PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
NOVEMBER 2012
As they say, Time Flies When You Are Having Fun!
Here it is November and the year, and my term as President, is rapid-ly coming to a close. This month, I want to remind you of a number of things to do before this year ends.
First, don’t overlook the Member-ship Renewal Form in this month’s Tales. If you have not already sent in your check, why not do it now, before the Holiday expenses start rolling in? This year we must report our membership to the national or-ganization, JCNA, earlier than ever, and our new Membership Director, Gerry Wilburn, would appreciate getting a jump on the job. Also, don’t forget to sign up for the Christmas Party in December. That form is also included in this edition. It will be another Gala Event with the Yacht Club decked out in its fin-est. Every year we see some faces
at the party that we have not seen since the year before. Come out, have a good time, and renew some old acquaintances.
We have a tour planned for Novem-ber 10. A drive through the Angeles National Forest and lunch at New-comb’s Ranch. More details inside this issue. Also in November you will be receiv-ing your ballot for the 2013 Club Of-ficers Election. Please do drop it in the mail so that we have as many voting members as possible. We have a good slate this year and you can read about them further on in this edition.
Finally, I want to renew by call for someone to serve as Webmaster for the Club’s website. I know that not
everyone has the talent and train-ing for this, but at least the younger generation seems to have this stuff wired. Perhaps you have a son or daughter, or grandchild that has the skills. Having served as Webmaster for the JOC would look great on their resume. Contact me if you have any ideas.
Wishing all of you a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!

“I’m pleased to introduce our new mem-bership chair. Jerry is a serious car and motorcycle aficionado and we are glad to have him focusing his time and energy to help with membership. Although Jer-ry is the Chair, every member should be on the lookout for new members. If you know someone who loves their Jaguar as much as we do, give them an appli-cation! Also, sincere thanks to my friend, Stan McCartney for his years of dedicat-ed service. -ED
During his wayward youth Gerry was also a NationalMotorcycle Racing champion with the AFM and towed the Ducati to the races with a Morgan Drophead. The fam-ily currently campaigns a Peerless road-ster (Birdcage Morgan) in vintage races, though the driving duty has been passed on to son, John.
In the past, Gerry has been Membership Chairman for the Classic Car Club, The Ferrari Owners Club and the Mercedes Benz Club. Gerry is currently the Mem-bership Chairman for the Morgan Plus 4 Club.

The Jaguar Conspiracy-a murder mystery by Paul McNabb
-just in time for Christmas gift giving! The Jaguar Conspiracy is scheduled for publication on November 1, 2012. The book is a standard murder mystery but with classic Jaguars as the central part of the story. Available in ebook and trade paperback from your favorite book seller, although local bookstores will probably have to order the book for a while. Should be available immediately through Amazon and for those wanting hard-copy, if you purchase directly from the publisher, price is discounted about 45%. Just go to Mitchell-Morris Pub-lishing (www.mitchellmorrispublishing.com) and click on the book cover and then follow the directions.(Caution: This book is packed with rich people behaving extremely badly! not for the faint of heart!).A great gift for Jag lovers and especially useful for those pesky Porsche and Fer-rari owners as they have nothing like this to get back at you.In 2006, I was asked by Philip Porter to begin writing a monthly column in E-
type Magazine (www.e-typeclub.com), aptly named The Mcnabb Report. My assignment was to write about owners, cars and events in north America. One of the very first interviews I man-aged to set up was with a restorer named Terry larsen, who lived in Mesa, Arizona. His specialty was restoring C- and D-type Jaguars, racing cars from the fifties, as well as other significant Jags. I visited various auctions in Scottsdale during the week then arrived at his home and shop on Saturday morning. He warned me he was very busy so I’d have to be quick. He’d excavated down a level, built a large shop and garage then covered it over in dirt when he was finished, an ingenious way of keeping the work area cool in the summer and warm in the winter. At the time he owned a Jaguar team D-type raced by Stirling Moss in the 1956 le Mans and a C-type with a California racing history. He raced both of the clas-sic Jags in the vintage racing series on the west coast. It was the first time I had seen a real C- or D-type Jaguar and I guess seeing the cars and shop made quite an impression. On the flight home, I started dreaming up a story about a C-
type Jaguar in an underground garage.Paul McNabb email: [email protected] cell: 805 263 3836

- Introducing the All-New 2013 Jaguar XF 3.0 -
The new 3.0L V6 Supercharged engine is based on the all‐aluminum architecture of the Jaguar V8 engine, providing a re‐fined and smooth power delivery. This new engine finds it’s bloodline from the current Jaguar V8 engine. The all‐alumi‐num architecture of the V8 forms the ba‐sis of Jaguar’s new supercharged V6. The engine will be presented in two states of tune depending on its application; the 380hp version and a 340hp version.
The new quad‐cam V6 shares its all‐alu‐minum construction with the V8, with the lightweight die‐cast block supple‐mented with cross‐bolted main bearing caps to increase rigidity and therefore refinement. The valves themselves are subject to control by a dual indepen‐dent variable cam timing (DIVCT) sys‐tem which is activated by the positive and negative torques generated by the movement of the intake and exhaust valves. This variable timing system fea‐tures actuation rates of more than 150 degrees per second throughout the rev range, to optimize power, torque and economy at all engine speeds.
This responsive and uninterrupted pow‐er delivery is made possible through the use of spray-guided direct injection (SGDI) which delivers precisely mea‐sured quantities of fuel directly into the center of the combustion chambers at pressures of up to 300 bar (2,176 PSI). The fuel is delivered several times during each combustion cycle, creating a more homogenous air‐fuel mixture for cleaner and more efficient combustion. To maxi‐mize combustion efficiency, these spark plugs are precisely oriented both in rela‐tion to the injector and within the com‐bustion chamber. The compression ratio is also raised from 9.5:1 in the super‐charged V8 to 10.5:1 in the supercharged V6, further improving fuel economy and reducing emissions.
Mounted in the ‘V’ of the engine is lat‐est-generation Roots-type twin vortex supercharger, which is the key to achiev‐ing high-specific output and efficiency. A water‐cooled intercooler reduces the temperature of the intake air to optimize power and efficiency. The supercharger boost control is electronically managed by new Bosch engine management soft‐ware. The engine features a system of counter-rotating front and rear balancer weights which lend it the same smooth‐ness and refinement characteristics as its larger V8 brother.
The V6 powertrain will be completed by a Jaguar-tuned ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. This transmission’s large spread of ratios allows the engine’s pro‐digious power to be fully exploited while optimizing economy and emissions.
Efficiency is also boosted by an Intelli‐gent Stop-Start system which improves fuel consumption by up to seven per cent in European Test Cycle.* Utilizing a twin solenoid starter, the system is able to restart the engine in less time than it takes for the driver’s foot to move from the brake to the accelerator. In engine stop-start ‘change of mind’ scenarios, it is able to reenergize the engine via rap‐idly reintroducing fuel into the cylinders.

INLAND EMPIRE CONCOURS RESULTS
By Steve Kirby
The cool air at 5000 feet provided a much needed respite for JOC members who trekked to Idyllwild for the Sixth Annual IEJC Concours. Temps had been pushing 100 throughout the LA basin for a week or more when we set off for the hills on Friday, October 5th. This was the “maiden voyage” for the new Mark 10, which had been exhibiting some over-heating problems, so we were watching the temp gauge with trepidation. Fortu-nately the last minute fan clutch replace-ment did the trick through the heat and traffic until the thermometer started to drop as we climbed the mountain.
After checking into our cabin, with son and daughter in law in tow in the XK150, we shared wine and cheese with sev-eral JOC members and others from the IEJC and San Diego Clubs. We even had an intrepid traveler from Salt Lake City (though his beautiful XK140 was trailered). In all nearly 40 cars competed the next day.
Unlike the last two years when rain (and a little vandalism) marred our visit, Satur-day dawned clear and cool. A jacket and coffee were “derigeour” for the morn-ing’s wiping and polishing. As the cars pulled into the parking lot, the show was on. Many locals and visitors stopped by to admire the cars and a great day was had by all.
As usual, the IEJC handed out some unique trophies. Second and third place winners received the classic IEJC “melted Jaguar brand vodka bottles”, while class winners ac-cepted a piece of local sculpture with a mountain theme. The host Idyllwild Inn was accommodating as usual, even pro-viding car wash facilities for our use.
Next year’s Concours may be scheduled for the second week in October so as to coincide with the local Art and Wine Fes-tival. Watch your Tales for details. All in all, another great event hosted by the IEJC. Thanks to them, and to all the judg-es, for making this event so much fun.

Jim says he looks forward to serving the Club for another year.
Judy Graven – secreTaryJudy and Larry Graven joined the club in 1972 when they bought their first Jag-uar, a 1962 E-type. They currently own a 1996 XJ6 Vanden Plas and a 2007 XK. Right now they both need gas and a wash (the cars), but the fun has never worn off. Judy has enjoyed the club and served it for many years. She was club President (2000-2001), Membership Chair for two years, and has been on the board since her presidency as Corporate Relations Director. She was co-chair of Western States in 1996 and 2010, and also co-chaired the AGM on the Queen Mary in 2004. After all that, being secre-tary seems like retirement.

On Saturday, November 10 the JOC will hold a Grand Tour of the Angeles Na-tional Forest, led by our Tour Director, Creighton Turner. The tour will start in Pasadena in the morning and drive up the Angeles Crest Highway to New-comb’s Ranch Restaurant for lunch.
Newcomb’s Ranch was founded in the 1880’s as a way station for hikers in the area, long before there was a passable road to the area, which was not built until 1929. Today the Newcomb Ranch Restaurant remains the only one on the Angeles Crest Highway.
After lunch, tourers will be provided with several options for the return trip which can lead to Highways 14, 210 or 15.
Plans for this event are still being final-ized. An email will be sent to all Mem-bers in early November with meet up location and more details. Tour master Turner promises more surprises for all who participate. save THe daTe!

He was worried about registration but the only request from DMV was a ride in the car. Ah, California. I found three E-types without chassis plates, a troubling issue. Also, despite repeated warnings to cool it, a Ferrari bashed into a Mustang less than a block away in an impromptu street race.
The Palos Verdes Concours was next on the list, held at Pebble-esque Trump Na-tional Golf Course complete with morn-ing fog for effect. Both XKs and E-types were well represented with many fine examples in each class. This year French Art Deco cars were featured providing a treat with examples from the Mullin and Nethercutt collections as well as other local owners.(Continued on page 11)

Post PebbLe Probing by Paul Mcnabb
Hard to believe but the 2012 schedule of automobile events is rapidly winding to a close as the holidays approach. I at-tended three events in September in an effort to ward off the inevitable.
SuperCar Sunday: I received the call out from Kevin Easton: Bring Lucille to this event! Brit cars featured this weekend. Okay, I’m game. The event took place at the Westfield Promenade Mall in Thou-sand Oaks. Finding the exact location of the event was easy because as I exited the Ventura Freeway a Lamborghini and Ford Cobra Coupe replica blasted past but got stuck at a light. I managed to keep up the last few blocks to the event. The large parking lot was already packed when I was directed into the special rows
reserved for British cars. Ten or eleven E-types were on display. Three particularly caught my interest.First was a dark blue OTS owned by Hen-ry Moukolan. Listing the chassis number or year is impossible because the car was constructed from a ’69 monocoque fitted to a SIII 2+2 project car found in Chicago. Add a highly customized ’90 V12 bored out to 5.7 liters and fitted with downdraft Webers and a 6 speed gearbox and one has a fast, strange E-type. Chassis 888358, a lightweight rep-lica showing lustrous gun metal grey paint, looked to be the ultimate rally car. The upgrades were too numerous to list but I encourage readers to look up the car on www.xkedata.com for the details. Finally, something didn’t quite look right about a BRG SII coupe until I realized it was RHD. The owner was a young Brit who had owned the car for a few years in his native London and when a job trans-fer brought him to LA, the car came too.

AccORding tO LuciELLE (continued from page 10)Another notice beckoned from Irvine Cars & Coffee the Saturday Brit cars were again featured.I headed out at 4:30 am, driving Lucille again, and arrived at 6:30, this time following a bathtub Porsche that cut me off at the exit to HW 5. The lot at the design school was already half full but an interesting E-type pulled next door. Bob Faster, a retired police officer, recently inherited his father’s 69 SII OTS. His father, Ronald, purchased 1R10195, again entered on xkedata.com, in 1974 while living in Pennsylvania. His wife noticed an ad in the Erie Times. Just as he began his inspection of the car another potential buyer showed up and asked if the car was still for sale. He said it was already sold, even though he hadn’t even had a chance to test drive the car. Bob took his future wife, Julie, on some unap-proved rides during high school and the Jag participated in their wedding in 1981. The E-type showed 12,000 miles when his father purchased the car and showed only 28,000 miles when shipped to Bob shortly before his father passed away in Florida last month. Bob promised me he is going to drive the remarkably original and unmolested car in local events, hope-fully joining Lucille in the near future.* * *McNabb facebook cell 805 263 3836 [email protected]

SACRAMENTO JAGUAR CLUB PROJECT III 1958 XK 150 DHC
This book describes a two year complete restoration of an XK 150 DHC by members of the Sacramento Jaguar Club. It is rich-ly illustrated with many color pictures and describes several modifications to improve drivability. The story begins with the chance meeting of two Jaguar enthusiasts who quickly envisioned the project. There are 24 monthly reports which describe everything from initial evaluation and disassembly to final restoration and delivery to its owner. This is more of a group project history, as opposed a restoration guide.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL TIME
ALERT: NEW DUES STRUCTURE
Now is the time to renew your household membership in the JOC for 2013. The JOC now has a two-tier membership dues structure for renewing your membership. The amount of your dues depends on whether you want to receive the JOC newsletter, Jaguar Tales, via email only or via the US Postal Service mail. The annual dues amount for the newsletter email-only digital edition is only $60. The annual dues amount for the newsletter USPS mail paper edition is now $80.
Also note that the number of newsletters is being reduced from 12 per year to 10 per year in order to keep the dues amount near to the amount in previous years ($70) and to offset JCNA’s recent $8 increase to their annual dues (JCNA increased their annual dues to $30 from the previous $22).
PLEASE NOTE: If your membership information is unchanged, the only information to record on this form is your name and address and the dues amount depending on whether you receive the email or USPS mail edition of the club’s newsletter. However, if any of your information changed during the year, please record the change on the form.
Your check for the dues, along with the form on the reverse side is to be made payable to the Jaguar Owners Club, Inc. mailed to:
Gerry Willburn
5073 Melbourne Drive
Cypress, CA 90630.
The dues payment must be received by January 25, 2013 in order for a member to maintain current membership status. Members who have not timely paid their dues will be dropped from the membership roster. The January 25, 2013 cutoff is required in order to have the JCNA portion of the dues in the JCNA hands by February 15, 2013, deadline
Your promptness in paying your dues will be greatly appreciated and thank you for renewing your membership in JOC.
