Keeping up with its tradition, this year too Gujarat Law Society

organized a farewell function for the members of GLS Family who retired this year. These are the members who have spent virtually their whole life in GLS. Obviously, it was difficult to say goodbye.

This year GLS bid adieu to fourteen members. Spending most of one’s conscious hours at the workplace, retirment would undoubtedly leave a significant vaccuum in the family tree of GLS. All the heads of the family - Shri N. R. Shah, Executive Director, GLS, Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati, Executive Vice President, GLS and Shri Bhalchandra Joshi, Registrar, GLS remained present to say goodbye to their family members.

Shri N R Shah’s speech was literally ‘Ashirvachan’ coming from a grandfather. Along with his blessings and good wishes for the retirees’ future, he pointed out that there are three things that human beings are

usually obsessed with. Bhutkaal no bhar (baggage of the past), Bhavishya ni Bhiti (Fear of future) and Vartmaan na Vaandha (problems of present). If we could manage to get rid of these three, life would be easy and fun.

Shri Sudhirbhai, on the other hand gave a very light

hearted speech. He remembered how GLS had to put up with a difficult employee once, and reassured that the retirees could never be that difficult. In fact, he reiterated his generous offer that GLS is ready to hire one member from a retired peon’s family so that the flow of

income continues. Some of the retirees also

shared their feelings at this juncture. And all of them unanimously felt one thing in common: that it was not possible to ‘leave’ GLS. They may be retiring from their jobs, but GLS will always be their family.

EVENTS & ACHIEVEMENTS

CELEBRATION OF ‘WOMEN’S DAY’ AT GLSEMPS

GLS English medium Primary School Celebrated ‘The

Women’s Day’ in a novel way!

“NARI TU NARAYANI” –play based on the multifaceted role of the

women in society and the homes in it-was staged at the Gls Auditorium on 1st March 2013 as a part of women’s day celebration. The play glides from past to future, the events leap from mythology to modern times and the venues

change from the heavenly abodes to the earthly homes. A visual show of women achievers was integrated in the programme to commemorate the high energy powered women, which included Mother Teresa, Lata

Mangeshkar, Rani of Jhansi, Sunita Williams, Kiran Bedi, and more.

The programme was an innovative approach to the top notch social issues to date like Attitude of woman in family, Neglect of senior citizens,

Gromming of children, Discrimination of girl child/boy child and left the audience thinking and analyzing.

The characters of “Rangla and Rangli” filled the play with lighter tones amidst the gravity of the play.

C U SHAH PREPARATORY SCHOOL ORGANIZED ITS PRIZE DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION WHERE IN ALL THE WINNER WERE AWARDED VARIOUS PRIZES AND GOLD MEDALS. IN THE PICTURE WE SEE PRINCIPAL OF THE SCHOOL SHRIMATI ANSUYA JHAVERI FELICITATING THE STUDENTS.

by their adept coaches – Shri Sharadbhai for cricket, Shri Prakashbhai for football and Shri Gohelbhai for volleyball. They were fully supported by their respective Principals and P.E. Sirs of C U Shah Primary School, GLS English Medium School, N R Primary School, K N Primary School, M K Secondary & Higher Secondary School & N R Secondary & Higher Secondary School. Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati, Executive Vice President, Gujarat Law Society spared time and came to see how the camp goes. However, after seeing the involvement of the students, he could not stop himself from playing cricket!

One parent, Mr. Manish Bhagat, father of Raj Bhagat (N R Primary School), gave his views on GLS sports wing. He appreciated Management’s efforts to organize the summer camp sports activity. He was very much impressed by the efforts put up by P.E. Sirs and coaches for utilizing such a big playground. He also suggested to continue this training

throughout the year and he wanted this training for girls also. He was glad to get the opportunity for sending his ward in his own institution instead of sending them to other schools for sports training. He appreciated this sports activity to such an extent that he was willing to give a supporting hand to continue it throughout the year.

The last day saw the closing ceremony. The programme was

ably compeered by Smt. Belaben Mehta, Principal, C U Shah Primary School. The participants were given certificates of appreciation by the Chief Guests Shri Dhwaj Haria – Billiard Champion student of F. Y. B Com of S M Patel Institute of Commerce & Ms. Suhani Shah, the Skating Champion. Their presence was an inspiration to all the young sports enthusiasts. The impressive gathering of parents provided a boost to their

wards. The proud parents even expressed their sincere wish to continue such camps in the near future also. The programme concluded with a scoop of ice-cream and long lasting joyous memories.

Feedback There are many Summer

camps held everywhere during vacations. But I selected our school’s Cricket Summer Camp because I like this sport very

much and it was in our own school campus. I not only learnt expert tips regarding the game but also understood my importance as a team member. During these days whenever I had some difficulty our sir helped me and guided me. I am thankful to GLS for putting up such type of summer camp and hope for the same in the coming years which will enhance my speed, skill and stamina.

It became very helpful to understand my daughter’s potential strength and I could easily know what she can do in future. On the basis of the result of the test it becomes very easy for the students to decide career amongst the options given. Because of good graphical presentation of result of the test.

We can easily understand in which field our child is good at.

We are thankful to the school and the team of Karmasu to give our children the platform to prove their abilities.

Somebody has said “if you watch a game, it’s fun. If you play it, it’s recreation!” In this season of IPL, when most children were busy ‘watching’ the game, GLS students played it, and many more! The 20 day summer camp organized by Gujarat Law Society was an immense success that made the ground livelier. Have glimpses of hustle and bustle on the ground here!

PLAY REVIEW

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Welcome Jindagi

By Nirja Vasavada

Ahmedabad is usually notorious for lagging behind when it comes to

art and theatre. It is a general impression about this city that people would rather do some more business than waste time watching plays. However, in the past few years Ahmedabadis are changing this impression. They are getting more aware about theatre, and have started thinking beyond a usual slapstick comedy.

Welcome Jindagi is one such play that makes us think. Presented under Kiran Bhatt and Kiran Sampat’s prestigious banner ‘Khelaiya’, the play is

written and directed by Saumya Joshi. The play deals with real people, people whom we see every day, whom we know, and perhaps who we are. This familiarity strikes the audience in the very first scene, and since then, the audience starts relating themselves with the action going on the stage.

The story revolves around a small Gujarati, rather Kathiawadi family living in a one and a half bedroom flat in Mumbai. Life has not been easy for Arun Ganatra, the ‘head’ of the family (Saumya Joshi), and his wife Bhanu (Jigna Vyas). Therefore, their only purpose in life, like most of us, is to make it easy for their only son Vivek (Abhinay Banker). The son also

cares a lot for both his parents. However, in the core of the play there is discomfort between father and son. And this discomfort arises from huge communication gap. The only bridge between the father and the son, is, Bhanu, an extremely shrewd housewife. Bhanu is not only the bridge between the father and the son, but also between the audience and the stage. She is the sutradhar who connects the audience by talking to them directly, by making audience a part of the

play. She is the charm of the play, providing the light tone tongue in cheek humor in the serious theme.

The play, however, is not only about communication or generation gap. As one critic says, it “delves into the myriad emotions and psychological interplay that prevents people from accepting another’s point of view.” The stage set up is also quite smart. Every prop, whether it is telephone, unrepaired bell, a belt, glass of water or even the rain, has its

own significance woven in the storyline. The background music, especially in the climax scene increases the dramatic conflict.

All the actors, especially Jigna Vyas, have done an excellent job. As Saumya Joshi says in one of his interviews, “the quintessential middle-class Mumbai family that is shown in the play is a complete deviation from the normal commercial Guajarati theatre ethos.”

All in all, this is a must watch play. More shows are going to be staged in the month of May. Keep an eye on the ads!

MOVIE REVIEW

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar Director: Mansoor KhanCast: Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, Faisal khan Because memories never grow old!

When I first saw Jo jeeta wohi sikandar, I was merely

ELEVEN, my cousin sister, with three years of experience over me, was just stepping into junior college. After watching the movie, I used to scramble out of bed, just to see her dress for college and my mind use to conjure exciting situations for

her. I envied her every single step of the way. I couldn’t wait to grow up and get absorbed in college life and high school romance. Once in a while comes a movie created with painstaking effort and care, one that actually involves you and entertains you all through and leaves you longing for more. And sure enough, there would be very few people who would have watched Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar only once. For most youngsters like me, it was an aspirational theme, and for the others, sweet regret for what might have been in their own lives. And for bicycle races, a dream runs in popularity for at least a couple of years. This movie undoubtedly is my one of the

fav movie! With easy style and an

amazing authenticity, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is a real treat. Songs like “Pehla Nasha” and “Yahan Ke Hum Sikandar”, the beautiful locales of Dehradun, and, of course, Aamir Khan, make this the kind of movie you

always expect to watch but rarely get to. Aamir in the role is unbelievably endearing. This was probably Ayesha’s only memorable performance - the subtle and understated dignity that she brought to the role made many male teen hearts wonder when a friend like that would come into their lives. If you haven’t watched this one, believe me, you are missing something.

The movie was all a movie could be. Is all a movie can be. It’s inspiring, it’s motivating, and the plot line is interspersed with humour and alternated with reality. Every college going youth is bound to identify with this movie. It is a film which transcends the confines

of generations and holds true every time! Everybody wants to be a winner, if only to impress their latest crush. Everybody wants to be appreciated and accepted. And everybody naturally despises Mr./Ms popular. But being popular does not equate to being a winner. Love cannot grow at the mercy of superficial nuances and victory is the sweetest when you have laboured for it! All messages conveyed in one single movie! Today, when the college days are reduced to memories, I still pull out a CD of JJWS and relive my moments through the laughter on screen!! I did say it was a movie that could be watched ANY time, didn’t I?

ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE...

Students of GLS have certainly brought the world on the stage in the

past few months, and a glimpse of it was seen in the last social club gathering. Students of C U Shah Primary School and S M Patel Institute of Commerce have used theatre to talk about two different, but burning issues of our society.

Prithvi ke Chakke me Puncture is a street play performed by the primary students as a part of Prithvi

Vandana – a National Theatre Festival organised by Panasonic India along with its implementing agency partners Nehru Foundation & Eco - Roots Foundation. Fighting through tough levels of Competition amongst different Schools of the city, the play bagged the Winner’s Trophy. It also qualified to compete amongst presentations from 23 states of the country at New Delhi on 2nd May,13. The performance was described

as ‘flawless clean act that served the purpose of its staging’ by Mr. Rahul Dev, Editor, Live India. The theme of the play is Save Environment. The children, very poignantly suggest that an essential balance is required to be maintained so that life on the earth remains healthy & vibrant. It is unfortunate that human beings in the pursuit of establishing their domain, are non-judiciously altering this supportive cover. As a

consequence we have been facing the aftermath, the latest earthquakes being the recent example.

Students of S M Patel Institute of Commerce talk about another crucial issue which we have been facing in their play ‘Tu Ladje Anamika...’ The play deals with the recent gang-rape case in a very humane manner. The students of SMPIC have also given a few professional performances of the play at Natrani, Usmanpura. The play

written and directed by Abhishek Shah, won the ‘Best Play Award’ in one of the most reputed INT and Gujarat Samachar Drama Competition.

When both the plays were performed on one stage in the social club gathering, the audience could see the emotional involvement of the actors. And this involvement, in turn, was mirrored in the audience. Indeed, what better way could there be to reach the society, than theatre?! Keep it up, players!!
