newsDigital Print UK: CancelledThe organisers of the Digital Print UK exhibition have announced that they will not be running the event this year, following the decision by several major brands not to exhibit.Rudi Blackett, Event Director, said: ‘’Our intention for Digital Print UK was always to make the exhibition a successful buying and lead generation event similar to Sign & Digital UK, but unfortunately in the current climate a number of major suppliers in commercial

digital print have decided to concentrate their focus and budgets on other routes to market at this time.

This is borne out by some of the leading companies in the industry deciding not to exhibit at print events. This is particularly disappointing as we had a broad spectrum of exhibitors confi rmed for the exhibition.

We will continue to monitor the market in the future to see if the opportunity arises to

run an event for that market sector. In the meantime we will be focusing on our growing portfolio of events in the market sectors we currently serve.’’

Colorworld Imaging Continues as an Offi cial MPA Trade PartnerThe Master Photographers Association has confi rmed a continued Trade Partnership with Colorworld Imaging.

Trade Partnerships are an initiative introduced last year by the Association due to a need in the photo industry for companies to work more closely with their suppliers to add greater benefi ts all round.

Alex Brydon, Colorworld’s managing director said: “Colorworld Imaging is delighted

to be continuing to support the MPA and its members as we work extremely hard to provide high standards in the industry and this is echoed in the philosophy of the Association“

Chief Executive of the MPA, Colin Buck added: “We are delighted that Colorworld sees the potential to continue to work closely with our members. As an organisation dealing with professionals it is important that we work with suppliers at the

top of their fi eld and Colorworld is a well respected established pro lab.”

Fuji Ups Ink ProductionFujifi lm has announced the opening of its brand new digital ink manufacturing facility at its manufacturing plant in Broadstairs. The company’s investment in this state-of-the-art facility, alongside an upgrade to its R&D department, highlights Fujifi lm’s long term commitment to the wide format digital sector.

The new digital ink manufacturing facility has been two years in planning and development. It has a footprint of 1800m2, and is built to accommodate a projected annual increase of 56% in the

production of UV ink at the site, manufactured in a range of batch sizes of up to 4000 litres. The facility has the capacity to manufacture 6000 tonnes of ink

per year.Over 340

employees work at the Fujifi lm Broadstairs site and over 80% of these are involved in digital ink R&D and

manufacture. It was of utmost importance that the workforce should be included as much as possible in the company’s plans, resulting in over 80 employee ideas being used in the fi nal design of the facility. www.fujifi lm.co.uk

Ilford to Distribute Kodak Proofi ng MediaFrom now on, Ilford will be the distributors of the full range of Kodak Matchprint Inkjet Proofi ng Media worldwide. Ilford, who are based in Switzerland, now offer one of the widest selections of optimised media in the graphic arts industry including products which meet international colour standards such as FOGRA, SWOP, and GRACoL.The media from Switzerland, Germany, and North America.

Paul Willems, CEO commented: “Throughout the

history of our company, Ilford has been proud to provide customers with media that meets the highest demands for quality, consistency and performance. Obtaining the distribution license for the Kodak Proofi ng Media is an exciting move for us, as we are now able to meet these demands at the prepress stage of printing.”

Kodak Matchprint media ranges from 240gsm to 120gsm including some double sided papers.

Epson Goes Back to SchoolThe University of Huddersfi eld has taken on four new Epson large-format aqueous inkjet printers to keep up with increasing demand within the School of Art, Design and Architecture.

Explains George Stewart, IT Technician, School of Art, Design and Architecture Print Bureau: “We were already using Epson printers to print students’ course and degree show work. The printers were performing well and were easy to operate but we had to look at investing in more technology. Epson is a brand we trust and we had been very impressed with the printers’ reliability and cost-effectiveness.”

The School invested in two Epson Stylus Pro 7890 24-inch printers, one Epson Stylus Pro 7900 24-inch and an Epson Stylus Pro 9890 44-inch printer.

Martin Johns, market development manager, proGraphics, Epson, says: “It’s good to see the students and staff at the university using the Epson Stylus Pro range of printers across a wide variety of media and applications. Not only do the printers offer fi rst class colour and mono reproduction but they also represent a big boost in productivity and remain cost-effective.”

Océ Arizona 360GT Brings a Splash of Colour to Beaulieu AttractionOcé, part of the Canon Group, has been part of A3M Designs Ltd’s work to enhance the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu. The Hampshire-based printer used its Océ Arizona 360GT to decorate one of the more popular children’s attractions at the museum

Eight specially-printed, profi le cut, di-bond graphics featuring cartoon characters and cars add a splash of colour to the surrounds of the children’s pedal car track.

The 3-millimetre thick boards are proving popular with the young motorists, who have to navigate road junctions and traffi c lights as part of the fun at

the popular New Forest attraction.

A3M Designs is run by husband and wife team Linda and Ken Green in Farlington, near Portsmouth. The project was printed by the company using one of the world’s leading wide-format inkjet fl atbed printers, the Océ Arizona 360GT, a machine capable of printing to virtually any substrate up to 48mm thick.

Bridget Slevin, Head of Beaulieu Graphics Dept, comments: “These boards around the pedal car track have

to withstand plenty of wear and tear so the ink has to be robust and tough and suitable for all kinds of outdoor weather. We’ve been delighted with the results. Ken’s very helpful and now he’s got the Océ Arizona there’s a lot more scope for future projects.”

A Traditional Touch

A black and white fi ne printing Masterclass with internationally renowned photographer and printer Tim Rudman wil take place 6th-7th July at Leeds College of Art.

This practical workshop will explore intermediate and more advanced practical darkroom controls, with an informal mixture of theory, demonstration, hands-on practice with supervision and group discussion supported by handouts.

Tim Rudman is an internationally renowned photographer-printer, who works exclusively with fi lm and silver gelatine papers. His name is inextricably linked with the monochrome darkroom and in particular with the processes of toning and lith printing, in which he is regarded as the leading authority. His books on these processes are treasured around the world and are held largely responsible for the current popularity of these processes.

Digital Print Innovations - H60With the forecasted growth of digital textile within the UK, DPI are using the show for the UK launch of the innovative New MTEX1800, the smaller 1.8m wide brother of the successful MTEX3200 3.2m wide complete direct to textile/fi xation solution for the Sign and Display market.

DPI will also be showcasing the latest in wide and grand format UV print technology with numerous samples from Novus Imaging, the Synergia H a New production true greyscale 3.2m hybrid printer (180m2/h), the Jetrix range including the Jetrix 2513FRQ (installed at DPI’s Centre in Derby), the Jetrix 1212 and the Winjet Colour range using Memjet Technology.

AG/CAD - AG/CAD has moved into wide-format printer sales and will launch the Dyss Apollo Hybrid GH2200 machine at Sign & Digital UK

Adding printers in addition to the Dyss X7 digital cutters that it already sold alongside its KaseMake software enables the fi rm to offer a complete print and cut system to customers.

The Apollo GH2200 uses 16 Ricoh Gen4 printheads offering CMYK light cyan and light magenta, white and clear inks. The range includes both hybrid and fl atbed machines in widths from 1.6m to 2.6m-wide and is available with between eight and 24 printheads with a maximum throughput of 110sqm per hour.

Version 10 of the KaseMake software includes a news IN3D store visualiser feature to enable clients to see a representation of their packages and displays units in-situ. Other new features include additions to the library of 3D design templates for packaging and display units, in particular more free-standing display units and

templates optimised for honeycomb boards such as Hexacomb and Re-board.

ULTIMA DISPLAYS - E60Ultima Displays will have a brand new stand to show off! The trade supplier will be showcasing a selection of their latest lines they have recently launched including iPad holders, wide format banners and hop-ups.

They will also feature some of their best selling ‘Essential’ products to include banners, fl ags and accessories plus more. Coherent Inc, M10.Indoor signs are often produced by cutting out small letters or other shapes from acrylic sheets, and then affi xing these cut pieces to a sign board with adhesive. Unfortunately, the traditional mechanical methods for performing this cutting have some drawbacks. But now, a new generation of CO2 laser based machining systems delivers the desired cost and quality characteristics to make them an attractive alternative for many sign makers.

The CO2 laser is in many ways an ideal tool for acrylic cutting. Its infrared output is strongly absorbed by acrylics (even those which appear transparent), enabling it to rapidly cut by essentially melting and vaporising away material.

disadvantages of both mechanical and water jet processes. First, laser processing can deliver a variety of cut edge fi nishes, including a smooth, transparent edge which entirely eliminates any post processing. Also, laser cutting is substantially faster than other methods, especially when the time required for other post processing steps is included. Moreover, the focused laser beam produces a very narrow cut width, allowing the production of very sharp edges and angles, and fi ne features.

Practical Laser SystemsThe Coherent OMNIbeam laser machining centre exemplifi es the newest breed of automated tools for laser cutting of plastics (and even thin metals). Several models are available utilising different Coherent Diamond series CO2 lasers in the 150 W to 400 W range, with higher powers translating directly into faster cutting speeds (over 50 meters/minute at 400 W). The cutting bed of the OMNIbeam can accept material sheets of up to 1.2 m x 1.2 m, and can process acrylic sheets of up to 25 mm in thickness.

GPTGPT will be showing the brand new GPT190s super-fast solvent printer, adapted by GPT to print high quality SA Vinyl at 24 sqmph and high quality banner at 38 sqmph, with faster modes in development. The GPT 190S incorporates double

print heads to deliver the additional speed and quality. Heavy duty roll feed, bulk ink system and a trough for typically unbacked mesh, are offered as optional extras to further enhance the offering.

Also on the stand will be the latest Mimaki JV400 160LX 1.6m latex printer running full speed. Another new printer on the stand from Mimaki will be the UJF6042. An A2 LED UV cure fl atbed printer, a larger version of the current UJF3042HG but with higher 1800dpi quality print (upto 150mm deep) alongside, will be its smaller brother, the UJF3042FX.

From Roland will be the desktop print & cut BN-20 VersaSTUDIO and desktop LEF-12 UV Printers, Print & Cut machines in the VersaCAMM VS and SPi ranges and the new SOLJET Pro 4 XR-640 and the VersaUV Print & Cut machine. There will also be examples from the Mutoh ValueJet range.

Making its debut appearance will be the new RX Series of vinyl cutters from GCC, available in four sizes, 61cm, 101cm, 132cm, and 183cm these plotters have advanced AASII contour cutting, multiple pressure pinch rollers for different medias and an auto cut-off feature.

Redefi ning Consumer SpaceDarren Johnson, Regional Business Manager and Vice President, Retail Systems Solutions, Kodak presents his overview of the key trends affecting retail across Western Europe and their future implications

If retail had only to overcome the latest European economic crisis, then it would be in better shape. Not to minimise the situation of many countries, far from it, but it remains the case that retail has lived through many recessions and emerged each time blinking and dazed but reborn as a

healthy place for businesses to thrive. Winners and losers perhaps with some inevitable industry consolidation, but fundamentally a similar structure as ever there was. So what’s different this time?

A congruence of factors has developed over recent years and now reached a tipping point in many countries. Currently there are more than forty thousand vacant shops in the UK, with a number of big-name casualties recently.The era of retailing that has been a staple for so many decades in Western European countries is undergoing a seismic shift in its structure, the way it markets products, transparency, pricing strategies, logistics, R&D, the delivery of experiences and customer engagement. Brands, retailers, channel partners and service providers alike must work together to redefi ne this space. For the winners untold riches, for the unprepared a painful demise.

Like so many, I shop online from my computer and from my phone. Smartphone shopping will soon be ubiquitous. Technology which was a barrier for so long is fast disappearing as an issue – the trickle of data became a stream and now a

fl ood. The movement from 3G to 4G, from copper cable to fi bre optic, from wired to wireless. In a few short years consumer space has increased by orders of magnitude to the multi-millions of touchpoints we see today. And it keeps growing. Does anyone really think it will slow down? “Buy anything from anywhere” will be the tagline for 21st century retail.

Moore’s Law still holds fi rm for processing power, however much retail infrastructure may lag behind. The pace of change will quicken, not slow as we move towards 2020 and beyond. The implications of the technological leaps are huge and go well beyond mobility. If prices are not already transparent across retailers, they soon will be. And this transparency is all consuming – with social networks in their widest form nothing is hidden for long, from company ethics to product quality to customer complaints.

The balance of power is shifting to consumers. The astounding growth of low cost information sharing means they now market to each other - through product ratings, discussion forums, Facebook groups, EWOM, blogs, the list goes on. Who do you trust most for buying advice? Who would buy a one star app? Answers to both questions are now defi ned by the impact of low cost information sharing and consumer power. To quote Jakeman (CEO Activision) “The irony is that while there have never been more ways to reach consumers, it’s never been harder to connect with consumers.” The way the industry approaches marketing is clearly changing too, but nowhere near fast enough. Globalisation may have made the world smaller, but in this matrix it’s the local

voice that resonates best. The potential to truly engage with our consumers in a way that was simply impossible fi ve years ago appears within reach. Get it right and you would have reached marketing nirvana, get it wrong and the feedback can be visceral, raw and not for the fainthearted.

Surrounded by this maelstrom of development sits retail. Searching for the right participation strategy, the right balance across the channels. What will be the purpose of retail space into the next decade, how quickly will things change? How can I best engage? One thing is for sure, the strategies of the past are as outdated as the

standalone shop. An omni-channel strategy is required which not only embraces, but sets the future. Shopping destination habits cannot be relied upon - to expect a shopper to visit a store to buy the same product as available through a host of potentially more convenient portals is a fl awed approach. A participation strategy for online, mobile, tablet, net to retail is no longer optional, it’s table stakes. The store becomes the real world extension of your digital presence, but a digital presence you must have, correctly formatted and seamless across channels. And

what’s the role of the store to become? Retail needs to provide a compelling reason for people to visit that goes beyond being a collection point or stacking and selling products. Experience will be the new currency for retail stores.

Whilst the situation for retail may seem daunting and already there have been many abortive attempts by retailers, manufacturers and brands alike to embrace the new world, the mist is lifting and successful strategies for retail space, channel participation, consumer engagement and many other elements are emerging.

Change of this kind brings the opportunity to

leapfrog the competition, to develop customer loyalty like never before, to increase brand awareness, clinically target marketing and use brand ambassadors to spread the word. To create ecosystems that drive loyalty and repeat purchase and to change brand perception.

Although it faces its own challenges, the photo market is well placed to thrive as retail changes. Pictures have an emotional weight that sets them apart – their power has extended to become the social currency. The opportunity to tap into the zeitgeist of the new world is huge.

Canon has announced a refresh of its PIXMA MX printer range with the launch of four new All-In-One devices. The PIXMA MX395, MX455, MX525 and MX925 feature print, copy, scan, fax and ADF functionality.

Designed to improve productivity for home offi ce users, the PIXMA MX925 comes with new double front paper cassettes that hold up to 250 sheets of plain paper and up to 20 sheets of photo paper. Print speeds for the PIXMA MX925 have been increased compared to the previous model, with A4 documents being produced as fast as 10ipm in colour and 15ipm in mono.

Scanning and copying multi-page documents is quick and easy with a fully-integrated 30-sheet Automatic Document Feeder available on the MX395, MX455 and MX525 printers, whilst the MX925 features a productive 35-sheet ADF.

The MX525 and MX925 printers help users to save paper and produce professional-looking documents fast with double-sided printing.

These models also feature a large colour display which provides direct access to cloud services while the Dual Function Panel makes it easy to print, copy, scan and fax directly from the printer.

Traditional printing and engraving suffers two fatal fl aws; printing photo-quality images is near impossible and, in order to engrave a sign, the surface material needs to be soft and is therefore susceptible to damage and wear. As part of their revolutionary new service, Meface has both bases covered in what is being hailed as the most important development in signage and nameplate printing for a decade.

Using the unique process of anodised aluminium printing, the company is able to transfer high-defi nition imagery directly onto a surface that is almost indestructible and resistant to weather, temperatures, fi re and vandalism.

“Anodised Aluminium has a protective aluminium oxide layer added using electrolysis. This process forms a hard anodised layer of aluminium which offers superior heat, chemical and abrasion resistance. The anodised layer will accept pigments, integrating the graphics into the surface creating a superior nameplate or sign,” says Victoria Titova, the company’s Creative Director, “Photo quality images and graphics can then be printed into the unsealed oxide layer using colour dyes via special anodised aluminium printer. The printing pores are then closed in a fi xation process, protecting the dyes from outside infl uences.”

Aside from its immediate benefi ts, the fi nal product is also fully-protected from mechanical abrasion (scratches), solvents and even graffi ti – with foreign colour easily wiped off using any store-bought paint thinner. Free samples are currently available to interested parties.

A REVOLUTION IN ALUMINIUM PRINTING KENRO OFFERS NEW SPACE-SAVING SOLUTIONS FOR RETAILERS

So, you’ve just wrapped up your fi nancial year... how’s business?It’s been our best year yet in terms of growth, innovation and leadership in the digital labels market. We’ve basically grown from a small screen print outfi t into one of the most successful family owned digital label printers in Europe.

How have you managed that, then?We’ve been very bold by investing in innovative equipment, introducing fresh ways of working and not being afraid of getting stuck into forward-thinking technologies. There are various challenges with digital print and our knowledge means we are able to specify quality solutions for our customers. We also have a strong commitment to continuing professional development, maintaining a high level of digital print skills within the business.

What real-term changes have been made?We’ve increased our offi ce space by 100%, and

our printing capacity by 50%. We’ve created six jobs in digital printing, digital fi nishing, graphic design, and sales support roles. We’ve invested heavily in equipment, including a Third Xeikon digital label press (wide format) – now we have fi ve presses altogether - and new equipment to manufacture peel and reveal labels in-house.

We’ve introduced Color Logic special effects, to enable metallic printing, selected by customers to make their brand really stand out and reduce cost of foil blocking, and we’ve also improved our business facilities such as our board room and offi ce spaces.

What are the next steps for the business?We’ll be making further investment into digital fi nishing equipment, further recruitment and resource investment into marketing. The next item on our list will be a 500mm wide Grafi sk Maskinfabrik fi nishing press. Watch this space!
