Hello and welcome to the June edition of Inside Shoreham. The last few months have gone so quickly and we are into the

month of June. June was actually named at the Roman Goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter. It is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest daylight hours in the Southern Hemisphere. Did you know that the Month is also known as the rose or honey suckle month since this is when we see these gorgeous flowers in bloom. As well as that, June is known for its large number of marriages. This dates back to when Juno, the Goddess of Marriage, married couples, hence it is known as being a lucky month for marrying.

On the 21st of this month we see the first day of summer and I hope that it is going to be the start of a fabulous summer holidays.

We have some more great articles for you this month. From our Local Support Police Officers to Judy’s Upton’s article on Canals and Locks. I have also included in this month a piece by Shoreham Library on its Summer Read challenge. You can read all about it on page 6. What a great way to get kids reading for pleasure. There are many others to read and see what is happing locally.

Until July, I wish you all a wonderful June. Please do send in local articles and events. We will try to fit them in.

Kind regards, Angela

On Sunday 10 May, Adur Petanque Club held a "Come and Try Day" on

their home terrain at Lancing Manor Park (Impulse Leisure Centre). Interest was shown from the start, of what turned out to be a very successful event. Over 20 very enthusiastic

members of the public attended on a sunny day to 'See what it was all about'.

Club and Committee Members encouraged the first timers to play in this family orientated sport.

Including a visitor from far away

Canada. The Club operates a continuing "Come and Try" policy throughout the year, so if you want to learn how to play the French at their own game then contact diana or albert Hollis on 01903-776387 or visit www.adurpetanque.co.uk

WeSt SuSSex LibrarieS are gearing up for a fantastical adventure this summer holiday. This year’s Summer

Reading Challenge – QUEST SEEKERS takes young readers on a magical journey to an extraordinary land where they can discover the joy of books.

Last year over 10,000 children in and around West Sussex took part in the Team Read sporting challenge enjoying books and activities throughout the summer holidays.

This year’s theme QUEST SEEKERS will again provide fun and excitement. Children will join Cadmus the gatekeeper and his young questers on a challenge to bring back the golden book. There are three stages to their quest: Firebird Rising, Mountain Mission and Dragon’s Lair.

Children 4 – 12 years are invited to join the QUEST SEEKERS challenge in all West Sussex Libraries FREE of charge. All they need to do is join the library and then register as a Quester.

The challenge is simple – read six books and enjoy

activities during the summer holidays, through your local library. Along the way, children will collect a QUEST SEEKERS membership card and poster plus exciting stickers including some ‘scratch & sniff’. Those who successfully finish the challenge will receive a certificate and medal.

The QUEST SEEKERS challenge will begin in all West Sussex Libraries on Monday 13th July continuing until September. Check out activities that will take place in many of our libraries during the holidays. Contact your local library for further details.

2009 SeemS tO be speeding along and we are now entering June

already. Let us hope the weather will be kind for Beach Dreams weekend on the 13th and 14th June.

Children like adventure, we know that, but here in Adur, Sussex Police are concerned about the growing number of young people seen to be climbing onto the roof tops of buildings. This is an extremely dangerous and illegal pass time and is to be strongly discouraged.

Very recently in another part of the country, a young lad climbed onto a derelict building to retrieve his football. He fell through the asbestos roofing straight into a tank of acid that had been left there. Luckily he was rescued, but not before suffering terrible burns to his face and body.

A lot of old derelict buildings may have asbestos on site, used in the manufacture of corrugated roofing. It was not designed to hold weight. Asbestos is dangerous to health if fibres are inhaled, and must be expertly handled.

A roofer of many years experience advises there is always an element of danger in his work. Even now, after many years, he would never attempt to climb onto a roof without first assessing possible dangers. What looks o.k. may not be; rotten timbers, loose tiles, even a coat of paint can conceal a potential danger.

Parents, please make sure you advise your children of the dangers of climbing onto buildings, especially with the long summer school holiday nearly upon us, when they will be out and about.

All owners please make sure your premises, new and old, are well secured. You may find yourself liable for anyone involved in an accident.

If you see children climbing on buildings please report it immediately to the police, safety comes first.

WaS it mark Twain who decided that there are three kinds of

lies: lies, damned lies and statistics? It seems that modern governments increasingly base policy decisions largely on statistics.

If gathered accurately and dispassionately, statistics should detect real trends. But any trend deemed to be detrimental and government seems to pounce and often changes in law inevitably follow. Some would say traffic law is not enforced enough, mainly due to lack of Police resources. So, can un-enforced law alter trends?

When one looks at statistics relating to road safety, the findings are chillingly depressing:

*Each weekend 78 young drivers aged between 17-24 are killed or

seriously injured on the road. As a group, young male drivers are far more likely to lose their lives between 11pm and 1am on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday and they won’t be alone in the car — passengers are predictably present and usually injured or worse!• 550 people per annum are killed by

drunk drivers aged 17-29.• Drivers aged 17-25 make up only

10% of the driving population, however they are involved in 25% of all serious road crashes.

• Under the New Drivers legislation around 900–1300 drivers are disqualified each month but only about 600-800 lawfully reclaim their licences after successful retesting. Many of the remainder, it is feared, simply don’t bother! By now over 2500 individuals are more than probably driving illegally — without licences or insurance cover!

• Between 1995 and 2005 the number of vehicles on our road system increased by 28%, by 2025 it could reach 40% on current volumes! Gridlock looks inevitable!

Most statistics focus on younger drivers, but if 25% of all serious crashes involve this group, logically the remaining 75% involve the 30+ age groups — and there are many more of them! It’s a shame that so much attention is focused on the younger driver but the statistics do speak volumes. Overall though, deteriorating driver attitude, particularly among the group whose work depends on driving, continues to threaten lives and livelihoods across the spectrum of all road users. Professional driving agencies deplore the antics of selfish drivers and press the Government to stimulate further development in driver skill and changes in attitude but how many of us would baulk at more nanny-state interference? The sad fact is few drivers believe they even need to improve!

So, is it about time to reconsider our whole approach to driving?

What these statistics are showing is that every UK driver should wake up and acknowledge the likelihood of being involved in a serious collision: actually it is now a 1 in 200 chance! So, with companies like Swinton, the insurance brokers, regarding 6 points on a licence as “standard” and with 6 million licence holders having amassed at least 6 points, we owe it to ourselves to actively improve not just our skills

but more so our attitude to the whole business of keeping safe on the road!

It is clear that those with full licences do very little to develop driving skills further having passing the driving test. Just think for a moment, how much things have changed on our roads since you passed? Add to this the rising costs of motoring: high depreciation; petrol & diesel prices taxed to the hilt and climbing; developments in graduated road tax; parking & fines; test fees, finance charges and insurance premiums – they’re all under pressure! If that’s not depressing enough think what all the stress of driving has to personal health. We are apparently 14 times more likely to suffer stroke within two hours of an anger outburst. Stress is linked with depression, obesity and a weakened immune system.

So with all this bad news — is it not time right now to take more personal responsibility to improve our chances of avoiding stress and the threat of collision?

Future provisional licence holders will be faced with ever more stringent driving tests and possibly prevented from taking them before the age of 18. Government has a raft of new ideas that may restrict the use of certain types of vehicles to new drivers in the first two years post-test.

So, if these probabilities materialise, surely the onus lies on established drivers themselves to set a better example by being seen to improve their attitude and skills as the age and road conditions change. It is never too late to re-appraise your current driving competency or maybe even consider investigating advanced driving courses — many decline that notion fearing the prospect of having to take an advanced test. Local Approved Driving Instructors offer courses that don’t have to lead onto a qualification unless the driver wants it to! Surely the point is not fearing a test but improving your skill!

There are no current statistics to suggest that a perfect driver has ever existed. So, if anyone ever claims to be such — well, that’s probably a lie and maybe even a damned lie!

Take full responsibility for your own driving and be better prepared for others to make mistakes!Tony Wallington is an Approved Driving Instructor and Member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists who practises locally.

Starring roSiE aSHE, FENtoN gray, darrEN bENNEtt and barry Clark. directors: SiMoN gray & CarolE toddJuly 14th – 19th 2009

FOLLOWing On FrOm the huge sell-out success of The Pirates of Penzance last summer, MT2000 are proud

to return to the Barn Theatre in Southwick, West Sussex, with THE MIKADO, arguably one of the most popular of the Gilbert & Sullivan operas, having stood the test of time since 1885. G&S transport us to the fictitious Japanese town of Titipu, where flirting is punishable by death, and the hilarious tale of love, corruption in local government, marriage, executions and heroics!

MT2000’s production will feature West End stars ROSIE ASHE as Katisha and FENTON GRAY as Koko. Rosie Ashe has appeared with all the national opera companies as well as in many West End musicals. She was the original Carlotta in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and more recently created the role of Miss Andrew in Mary Poppins. Fenton Gray has appeared in many West End musicals but has made Koko one of his trademark roles having performed the role with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, on BBC TV and, more recently, with the Carl Rosa Opera Company in the West End, on National Tour and on a coast to coast tour across the USA playing in all the major cities. Seasoned member of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and the Carl Rosa Opera Company, BARRY CLARK appears as Pooh Bah, with the star of many major touring and West End musicals DARREN BENNETT as Nanki Poo. Also featuring are Karen Orchin, Jodie Spencer and Kate Stoner as the “Three Little Maids” plus full supporting cast and orchestra.

Directed by SIMON GRAY and international choreographer/director CAROLE TODD (who has previously choreographed The Mikado for The D’Oyly Carte and for the Australian Opera), this production promises to be the musical highlight of the season.

Tuesday 14th July to Friday 17th July performances commence at 7.30pm. Performances on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th July commence at 5.30pm and include a one-hour interval when the gardens of the theatre will be open and the audience are invited to bring picnics.

The Gala performance on Friday 17th July is followed by a Champagne reception with the cast, in aid of The Martlets Hospice.

there are many routes to finding a mortgage. But which one is the best and why? When I took my first mortgage it

seemed like a minefield and there is every temptation to cling on to the first reasonable mortgage adviser we find — whether that be at the first building society we walk into or our own bank. But hold fire. You could be making an expensive mistake. I will explain why.

the fees and rateIf you simply walk into your local high street building society, you might be lucky and stumble across the best deal but, more often than not, there will be better deals out there. Your local society will have a range of fixed and variable rate deals — and yes — they will give the best advice according to their own range but…you could end up paying a higher rate or fees that other lenders simply don’t charge.

For example, some lenders are currently offering free valuations for people purchasing a new property. This can save you money straightaway. If you are remortgaging you could have your legal costs and your valuation fee covered. You could be forking out hundreds of pounds to cover these fees if you don’t shop around.

In terms of rate, many people are currently opting for fixed rates. This is because the rates are low and people wish to secure the low rate for a period of time. You should look at the different fixed rate terms and compare them. How does a five year fixed compare to a two year fixed? Only with this knowledge and an understanding of your personal situation and budget can the best rate be found.

the lending policyDuring the credit crunch lenders have really tightened up their lending criteria. They are all very different in how they lend. Many people apply for a mortgage only to find themselves turned down later on. Sometimes this doesn’t happen straightaway. You could wait quite a time for a decision. Often it is due to a quirky piece of criteria the lender hadn’t mentioned. It is always best to check everything out upfront — if you don’t know the questions to ask you could find yourself back to square one a few weeks later.

in SummaryA good independent adviser, one who specialises in mortgages, will know the lending criteria of all the lenders out there. If your case is simple, then they will find the best deal from hundreds of products, including the high street lenders. If your case is more complex, for example if you have a buy to let in the background, they will know exactly which lenders to recommend. at talk Money we offer a free initial consultation, so why not call us for independent, friendly advice on your mortgage situation. Call me, Claire Cook, and my team on 01273 224667, we would be very happy to help.

beFOre the age of the steam engine, heavy goods had to be transported

by road or river and canal. In the 17th century Sussex roads were often near impassable tracks, unsuited to the movement of heavy goods such as timber, coal or grain. There needed to be a faster, more reliable way of getting such goods to the coastal ports such as Shoreham.

This meant utilising the River Adur, described by Joseph Priestly “as a very imperfect tideway navigation”, partly due to its tidal nature and partly the shallowness of some of its upper course. The Adur Navigation Act of 1807 allowed for the improvement of the river for barges and other craft. The area most in need of this work was between Shoreham and Bines Bridge, near Henfield where the Adur both ceases to be tidal, and also divides. Improvements were also made to the branch of the river leading to Mock Bridge near Shermanbury, where a wharf allowed barges to be loaded and unloaded at Outlands Farm.

The cost of the improvement work was levied from the surrounding landowners at the rate of two shillings per acre of land owned. Two locks were installed on the non-tidal stretch of the river, Bines Lock a mile above Bines Bridge and another at Lock Farm near Partridge Green. Betley lock was also built along the branch towards Shermanbury.

In addition to the River Adur, it was decided to excavate a short stretch of canal at a point near West Grinstead, where the Adur was less navigable. The Baybridge Canal was created by the passing of a Navigation Act in 1825, and paid for in part by local landowners and in part by the sale of the rights to collect tolls levied from its users.

Less than three and a half miles in length, and little more than a stretch of river with two locks, the Baybridge Canal ran parallel with the river Adur for part of its length, and linked to the river via a sluice gate. The Baybridge was twenty feet eight wide, and four feet deep, with two locks and crossing it. Bines Bridge had to been rebuilt to

allow for barges to pass beneath. Work on the new canal was

completed in 1926 and barges transporting manure, coal and chalk were soon using it. In 1830 historian Edmund Cartwright described the Baybridge Canal as having “added to the advantages of communications; the increased traffic of which proves its utility”. At West Grinstead wharf limekilns and coal pens were built near the main Horsham turnpike where road and water transport met.

After the opening of the railway from Shoreham to West Grinstead in 1861, usage of the Baybridge Canal soon dwindled. An act of 1875 allowed the canal to be abandoned, on the grounds that traffic using the canal was now too sparse to yield enough finance to maintain the canal and pay its shareholders. All rights of way along the canal ceased on the 1st September 1875.

Traffic on the River Adur itself however revived when the Portland Cement Works at Upper Beeding began to use the river to carry its clay from the pit at Horton to the works. The finished cement was then carried down to Shoreham harbour by barge.

At its peak in 1920, the river was carrying 22,000 tons of cement. This continued until March 1929, when the Cement Works too switched all transportation to the railway

Shoreham harbour itself had initially posed problems to navigation. With the constant drift of shingle blocking

the channel, the harbour’s mouth silted up. New entrances had to be excavated up until 1821, when the harbour’s present mouth was established at Kingston. The silted up eastern arm of Shoreham Harbour was then dredged and an entrance lock opened in 1855. This formed the Southwick Ship Canal, which led to the Aldrington basin. In 1933 the Prince George lock replaced the original entrance lock, which was converted into a dry dock.

In 1966 an additional lock, the Prince Philip was opened and became the biggest in Sussex, large enough to take ships over 4,500 tons. In the mid 19th century, Shoreham harbour was constantly busy with ships laden with coal from Hartlepool, or fruit and vegetables from the continent. Timber from the Baltic and America was also a cargo regularly shipped into Shoreham at this time. Still more coal was imported with the opening of the Brighton and Hove gas works at the harbour in 1870 and the electricity generating power station in 1897. When in 1973 the gas works was demolished, the land became used to house a grain silo, container and wine terminals.

Today along the Adur, no sign remains of West Grinstead wharf, but brick walls in the riverbank are evidence that the River Adur once had locks and was once a thriving transport route.

deCpetiOnS iS an addictive thriller which will keep you absorbed right up to the unexpected and well-executed

finale. DECEPTIONS comes to Theatre Royal Brighton for just eight performances from Monday 29 June as part of a limited national tour.

All will be revealed in this brilliantly gripping drama starring one of the country’s best-loved soap baddies, Michelle Collins. She is perhaps best known for her role as the conniving Cindy Beale in EastEnders, but has also appeared in Rock Rivals, Sunburn and the award-winning 2000 Acres of Sky. She is joined by Rupert Hill, who most recently appeared as Jamie Baldwin in Coronation Street.

Psychiatrist Julia Smythe (Michelle Collins) is starting to believe that there are no longer any interesting cases in her field of work; things appear to be no longer different when Adrian Wainwright (Rupert Hill) makes an appointment seeking another quick fix.

What results from their sessions is a battle of wills, played out in stylish and witty banter, as each of them tries to take charge of the situation. As secrets are revealed a psychological game of cat and mouse begins, taking them both on a journey that threatens to spiral beyond their control. Who will gain the upper hand? It’s all in the mind…

DECEPTIONS is written by Paul Wheeler, is directed by Joe Harmston, with design by Simon Scullion, lighting by Ben Cracknell and Sound design by Marcus Christensen. DECEPTIONS is produced by Ian Fricker whose most recent credits include A Song at Twilight, The Hound of the Baskervilles and Blues Brothers. box office 08700 606 650 (bkg fee) groups Hotline 08700 602 516access bookings 0844 871 7677 (bkg fee)tickets £11 - £25 www.ambassadortickets.com/brighton
