From the Director

As May has come and gone, we have witnessed and participated in a plethora of 50th Anniversary events. Participants included current and former students, families and employees, as well as local community members.

There were a good number of attendees currently not living in the locality who made a special journey to participate. This included visitors from: France, The Netherlands, Malaysia, Venezuela, Vietnam, U.K. and the U.S. (including representation from Texas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Nebraska & Washington).

We had nearly 80 people join us for dinner at Flor & Fjære, and whilst the boat ride out was a little choppy, the garden was so well designed, providing shelter. The plants, shrubs and trees were outstanding as was the food and company.

For our family day anniversary activities at school there were nearly 500 people present, taking part in activities, witnessing the community choir, enjoying the BBQ and Ice-cream Sundaes and bus tour to previous locations of ISS and SAMS.

Over 150 of us then made it to the evening reception at the Red Sea Houses with nearly 70 getting up bright and early on the Sunday morning for the Preikestolen hike.

On Monday morning 40 golfers and I participated in the golf tournament at the Stavanger golf club. The sun shone on us throughout all of these events as they did during the children´s parade on 17th May and whilst nothing would

From the DirectorField Days, or inside at one of the upcoming assemblies; you are very welcome - there is much to see and experience. We also annually extend a very warm welcome to anyone who wishes to attend our Baccalaureate ceremony, (Wednesday, June 8 at 18:00 here at ISS), and Graduation ceremony (Thursday, June 9, at 19:30, also at ISS). As mentioned, one of the very special events that marks the end of each school year is the Graduation ceremony for the members of our senior class. In our 50th year, we have two commencement speakers from the University of Bath in the UK. There are a few reasons why it is particularly fitting that Dr. Mary Hayden and Professor Jeff Thomson CBE will speak at our graduation this year. Firstly, The University of Bath is also celebrating its 50th Anniversary and secondly, the University of Bath has been regarded over the years as one of the leaders of research into international education and international schools. Both Mary and Jeff are widely regarded as the two individuals who are truly leaders in the field. We are very honoured that they have both agreed to speak at our graduation this year. In the final edition of The Informer for this year, I would also like to extend my thanks to our phenomenal ISS Parent Association. They do so much to support and augment our efforts here at the school and I am very grateful to them. I would also like to make a special mention to Mary Patrickson, our outgoing PA president, for all her work with the PA, and wish Karla Shinners all the very best as incoming president.

As our annual thank you back to the Parent Association, once again the leadership team invited both the old and new Parent Association Boards to breakfast on May 25. In a school that prospers throughout the year by countless acts of generous volunteering by a huge number of parents, how best can the administration thank each individual? We like to turn the tables and serve the parents, instead of us always watching the reverse in action. This breakfast is a symbolic way for us to extend our appreciation to each of these individuals and, in a wider sense, to all the parents in the school who give of their time throughout the school year. Thank you from all of us here at ISS; you are truly appreciated. On a practical note, are you aware that if your child is leaving the school—either moving or graduating--we are happy to refund any unused funds from your school lunch account. To do this, our Business Office must have your bank account number. Our assumption is that anyone who is returning to ISS in August does not have a problem in leaving unused funds in their lunch account where they can again access them in August with the new year starting up. If our assumption is incorrect and you would like the money refunded now in June, that is fine—just communicate that information to our Finance Manager, Linn Åsheim, and give her a bank account number where the funds can be transferred. Any questions? Just check with either Linn Åsheim or Anne Brit Winters in the front office, and they will be able to assist you.

This is also the issue of the Informer where we pay tribute to our ISS employees who will be ending their employment with the school in June. The foundation of the institution is based on the skill of the people who work with your children on a daily basis. We are privileged to bring people to work at the school from a range of backgrounds and geographical origins. When they leave us, they leave an indelible, positive impression on the school and we thank them for sharing their time and their talents with us.

Additionally, at the recent end of year gathering for the school employees, the following returning individuals were lauded for their long service to the school: 5 Years: Anne Armstrong, Andrea Horstmann, Daniel Jozkow & Trond Hellebust10 Years: Matthew Armstrong, Rachel Gilbert, Lena Jordheim & Hanne Moen15 Years: Megan Medaas, Daisy Joa, Susana Umerovski20 Years: Veronica Cosgriff, Lizzie Bannister, Heather Melhus, Carol Wallace25 Years: Joyce Selvakumar

Congratulations, and a sincere thank you to these individuals for their years of service to the school. The office will be open on a reduced schedule throughout the summer. Many think that once school is over for the year that we lock the doors and don’t open them again until August. In reality, the school is a busy place throughout the summer. Many “behind the scenes” activities preparing the school for August take place. The school will be open from 08:30 to 14:30 every Monday through Friday. We continue to process new admissions all summer so if you know someone considering sending their children to ISS, by all means encourage them to send an e-mail to “[email protected].” Finally to the Class of 2016 – Congratulations! We wish you well in your future endeavours. Also, to each of the members of our school community, who may be reading this and are planning a move to a different school and a different country, go with our best wishes and our request that you keep in touch with us here at ISS. Whether your stay was a long or a short one, you have enriched our school community and your touch will have an impact on this school forever. If at all possible, please come back and visit us at sometime in the future. Stavanger is a town that seems to have a permanent hold on all those who spend time here and you will always be welcome back for a visit!

Have a wonderful summer and for those of you who are returning, and also for our new families, we look forward to seeing you in August! With kind regards

News from the IBDP/IGCSe CoordinatorSome personal thoughts for the graduating class and others

What can one write for the last Informer of the year?

Just before the long summer break is not the best time to be giving information and encouragement – IBDP and IGCSE examinations are over, and now it is a waiting game.

For the IBDP students, results are released on 6th July and for IGCSE students the key date is 12th August.

But is it too late to give advice to the graduates?

Looking for inspiration, I came across a speech given by John Bader, Chief External Academic Relations Officer at the IB, to the graduating class of the International School of Paris in May 2015. The speech is summarised on the IB blog: http://blogs.ibo.org/blog/2015/06/02/six-ideas-for-success-for-ib-diploma-graduates/

His first key message is that “Life is long” and that young people have a mass of time ahead of them – a fact which can be difficult to grasp in the race to get qualifications, find a life partner, start a career etc.

As our graduating class begins to slow down after the hectic final year of school with its apparently never-ending series of deadlines and the stress of examinations, I hope they get chance to stop and reflect on what is important to them and consider what they really want out of life. There is time to explore possibilities, time to make mistakes, time to choose a new path, and time just to live in the moment. I would endorse John Bader’s message, however I think life looks a lot longer as you look forward through the years rather than backwards.

The 50th anniversary here at ISS gave me the opportunity to re-connect with students who graduated nearly 25 years ago, in my first year teaching at ISS. I remember vividly the first time I met these young adults as they came into my 12th grade Biology class in that August day, years before the current graduating class were born. To me it seems almost like yesterday – to the current graduates, it is more than a lifetime. School is important, of course, and grades can be the key that helps open future educational possibilities – but if things do not go according to plan, there is still plenty of time to take an alternate route and things will work out.

I look forward to meeting our Class of 2016 at the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of ISS to find out just what paths they have taken. Returning to John Bader’s speech, he closed with the message that “You will find the greatest joy in serving others”. Whatever our graduates choose to do with their lives, I hope that they remember the lessons that we have tried to instil at ISS. Here I am not talking about the academic subjects, important though they are, but the values that we express in our vision to “inspire a community of responsible, globally-engaged empowered learners”.

The graduating class, like those before them, have shown that they care about each other and supported each other through challenging times. They have found joy through service both locally and internationally, including that most inspiring of projects which has transformed the lives of children in a village in Cameroon. I would encourage all our graduates to carry the spirit of CAS forward into adulthood, enriching their lives through creativity, physical activities and service to the community.

When we read the newspapers or turn on the television, the world can sometimes seem a dark place full of tragedy and potential disasters. However, our young people graduating from ISS give us hope and belief in a brighter future.

I encourage them to take what they have learnt here and step forward into the unknown with confidence, and help build that better world.

I will close by wishing the best of luck to all who are leaving ISS at this time. I have enjoyed working with you – students, parents, and colleagues. And I look forward to welcoming both new and returning families in August ready for another busy year!

Best wishes,

Lynn Park IBDP/IGCSE Coordinator

You have been extremely diligent all year and have hugely impressed your teachers and advisors with your steadfast approach to this year’s workload. Come August, you will revisit your High Five goals and prepare to apply to university or to follow your post High School plan.

Don’t forget that our ISS University Handbook is now available from the Counseling Office if you need more information.

Take time to relax this summer, but be sure to also make time to plan for next year. This is the LAST SUMMER of your High School career! Make the most of your time so that you will enter your senior year recharged and ready.

University VisitsIf you are travelling this summer visit a university campus. Most universities welcome prospective students who want to learn more about their programmes:

Open Days are currently scheduled for many UK universities. You can go to www.opendays.com for specific university Open Day dates.

Also consider a UK University Guided Tour - go to www.osc-ib.com to view arrangements.

If you are going to the USA most universities will have two or three tours and information sessions daily through the summer. Call or email ahead to let them know you are coming.

Whatever country you are in it is worth visiting a campus or two to get a feel for what university life will be like.

As we bring the 2015-2016 school year to a close, we want to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to the many individuals who helped make this High School year so successful.

Certainly our talented and energetic students, the equally talented and professional faculty, the helpful and dedicated parents, and our most amazing and loyal support staff have all contributed to this success.

As we say thank you to all, I’m sure the High School looks forward to even bigger and better accomplishments next year and beyond.

We salute the Class of 2016! We challenged them at the beginning of the year to be the leaders in our school. Wherever they may be heading next year, we wish them well knowing they are well prepared.

To our valued faculty members moving on next year, we also take this opportunity to honor their contributions to the total life here at the ISS High School.

Several of our High School faculty members will be leaving us this year including Dr. Gabriel Amaral, Mr. Steve McGill and Ms. Christina Wensink. We congratulate and thank them for their many wonderful years of selfless service

to the students of ISS. Thank you for your passion, your expertise, and the concern for student learning that has marked your tenure at ISS.

To the students and parents leaving ISS and changing locations this summer, we thank you for your many and varied contributions to the success of this school year.

We also want to wish you every success in the future and we look forward to hearing from you from time to time. After all, “Once an ISS family member, always an ISS family member!”

To those returning next year, please travel safe and return energized and ready to meet the challenges of a new school year.

We wish you all a safe holiday!

As ISS prepares to meet the challenges of the 2016-2017 school year, it does so with the confidence that dedicated and talented individuals surround us on all fronts. It looks forward to those challenges knowing we are all focused on doing what is best for the students it serves. Again, our congratulations and sincere appreciation for the many contributions each ISS family member has made this year. We are definitely a better place because of you.

On a more personal note, it is now time for me to say goodbye and to end my use of the collective pronoun “we” when talking about ISS.

I’ll be taking up a new challenge in August 2016. I will cherish my four years at ISS and will remember many, many people fondly.

It might seem unbefitting but I’m reminded of The Office series finale, Andy Bernard, a character who was working his last day at Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company, was talking about how he would remember his time there. He had some regrets about not enjoying each day enough. He said, “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days, before you’ve actually left them.” I think I do know.

And I tried my hardest to enjoy every day here. And while I’m excited about the next chapter, it hurts to finish this one. But it should. I’d be worried if it didn’t.

With thanks to the ISS community.

The 12th Grade mums organised a potluck breakfast for the Seniors on Friday 29 April to boost them before the IB exams the following Monday. It was a huge success, and both students and teachers really enjoyed it.

The students had a last pep talk from Dr. Brown and Ms. Park, and it was nice to see them all together for the last time.

Middle School End of Year Recognition Ceremony

This event will take place on the last morning of school Thursday, 9th June starting at 9:30am until 11:30. This will be the final ceremony of the year where many student achievements will be recognised, a farewell to our 8th grade students, student entertainment and will conclude with a memory picture slide show of the school year. All parents are welcome to attend.

Now is the time for the final words… I have had a marvellous time working with our wonderful Middle School faculty, you, the parents, and the Middle School students this year. Students are LEARNING, students are happy and cared for and have had wonderful experiences to remember, always.

They have acquired skills that they can carry into the next grade level and for life both as a student, but equally as importantly as a good person.

For those of you who are leaving ISS, I wish you all the very best. Keep us in your hearts and please do not hesitate to come back and visit. ISS will always be a part of each of you and I hope that you keep your memories from ISS close to your heart.

For those of you who will be returning next year have a

great summer, rest well and return to make 2016-2017 another great year.

Good luck to our wonderful 8th grade class as they move from Middle School into High School and 9th grade next year.

Have a fantastic summer!

Thorfin investigated how structural arrangement of beams affects how much mass the structure holds Kellly with her work about age and social distance

Students in the seventh grade spent semester 2 investigating a topic for the science fair. Questions ranged from “how does age affects blood pressure” to “which coffee stains your teeth the most.” Students collected data on their topics, analyzed it and presented their results at the annual 7th grade Science Fair in which the school and community were invited to view their work.

Students used their math and science skills to summarize their results in the form of tables, graphs, analysis and photographs. During the fair, they answered questions from parents, teachers and students. They took the opportunity to explain their posters, and communicate what they learned from their investigations.

T&A: So Hasan, tell us a little bit about yourself!

H: Well, my name is Hasan, I am 21 years old and I come from Aleppo in Syria.

T&A : Can you tell us what your life was like back in Alepo before the war?

H: Life in Aleppo was very nice and normal before the war. Everything was easily available and the city was very lovely. I went to university and everything was great.

T&A: When did you realize you had leave Aleppo?

H: Because I was over 18, I was recruited by the national army but I didn’t want to join. The army that I was supposed to join was bombing my home town, so I didn’t want to put my family and friends in danger. The war started to affect me too much, so I had to leave.

T&A: So how did you journey out of Syria start?

H: Firstly I took a bus from Aleppo to the border of Turkey, then I crossed it illegally and then I took a bus to Istanbul.

T&A: How did you manage to cross the sea to Greece?

H: In total, I had 3 attempts at crossing the sea. The first 2 times the motor of the boat failed, but the third time it worked. The boat was very small and overcrowded, and this was the worst part of my entire trip.

T&A: Afterwards, what countries did you go through?

H: Well, after Greece I went through Macedonia, then Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and finally Norway.

T&A: In total, how long did your journey last?

H: From Turkey to Norway, it took me 25 days.

T&A: So how long have you been here in Norway? Do you like it here?

H: I’ve been in Norway for 7 months, and at first I thought it was very cold here! Afterwards I started to get used to it and I really like it here now. The people here are very friendly and helpful and the nature is beautiful.

T&A: After the war is over, would you like to return to Aleppo?

H: Yes, I would like that a lot. I really miss my home and my family and friends.

T&A: What do you think we can do to help the situation in Syria ?

H: Well, it is almost impossible to help the situation in Syria, but you can help the refugees that have already left, by organizing activities for refugees.

T&A: How are your family and friends back in Syria?

H: They are doing ok, they are still living in Aleppo and they are living in danger, there is fighting and bombs all around them.

T&A: We wish them all the best and thank you so much for your time Hassan!

H: Thank you!

Summer is in the air... The Early Childhood and Primary School children are becoming more and more excited about the summer holidays. The energy throughout the school is reaching extreme highs.

The ISS 50th Anniversary celebrations over May 13-17 was a spectacular family time for our community. The children enjoyed games, ice cream and barbecue. Each class contributed items to be placed in the new 5Oth Anniversary Time Capsule. This is not be be opened until 2066!

Norway’s Anniversary was celebrated in style. Preschool 3 & 4 had their own parade on Wednesday May 12. The school band led the way while all of the other students and staff cheered them on. Kindergarten through Grade 5 participated in the May 17 parade in Stavanger.

The children were incredibly patient as they waited to start the parade downtown. Once we had got moving, the time passed quickly, and the children were merrily waving to everyone as we walked along. The Grade 4 students sang songs and played the bells, while Grade 5 carried international flags and other grade levels cheered.

The musical, Tom and the Magic Violin by T. C Harry was directed by Christine Kemp and performed by our Grade 3 - Grade 5 students, May 26-28. It was a spectacular show that included dance, choral singing, solos and a marvelous story about living in harmony.

We will be celebrating the Summer Olympics (just a little early). Ms. Jenny Collins and Ms. DeFazio have organized a summer olympic theme for our Early Childhood and Primary School field days Thursday, June 2 and Friday, June 3. During this project, the children have been introduced to the history and information of the modern day Olympics including the Olympic rings. The rings of blue, black, yellow, red and green, which make up one of the most recognized symbols in the world, traditionally represent the colors of the flags of all the countries that compete in the Olympics. Truly an international event.

To lead up to the big day(s), Ms. Jenny Collins arranged for a ring drawing competition where the children were encouraged to be creative and represent their interpretation of the Olympics. You can see all the drawings on the big board outside Jill Raven´s office.

Many children voluntarily gave up their recess time (3 recesses) to participate in our “Jump a-thon” that took place May 24-27. The children were able to “jump” in a variety of ways including skip rope, jump sticks and hoop jumping. The total money raised was 10,000.00 NOK! Thank you all for the generous donations.

All of the money raised will be donated to Sarah Louise Rung, a Paralympic Athlete from here in Stavanger. She will be competing in swimming events at the summer olympics August 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro. To learn more about Sarah check out this web site. https://www.paralympic.org/news/sarah-louise-rung-why-i-love-swimming.

There was an opening ceremony in the theater on May 30 to kick-off our week of Olympic activities. On our Olympic field days, June 2 (Preschool -Grade 1) and June 3 (Gr.2-5) the children will be organized in multi-grade level teams that represent different countries. There will be a torch run and a parade of nations, the children will carry flags they have made and then they will compete together as a team in the many different activities.

It is expected that all the children will have a great time moving from activity to activity within their teams. We anticipate that all of our ISS students will be exemplar in exhibiting the three Olympic values; Respect, Friendship

and Excellence. Look for pictures from your classroom teachers and ISS Facebook!

Celebrating the King’s DayOn the 27th of April, the Dutch community celebrated King’s Day with a swinging, colorful parade and several festive activities during the after school, where both students and parents were involved.

Koningsdag is known for its nationwide vrijmarkt (“free market”), at which the Dutch sell their used items. It is also an opportunity for “orange madness” or oranjegekte, a kind of frenzy named for the national colour.

Library News!

Nothing bolsters a child’s self-esteem more than spending time together, playing together and listening to each other!

So why not pull out a board game tonight? Playing games is an easy and excellent way to spend unhurried, enjoyable time together.

As an added bonus, board games are also rich in learning opportunities. They satisfy your child’s competitive urges and the desire to master new skills and concepts. It also helps with number and shape recognition, grouping, counting, letter recognition, reading, visual perception, hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity!

Games don’t need to be overtly academic to be educational, however. Just by virtue of playing them, board games can teach important social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns, and enjoying interaction with others.

Board games can foster the ability to focus, and lengthen your child’s attention span by encouraging the completion of an exciting, enjoyable game.

Even simple board games like Chutes and Ladders offer meta-messages and life skills: Your luck can change in an instant — for the better or for the worse. The message inherent in board games is: Never give up. Just when you feel like things cannot get better, you might hit the jackpot, you just need to stay in the game! Here at ISS we want to support both you and your children in creating such learning opportunities and family memories. We are therefor proud to announce a new resource available for check out to our families, GAME BOXES. Each box contains a board game, 3 read aloud books following the games theme and, in many cases, craft and activity ideas to make each box into a weekend activity.

Game boxes are available for checkout to all ISS families for a week at a time. Come in to your library to find out more or visit the library catalog on the ISS website (isstavanger.no) and search for GAME BOXES.
