers and gives consumers the results. Yang’s conference keynote will focus on the different resources available for small business financing.

So why should you devote a half-day to attending the economic outlook conference? The answer depends on just how much you trust crystal balls and how interested you are in how trends at the local, state and national level will impact your personal economy in 2015.

COllEgE STATION wAS RANKEdas the second-fastest growing city in the nation with Bryan ranked number 17, according to a study completed by Sreekar Jashti of Nerdwallet. Jashti is an analyst for Nerdwallet, a website based out of San Francisco that offers financial advice to its users and “transparency as to what cities are prospering across the U.S.,” says Jashti.

Jashti used three sectors to calculate and compare the 506 cities used in the study based on the 2009-2013 Census to conduct Nerdwallet’s annual “Fastest Growing Cities Study.” These included growth in the working age population, growth of the population actually in the work force, and growth in the median income.

“More people moving there doesn’t necessarily mean that more people are working in the city,” explained Jashti as to why he dug past “sheer raw” population growth

and studied workforce growth. Digging even further into the growth in median income, Jashti says just because there are “more people living there, and more people working there, doesn’t mean they’re making more money.

“What was interesting [was that] a lot of these cities are relatively smaller cities,” says Jashti. “Lots of cities are growing in Texas.”

In 2008, the recession damaged many economies. However, Texas only grew. According to a separate study done by Nerdwallet, “Recession Recovery: Cities that Have Improved the Most,” eight out of the top 10 cities were in Texas. Bryan was named the fifth most improved city since the recession out of a total of 510 cities analyzed based on each city’s labor market and housing market.

The nation overall experienced an average 5 percent growth in population and a surprising negative 2 percent drop in the people in the workforce. College

Despite the recession, slow economic recovery and an overall struggle in the United States, Texas as a whole has come out on top. Within Texas, Bryan/College Station has consistently come out on top in economic indicator ratings, placing in the top 20 on three separate surveys.

Page 7: Insite Magazine January 2015

Station, however, defied these odds. College Station’s population grew by 18 percent, a significant amount in just a few years, but was surpassed by its median income growth at 25 percent, according to Jashti’s research.

According to NerdWallet’s “Texas Cities on the Rise” study, College Station came in seventh, based on the same criteria as the fastest growing cities study. Over the last 13 years, Nerdwallet stated that according to the Dallas Federal Reserve, Texas has had the most growth in high-paying jobs of any other city in the nation. The Texas Triangle, made up of Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, produces upwards of $700 billion in economic output.

Bryan grew 12 percent, which Jashti said is “still a rapid growth” over a four- to five-year period, but Bryan matched the nation’s drop in work force growth. “I think when looking actually at the numbers,

the median numbers for all the workers is a little bit higher in Bryan,” as Jashti said the median income grew by 22 percent.

“As a city, if you’re not growing, you’re dying,” said Chuck Gilman, deputy city manager of College Station. “We’ve been tracking the numbers,” says Joey Dunn, deputy city manager of Bryan. Both were surprised by the high ranking of

Bryan/College Station compared to the country, but were not surprised by the growth.

Not only is there growth through college enrollment, but also an increase of 6 percent to 7 percent in the elementary school districts, says Gilman. “[We] see

Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce Economic Outlook Conference Looking ahead into 2015 with new industry, new commercial and residential construction, knowing where and how those factors will affect the Brazos Valley is a key question. Add to that the future blueprint for growth at Texas A&M University and you have the basis for this year’s annual Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce Economic Outlook Conference.

Presenting panels representing local governance, commercial and residential research trends as well as a keynote address by Cindy Yang, small business expert for NerdWallet.com, the Economic Outlook Conference scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, at the College Station Hilton Hotel will provide insight into how these factors will impact the Brazos Valley economy in 2015.

young families who see this as an option,” said Gilman as he says he can relate to being tired of commuting in major metropolises.

“Downtown has been a really big growth – even in the economic downturn,” says Dunn.

“Being a larger city puts us on the map,” says Gilman, as larger companies are now seeing College Station as a viable option for

business. With the growth, jobs are created not only through the cities, but also through a growing medical district in the area known as the Bio Corridor. A joint venture between College Station and Bryan, “It’s a big deal,” says Dunn.

“Aggies come here, but [before]

no jobs were keeping them here,” says Dunn, but this multimillion dollar development will bring “true high paying jobs to the community.” Having gifted “200 acres…to build the Health Science Center,” Dunn says Bryan has been “heavily invested for 15-years plus.”

“It was a dusty little town,” says Dunn. “It’s amazing to see the growth.” Having lived in the Bryan/College Station area for more than 20 years, Dunn has served in various Bryan city planning and development positions.

“Seeing a growing community – that’s a plus,” said Gilman.

“College towns are seeing a lot of growth in general,” says Jashti. As for B/CS, Jashti attributes this to industry, investments, the low cost of living, and the university. The growth in industry and investment makes for a “more attractive destination to not just college students,” says Jashti. i

Texas Real EstateUPwARD TREND TO CONTINUE

2014 ENdEd AS THE second-best year in Texas in terms of existing home sales, according to a housing market expert with the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University.

“Last year was the second-best year ever recorded for Texas home sales volume,” says Center Research Economist Jim Gaines. “Only 2006, which was at the height of the housing boom and all the easy financing, was better. And 2013 wasn’t far behind. This year is going to become the new second-best year ever. We are having a really terrific year.”

Latest Multiple Listing

Service (MLS) data show sales of existing single-family homes in Texas were nearly 14 percent higher in October 2014 than in October 2013.

About 24,850 homes were sold in October, 3,000 more than the same month last year and about 400 more than in September. The September-to-October upturn is normal, given historical seasonal falloff, says Gaines.

Through October, 242,422 existing Texas homes had been sold, about 2.4 percent more than the same time last year.

“We’re getting what we thought we were going to

get, and that’s a slowdown in the rate of increase,” Gaines says. “[2013] sales went up about 16 percent. It was a big, big jump. This year it’s a much smaller jump. Home prices are doing a very similar kind of thing. There’s been a step-up in prices the last five years, and we’re still seeing that step up. But the rise of the step isn’t quite as high.

“As our prices have been going up progressively here in Texas, incomes really haven’t been going up at the same pace percentage-wise. Home prices going up faster than income means that ultimately affordability and what people can afford to

pay becomes an issue.”Gaines said homebuyers

getting hit the hardest are those on the lower end of the home-price spectrum.

“Very few homebuilders are building homes under $200,000 or $250,000 in most of our markets,” he says. “So there’s no increase in supply on that low-priced end.”

In addition, credit tightness is affecting first-time buyers and first-time move-up buyers much harder than older buyers at higher income levels.

“The good news for Texas is that our prosperity is, in general, still continuing,” Gaines says.

“On the horizon, it appears that it will continue. The only cloud on that horizon is what’s happening in the energy sector. In the last few weeks, the price of oil has dropped appreciably. When oil prices trend downward, you start looking ahead and saying, ‘Okay, just how far can this trend go before it really becomes a problem?’ Right now it doesn’t appear to be, but it’s one of those things we’ve got to keep our eye on.”

BORN ANd RAISEd IN INdIA, Shyam Kannapurakkaran decided to follow his passion for art, and went from being an architect in India, to filming school projects at Texas A&M University, to working on

animated films with Disney. “You meet people that you never even dreamt of. Even if you dreamt it, it was the wildest dream ever,” says Kannapurakkaran.

“Somehow I ended up choosing architecture…it was the best decision of my life,” says Kannapurakkaran of his choice to pursue architecture over computer science. With this degree in India, it offered an internship opportunity where Kannapurakkaran says he learned attention to detail. “When you are working with a tool that can draw a molecule, you have to be very careful about what you draw and what you do not draw,” says Kannapurakkaran.

“We wanted to explore the medium and use it in a way nobody has used it before,” says Kannapurakkaran of one of his most prized projects “Tarang.” Kannapurakkaran worked with fellow students Jonny Greenwald and Ganesh Rao under the guidance of Professor Karen Hillier on a stereoscopic representation of dancer. “Somehow she kept dancing all night for

us,” says Kannapurakkaran of the dancer, Aparupa Chatterjee, who is a renowned dancer in India. The first of its kind, the stereoscopic video collage won first prize at Nvidia Immersive Visualization Challenege and Best Experimental 3D short at

Hollywood Film Festival in 2011, as well as being screened at several film festivals including Big Bear Film Festival. The extended “Tarang” won Roman Bronze Award at the LA 3D Movie Festival in 2012.

“After that I got my first big break, I got a job at Disney,” says Kannapurakkaran, who worked as a stereoscopic artist on “Wreck It Ralph” which came out in 2012. A stereoscopic artist is the person working the 3D-camera on a movie and makes sure that it “reads as a continuous 3D space and everything looks comfortable for the viewing,” says Kannapurakkaran. “I like to use light as a medium to create shapes, and that is one of the reasons why I feel I got into stereo because essentially you are making sculptures of light.”

“I really want to do installations and art projects using stereoscopy and projection mapping,” says Kannapurakkaran, who has since moved on from Disney. Kannapurakkaran now does freelance work and works with a photographer, working on ads and ad campaigns in Hollywood with A-List celebrities.

“I think the best part is to get a reaction out of people…whenever you show them something it’s a really honest reaction…in some way you can make somebody really emotionally moved,” says Kannapurakkaran of his favorite part about being an artist. “As much fun as it is to take an instant picture, it’s a lot of fun just to sit down and let your camera capture the light for several minutes…when you’re pulling light out of the dark, you never know what you’re going to get,” says Kannapurakkaran.

GET fITIN THE NEw YEAR

YOGABy macy mooRe

YOgA PODYOgA POd, lOCATEd ON ROCK Prairie in College Station, is rede-fining the entire concept of yoga. With brightly painted walls and floors and a trickling water wall greeting yogis at the door, yoga seems like less of a workout and more of a fun hobby.

“In an unorthodox way, it’s be-coming more orthodox,” says Cliff Latham, the owner of the College Station Yoga Pod. “It helps unify your mind and body to create fit-ness.” Loving the rigorous workout of boot camps, Latham aimed to

fuse the exercise with the focus and ideals of yoga and thus created studio classes combining the both elements.

YogaTone uses the typical poses you’d encounter in a yoga class, such as downward dog and warrior poses, and implements cardio and weights to create a full body work-out. “I wanted to create classes that would allow you to do yoga and strength training at the same time,” says Latham. “When you take that class, you don’t have to have two separate workouts. You can do it all

at once and truly connect the mind with the body!”

PodBarre is another great class for getting in shape while satisfy-ing your yoga needs. The class centralizes on the core, and helps to sculpt, lengthen, and lean muscles. It tones the arms, legs, thighs, and abdominals all in one class and will have you burning calories the rest of the day.

Don’t be afraid of the class entitled “Yoga for Athletes,” as it isn’t a class full of difficult exercises or cardio, in fact, it’s quite relax-

ing. The session aims to relax the muscles that tend to knot up for athletes. It helps to prevent injury, recover faster, and enhance perfor-mance.

Yoga Pod offers several pack-ages and specials for students and seniors. From dawn until the late hours, classes are offered each day. The Yoga Pod schedule is available online at collegestation.yogapod-community.com.

Located on the top floor of Century Station, Om Grown Yoga uses the modern elements of yoga with the building’s original 1920’s frame to create a unique studio. “We have six solid instructors, including myself,” says Lexi Alexander, the founder of Om Grown Yoga. “We’re all so different, but we’re staying true in the realm of the

Facilitated by fit-ness coach and yoga instructor Susannah McNutt, Yoga in the Gallery offers open space, a room full of art, and a unique ap-proach to fitness.

traditional yoga practice.”Classes take place in two separate rooms with dark wood floors and

windows looking out over downtown. One room is used for the more delicate classes such as classes for beginners or for seniors looking for a gentler session. The other studio hosts yoga classes for the intermediate or advanced student. A smaller room is also available for private instruction.

Before entering classrooms, you’ll encounter a tea bar complete with handcrafted loose-leaf teas blended by Om Grown’s in-house herbalist. Teas include lavender, chamomile, jasmine, and more. Following each class,

everyone is offered a complimentary green tea to complete the session. “You don’t even have to come to do yoga,” Alexander says. “Anyone is welcome to just have some tea and hang out or study.” The tea bar serves to create an environment of community within the yoga studio.

Om Grown Yoga strives to radiate health by calling as a medicinal yoga studio, which sets the organization apart. “The power in breathing is incredible,” says Alexander. “There’s more to it than people want to believe.” For more information, class schedules, and specials, visit www.omgrownyogastudio.com.

Encouraging open communication out-side of class, McNutt discusses nutrition and body awareness to keep track of the differences from one class to the next. Classes are held every Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the SEAD Gallery, located in the Federal Building in Down-town Bryan. The first session is free with subsequent sessions offered at $50 for four classes.

“Yoga is for every-one,” says McNutt. “It doesn’t matter if yoga isn’t your main passion as far as fit-ness goes but if you can incorporate it into your fitness life, you’ll notice it makes

a legaCy OF GRATITUDEBy macy mooRe

THERE ARE NEARlY 20 million military veterans and 1.46 million military service members in the United States. As a nation, we celebrate veterans and service members but one aspect of the military is far too often overlooked: the 2 million children of current soldiers and veterans.

Lee Sechrist, a veteran and former army officer founded Gratitude Initiative, a non-profit organization providing essential education programs and scholarships for children of veterans,

including those wounded in action.

“As a disabled veteran, I understand that these families have been through so much, and there’s no greater way to honor their

service and sacrifice than by providing for their child’s future,” Sechrist says. “The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have had

the most stress on our volunteer force since the 1970s. Their children have been stuck at home, so the families are dealing with challenges, and no one is focusing on the children. That’s where we step in.”

The childhood of those with at least one parent in the military tends to be inconsistent and stressful with the lingering possibility of moving to another location. “One of the key challenges that military children face is that they move a lot,” says Joan Quintana, Advisory Board Member for Gratitude Initiative. “It’s hard moving school to school, finding out where you fit in academically, and there tends to be some academic losses associated with all of those moves.”

Gratitude Initiative provides various education programs, career counseling, college counseling, test preparation, teaching parents about financial aid, online tutoring, and much more. These services are completely free and begin as early as the eighth grade.

GI students are put through an online preparatory program, GI College Success Academy, designed to help a student anywhere

on the globe where their parents are stationed.

“The goal is that when they apply for colleges, they’ll be such a great academic fit for that school, that they’ll maximize their financial aid opportunities at that school,” says Sechrist. It’s no secret that many students entering college are not college ready; it takes practice to learn proper time management and study skills. As such, GI students are required to take a college readiness course prior to their first college semester.

Gratitude Initiative reaches children worldwide through Skype, phone, and email. “We are using technology in a way that children and families understand,” says Sechrist. “We are centrally located, but there will be live people available to talk whenever needed.”

With a goal to enroll 2,000 kids a year into the academic programs, Gratitude Initiative is well on the way to changing the lives of military children.

“When a student graduates from college, it not only positively affects him or her, but it affects their children and their children’s children, and also has a positive impact on their parents,” says Sechrist. “We like to say it creates a legacy of gratitude.” i

In order to raise awareness for the 2 million military children, the House and Texas Senate will declare a Gratitude Initiative Kids Day, or GI Kids Day. State representative John Raney will sponsor the event and has been eager to jump on board with the mission. Held January 27, GI Kids Day will take place at the Texas Capital in Austin.

TopTips for Pregnant momsPregnancy can be a very exciting and overwhelming time, but you may feel your body has been taken hostage! Here are tips that can give you back some control.

PlanIf you are considering pregnancy in the next year, see your doctor for preconception counseling to optimize your health. There is no “perfect” pregnancy. There will be surprises, and that’s okay!

Keep your normal routineA common misconception is that you have to stop or change your normal activity. However, moms that significantly alter their pre-pregnancy exercise regimen are at higher risk for excess weight gain. Consult your physician if you have concerns about continuing your normal exercise program.

Quarantine the scaleA healthy weight gain during pregnancy is 25-35 pounds. Many experience weight loss of up to 5 pounds at the beginning. Don’t let thisalarm you!

Take vitamins dailyYour vitamins should contain 400mcg of folic acid, which decreases the risk of neural-tube defects. Begin taking vitamins at least six months prior to becoming pregnant. Many other medications can and should be continued. Review all current prescriptionswith your doctor. Abruptly stopping or changing medications may worsen your condition.

examine your plateAvoid undercooked or raw meats and seafood as certain dishes can cause serious bacterial infections.

limit internet consultsAlthough the web is a source of information, it is important to remember many sites are not credible. When you have questions, call your doctor.

yes, you can!It is safe to dye your hair and relax in a hot tub. Most cleaning products are safe to use too…even bleach. Strong smells might cause nausea, so try a B6 supplement or ginger.

enjoy this time!Focus on the positive – you’re about to be a mom! And when in doubt, enjoy some pampering. Doctor’s orders!

Dr. John Davidhizar is Board certified in Family medicine and has made it his

medical mission to bring affordable, personalized care to the “family” of patients who enroll in his primary care practice. On call to his patients 24/7 for medical care or emergencies, Dr. John’s philosophy is to bypass the modern doctor’s office approach to care.

“We only have two chairs in our waiting

room, because in our practice you never have

to wait to see a doctor,” explains Dr. John. Whether it’s not being able to get an

appointment when you are sick, or being frustrated with the short amount of time you spend with the doctor when you finally get in the exam room, Dr. John invites anyone unhappy about going to the doctor to learn more about his concierge medical practice.

“Care used to be personal,” says Dr. John. “Concierge medicine is really an old concept made new.”

The most common misconception is that this membership model of primary care is only affordable for the wealthy or elite patient. While mymD BcS is not a replacement for a traditional health insurance, it can be an affordable add-on to a standard high-deductible policy.

“In the first two months as a member of MyMD BCS, I more than paid for my annual membership when Dr. John saved me from an Urgent Care visit,” says MyMD BCS client Denise Fries. “Even worse, I would have had a four-day delay in starting treatment without him.”

Dr. John’s approach is to study each patient’s medical history to develop a wellness plan that minimizes future health problems. “I can’t imagine ever going to see a traditional doctor again,” says Fries.

Yearly memberships are available for individuals, families and there is even a very affordable student plan. “Most of my clients pay more for their cable bill than the monthly cost of joining MyMD BCS,” notes Dr. John. “It is also very affordable for small businesses to offer employees or for business executives – anyone who can’t afford to lose a half-day every time they need to see a doctor.”

For more information on how to return to an affordable, personalized approach to healthcare for you, your family or business, visit mymdbcs.com or email [email protected].

Dr. Doug crumpler knew he wanted to be an endocrinologist at an early age after he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He had a simple goal: do things better. Having diabetes for the last 27 years, he knows the importance of patient-focused medicine.

Early in 2014, his practice eliminated insurance contracts. No more third-party middle men, and no more reduced reimbursements for more

work. Now he could truly focus on his patients. His office is now able to assist patients in filing claims for reimbursement on their own, which really engages the patient to invest in their own healthcare and take charge.

Concierge medicine is another aspect of the practice that takes patient-centric medicine to the next level. By paying a retainer fee for the year, the patient ensures 24/7 access to Dr. Crumpler and his staff. Along with guaranteed appointments, wellness and preventative care, and weight loss management,

Dr. Crumpler is also able to guarantee his time for his patient. Something that many physicians are unable to do.

With implementation of the Affordable Care Act and reduced Medicare reimbursements along with the uncertainty of the health

insurance market, it is thought that concierge and out-of-pocket medicine will become more commonplace.

Since its inception, Sherwood Health care, inc. has provided for the needs of thousands of seniors in the Brazos Valley.

Sherwood was constructed in 1964 through the collaborative efforts of the late John Cecil Culpepper, Sr. and the late Honorable Bill Moore. Continuing in a tradition of service, the Culpepper and Moore families are proud to announce Generations Healthcare, opening in Spring of 2015. This 124-bed facility will include services essential to maintaining quality of life for seniors.

At the Generations Center, care plans are created to determine levels of care and senior’s need for assistance

provided. The daily living activities are used to measure seniors’ functional abilities.Skilled nursing services are available with skilled nursing aides available 24 hours a day.

Help aging Parents and loved ones

When your aging relative is facing this age in their lives, it may be difficult for them. The best thing you can do is to be there for them, and help them adapt to their new life. You can start by helping your aging parent or loved one learn about the different

senior living options available. To help them with feelings of loss of independence, consider a single resident room rather than sharing with a roommate. Later on, they might seek to share a room with someone else.

Something that sets Generations Center for Senior Living apart from most other assisted living homes is that skilled nursing; therapy and rehabilitation services are all available on one campus.

How do i know if my loved one needs skilled nursing?

A short-term stay in skilled nursing most often occurs after a hospital stay. In these cases, it isn’t uncommon for residents to eventually transition back to their home. Other times, a long-term move to a skilled nursing facility occurs because a senior cannot receive the care they need at their home. In this case the required care is more financially feasible at Generations Center for Senior Living.

To learn more about all the services available through Generations Center for Senior Living, visit 2827 Kent Street in Bryan, call (979) 776-7521, or visit www.generationsbcs.com.

The Brazos Valley region lacked a psychiatric health facility for more than 15 years until Rock Prairie Behavioral Health opened in college Station in 2014 providing the opportunity for people to be treated closer to home.

The new psychiatric hospital will eventually hold 72 beds and offer inpatient and intensive outpatient care for patients of all ages. Lyle Reece, RN and vice president of administration for Strategic Behavioral Health, is the acting CEO. The multidisciplinary staff includes psychiatrists, nurses, medical physicians, therapists, and other trained personnel to meet the individual patients’ needs.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that one in every five Americans has a mental disorder, yet fewer than one-third of affected adults and one-half of affected children receive treatment. The staff at Rock Prairie Behavioral Health understands the importance of addressing the full spectrum of each patient’s needs, whether mental, physical, spiritual, or emotional.

While the hospital is not intended to house patients long-term, it does provides a place of safety for people who may be a hazard to themselves or others while receiving the care and treatment needed to give patients hope and purpose as

they reenter the community. The facility encourages families to be involved in the rehabilitation process.

Services include an Inpatient Program, the Partial Hospitalization Program, which is a day program, and an Intensive Outpatient Program. The hospital offers free clinical assessments 24/7, by appointment or on a walk-in basis.

The hospital will work in conjunction with the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Brazos Valley, local law enforcement, hospitals, and churches. Agreements have been made with both Texas A&M

University and Blinn College to provide internships and other training opportunities for nursing and medical students.

Rock Prairie Behavioral Health is available to serve residents and the community by giving stability and hope for a healthier future. Heather Reynolds, LPC, is director of business development and notes that Rock Prairie Behavioral Hospital accepts Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare and most commercial insurances.

everything about a visit to mattress Sleepcenters can be summed with one word: “comfortable.” The atmosphere, the honesty, the fair prices, and, of course, the mattresses themselves all evoke a comfort that seems totally foreign to the furniture-shopping experience.

The sleep experts at family-owned Mattress SleepCenters aren’t just in it for the sales – they make education a priority. They shift the emphasis from pushing the sale to explaining the mattress, finally allowing you to make your own well-informed decision. Picking the right mattress is something of an art, a balancing act between comfort preferences, much-needed bodily support, and affordability.

“With the constant innovations in bedding technology creating so many choices, it’s hard to stay in

the loop and pick the best bed for you,” explains Murray Carstens, who opened Mattress SleepCenters in 2005. “We simplify that process by keeping an up-to-date inventory and by educating our customers, so that together we can pick out the exact bed you need for a good night’s sleep.”

With over 80 years of combined experience in the business of sleep, the professionals at Mattress SleepCenters have witnessed the industry’s changes and developments. They know the best brands and most reliable materials, and they’ve seen what mattresses stand the test of time.

Relying on this accumulated expertise, the Mattress SleepCenters specialists can find the right amount of support for any customer. “The factors that affect support are age and body type, and everybody’s different,” says Kolby Horner, one of the store’s comfort experts. “Everybody needs support, and the difference is in the level of firmness and in people’s preferences. Our job is to find the best possible option for you.”

Luxurious comfort isn’t limited to the bedroom, however. Mattress SleepCenters is the exclusive retailer for Stressless Chairs and recliners and Ekorness sofas and seating systems. This elite line of luxury furniture

is the essence of comfort, and fits in perfectly with the Mattress SleepCenters environment. “Each Stressless Chair is a custom fit,” explains Kolby. “They come in small, medium and large sizes. It’s just like finding a mattress here – it’s all about you.”

To learn more about how to find your personal best sleep choice or to experience the custom comfort of Stressless Chairs and the entire line of Ekorness seating systems, visit Mattress SleepCenters at 1402 Harvey Road near the entrance to Post Oak Mall, or call (979) 696-3900 or visit mattresssleepcenters.net.

max Brand, one of Brazos Valley’s leading realtors, has achieved the prestigious accredited land consultants designation. There are only forty-one such designees in the state of Texas. This designation is conferred to only land specialists who complete a rigorous education program and who achieve a volume of successful transactions.

Dr. Brand is known as a “hard charging, get things done, Realtor;” others know him as the pastor of New Hope Church of Navasota, located at Hwy 105 E and Hwy 6. Max combines his “get things done attitude” with compassion and honesty.

Max graduated from Houston Baptist University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary of Fort Worth, where he earned a master’s degree and a doctorate. He was ordained by Dr. John Bisagno at First Baptist Church of Houston.

After serving churches out of state, he returned to the Brazos Valley, where family ties pulled him back to his roots. These ties dated back to the 1820’s when his great-grandfather bought land near Navasota, known as the Fahey Ranch. The ranch was later purchased by the Boy Scouts of America and is known as Camp Bovay.

Upon returning to Navasota, Max determined there was a need for a new church. Contacting the convention, his analysis was confirmed. With credentials far exceeding what was required, the convention stated that in three or four years the money would be available to plant this new church.

The response from Dr. Brand was, “I’m almost fifty years old. I don’t have time to wait on beginning this church.”

A real estate broker who is a friend of Max’s wife, Sheila, said, “I believe in what you are doing, and I will pay your salary for the first six months. You will get YOUR real estate license and then God will pay your salary.” Now eight years later, the church is flourishing and God continues to pay Max’s salary.

BV Trash Valet & Recycling is a local company offering recycling service to homes, apartments, and businesses. Seeing a need for an easier way for their community to “go-green,” co-owners Ricky and Jessica Hux, along with Ron and Katie Fox, started the business four years ago. The service is easy and can save money.

“We are able to accept a wide range of materials such as newspaper, cardboard, all paper, glass, aluminum, and plastics #1-#7 without the need to sort. Everything can go into one container,”

says co-owner Ron Fox. “We have found that many of the businesses who recycle with us have been able to cut back on their traditional disposal service and haul-off fees and instead utilize our low-cost

program – in turn saving money for their business and doing what is right for our environment and community.”

Brazos Valet Trash Valet & Recycling has been honored as: 2011 business

With 10 daily shuttles from college Station to George Bush intercontinental airport (iaH) and four to the Houston Hobby airport (HoB), there is no reason to not let GroundShuttle.com make your next trip easier. Rates start as low as $30, and the comfortable vans with independent reclining seats offer convenient schedules to George Bush Airport (IAH)

and Hobby Airport (HOU) in Houston. GroundShuttle.com also provides transportation to surrounding airports upon request for groups and in-town transportation to meet your specific needs.

Ground Shuttle is also excited to partner with Starline Travel https://travelstarline.com to offer city service to Downtown Houston, University of Houston and Cypress. You can learn more or book your tickets now at TravelStarline.com.

about GroundShuttle.com

Q. Are your scheduled arrival times into IAH accurate?

A.Scheduled arrival times into the airport are accurate. The scheduled arrival into IAH is two hours after the departure time from Easterwood airport even though the travel time is closer to 1.5 hours. There are things during the route that cannot be controlled like traffic, accidents, etc. Please keep in mind there is drop off at every terminal in IAH and it cannot be guaranteed you will always be the first one dropped off. It is recommended you give yourself enough time based on your itinerary and airline requirements. If you are scheduled on a flight that departs IAH or Hobby less than 1.25 hours after the scheduled arrival time, GroundShuttle.com will not be responsible if you miss your flight.

Q. Do you have other schedules besides the ones posted on line?

A.You can set your own schedule with the GroundShuttle.com charter service, which can pick you up from your house or specified location within our service area at any time (day or night) and take you to or bring you from Houston airports. View the Charter Service page at GroundShuttle.com for more information.

Q. How do I pay?A.

The GroundShuttle.com system requires you pre-pay your reservation online or through the phone in order to reserve your seat. Payments are processed through Pay-Pal. Drivers have the ability to take payment via credit card or cash if you do not have a confirmed reservation and wish to take the shuttle as a stand-by passenger from the airports however the price is higher if you do not pre-pay your reservation.

For more information, visit GroundShuttle.com or call (855) 303-4415.

a little over 40 percent of the population that reaches age 65 will enter a nursing home. most of us that enter a nursing home will stay two and one half years. The median annual cost for a nursing home is $73,000. The average retiree has saved just $43,000 in their personal retirement account, which will not pay for one year of nursing home care. You could impoverish yourself and let Medicaid pay your way, but that will only cover 50 percent of your costs. The remainder has to

Dr. Scott lingren is the founder of Venus Pest company, a pest control company with locations in college Station and Dallas. He is Texas a&m class of ‘99 with a PhD in entomology.

How insects survive winter

Even though insects are cold blooded, their bodies don’t freeze at the same temperature as water. Their blood is full of salts and sugars. For the same reason that dumping salt on bridges keeps ice from forming, insect blood won’t freeze at 32 F. That, and their behavior of seeking shelter during the winter allows them to survive temperatures well below freezing. Wasps, lady

beetles, and stink bugs are a few insects that are actually considered pests in the fall and early winter when they seek shelter inside houses.

How to tell what is making noise in your attic - without actually going up there

First of all, critters in the attic sound about 10 times as big as they actually are, so if it sounds like a large dog is in your attic, it’s probably a Raccoon or Opossum. If you hear mainly light scratching at night, its probably a mouse. Rats and squirrels sound basically the same size in an attic, but you will only hear rats at night while squirrels will

make noise only at dawn or dusk.

How to survive a killer bee attack

If you ever experience the misfortune of being attacked by bees, this information can save your life. You should first cover your face with your hands, leaving enough space between your fingers to see. Next, run away. Even killer bees won’t chase you for much more than a half mile. If possible, get inside a house or car. Once inside, bees will become disoriented and will not be able to attack others that may be inside. DO NOT jump in water. Bees will wait longer than you can hold your breath. DO NOT swat at the bees. They are extremely attracted to motion and swatting will cause more bees to attack you.

it’s very common to hear doctors say, “eat more fish. eat less meat.” you’ll especially hear this on your yearly medical check-up this upcoming 2015. Why eat more fish, you ask?

Fish has many benefits, most of these life-enhancing, plus, it is a low-calorie food that is also delicious and easy to prepare. The human body can’t produce Omega-3’s by itself, but it needs them to be healthy. Fish is packed with Omega-3’s, especially

Salmon, Tuna and Halibut. Just one 4-ounce piece of salmon contains 1.5 grams of omega-3 fatty acids.

Other benefits of consuming more fish include: less risk of heart disease

(Journal of the American Heart Association), reduction of Alzheimer’s risk (Radiological Society of North America), general improvement of skin and hair, as well a sunless dose of Vitamin D.
