EDITORIALand I confessI look forwardto these projectsThere were somerumours and criticson the internetimmediately afterthe Tomcat was introduced, that itis too simple, but to my mind, this isan advantage, not a disadvantage. The simple kits are usually goodsellers, because the complicatedones makes people wary, and onlya minority of them have enough timeto build complicated and expensive

kits today, and those that do haveenough time and desire to builda detailed model can fall back onaftermarket sets. Ours, preferably. But thats not the reason Im writingthese worlds. Actually, we have comedown that road, too. The rst kit wemade in a simplied form was theHellcat some years ago, and therewere rapturous criticisms aroundthe kit because it was deemed toosimple, but became quite adoredby reviewers maybe already yearlater. So, from me, thank you, Tamiya!

I also met Mr. Koike Shigeo in Shi-zuoka,and we discussed the new artfor our Eduart project. The next oneof these projects, called Sound ofSilence, depicting a close encounterof a Vietnamese MiG-21PFM anda US Marines Skyhawk, will bereleased soon, in July. And nally, while on the topic of about Japan,we are going to open our web siteand Facebook site in Japaneseon July 1st , 2016.

While on the subject of Junereleases, we are introducing threenew kits in our typical arrangement ofPropack-Limited Edition-Weekend,in 48-48-72 scale respectively. There is the Bf 109G-5 high altitudeghter in the ProPACK line, with allrelevant G-5 details, such as thepressurized canopy with silica gelcapsules in the corners of the canopyframe, and the head armour closingthe middle section of the canopyhatch, as well as the small dimple

on the right nose bulge. There areve marking options, and the decalsheet is an Eduard printing.

Note also the Limited Edition item, this month in the form of the Saab

J-35 Draken. The original Hasegawakit is packaged in our style, with fourmarking options of all four operators;the Swedish, Finnish, Danish andAustrian Air Forces. The decal sheetis a Cartograf product, and thephoto-etch and mask sheets areincluded, as well as Brassin wheels

and ejection seat. There are 3000pcs of this item being released. Thetriplet of May kit releases is roundedout with a 1/72 Weekend editionFw 190A-8/R2 heavy ghter witharmoured cockpit and two 30mmMK 108 cannon in the wings. Thereare two marking options in the box,on an Eduard printed decal sheet. We are also releasing a couple ofdetail sets associated with thesekits, such as Brassin 648262 Draken Danish pylons, with the weapon

pylons unique to the Danish AFDrakens. To include these six pylonsin the kit would increase the kit retailprice by too much of a margin, withless value for the customer (typically,it would be useful to 25% ofcustomers, but in reality it could bejust few percentage points). So withthis in mind, we decided to releasethe pylons as an aftermarket item. There is also a photo-etch set in thelist of May releases, extending thePE detail options over the kit boxPE set choice. There is also a Zoom

set and Mask set for Fw 190A-8/R2(SS557 and CX449).

Turning our attention to our photo-etch range, we have the T-44 Sovietpost war tank and the latest Russiantank design, the T-14 Armata,in 1/35th scale. There is alsoan Israeli Nagmachon set in thesame scale. We do have three setsfor the King George V in 1/350,and you can also nd a BIGED setfor the USS Texas in 1/350 scalein the BIGED listing. The aircraftsets are the backbone of the PE lineas usual. The 1/48th scale Su-33by Kinetic is a surprisingly nice kit,in comparison with earlier Kineticreleases. We decided to release

    Dear friends,

We have sold out of our MiG-21MF Limited edition kit shortlybefore the end of May, which wefeel is a big success. If you missed thisitem in our web store, you do havea chance to get it from some of theother shops, some of them receivedtheir deliveries later in May and sothe kit can still be had.

Although more than 50% of theedition was sold in the Czech Republic, this MiG-21MF Limited Editionremains the most successful book-kitin our range. Also, it is good to note

the MF is the most successful versionamong all the MiG-21 versionsin our production line, with some50 % of the market share, and again,50% of them were sold in the CzechRepublic. Oh, sorry, Czech Republicwas ofcially renamed Czechia, soplease, try to remember this. Eitherway, it shows how important theMiG-21MF was for the Czech AirForce and the former CzechoslovakAir Force, and the success in termsof kit sales is a good reason tocontinue on with the MF in the future. It would make sense that 1/72ndscale kit and its versions should benext. It is a very frequent question, weather we intend to release1/72nd scale MiG-21s, and theanswer is yes.

Another frequent question isif we might release the MiG-23(ex Trumpeter) as well. The answeris also yes, but this one will haveto wait for the book. We agreedwith the author of the MF book

about putting together a MiG-23in Czechoslovak Service publicationin some two years time.

I have visited Japan after twoyears in May, and it was reallya very pleasant trip. I spent a longertime in Tokyo, and you can see thephoto report from Yasukuni shrinethere in this issue, and, of course, the Shizuoka Hobby Show, whichwas very impressive this year. I waspretty sceptical about kit releasesbefore this trip, but, nally, there

was some very positive news. TheTomcat from Tamiya probably topsthe list, their M-10 in 1/35th scale, too. Its always a pleasure to createaftermarket detail sets for suchkits as those produced by Tamiya,

in quarter scale. Check also all sixBIG ED sets and the single BigSin set, which is designed for the HKM Mosquito(1/32nd scale).

We will be in Nymburk Kit saloonon June 18, 2016, with our booth andcollection of new July releases, includingour new Spitre Mk.IXC (late version) in1/72 scale with all Brassin and PE detailsets released simultaneously with the kitin July, and include 4 types of wheels, two types of exhaust and the cockpitinterior (single style) in the Brassinline, and general upgrade set and thelanding aps set in the PE line. The twoother July kits will be introduced theretoo, which are the Lysander in 1/48thscale Propack and Yak-3 in 1/48thscale Weekend edition. New Brassinbazookas in 1/32nd scale designed forthe Hasegawa P-40 will be introducedthere too, with a BigSin for ourBf 109G-6, new addition to Steelbelts

collection, which will be Soviet andIJA WWII belts and many other Julyreleases. Maybe even the Sound ofSilence will make an appearance!I understand that the majority of youwont be coming to Nymburk. So, let metell you a little something about Augustkits, which will be introduced in Columbiaduring the IPMS USA convention.

a set for their 1/48th scale SuperEtendard too, as well as for theJ2F-5 Duck, by Merit. The 1/48thscale line is touched up with theUS Chaff and Flare Dispensers set, which is new in our design approach.1/72 scale looks interesting too, withthree sets for the Airx BlenheimMk.IF, Special Hobby Mirage F.I andAMK L-29 Deln. Despite this, what

I see as the most interesting is therelease of the second wave of steelseatbelts in all three main scales. These newly styled colour seatbeltsare highly innovative products, withan exceptional thickness of only0,04 mm for the fabric colour partof the belts. These are beautifullyshapeable, with shading on thecolor surface. Whilst they look at,we have designed these seatbeltsto be easy to use, with a realisticappearance, which they have, andthey look magnicent when applied.

There are two designs in eachscale, 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32nd, forLuftwaffe WWII bombers and BritishWWII aircraft in each of thesescales. More styles will follow in thenext months. See also set 49779,US Chaff and are dispenser, which will be a useful improvementfor US modern aircraft models

The Harrier GR.7/9 in 1/48th,ex-Hasegawa, in the LimitedEdition line, Bf 109G-6 withthe classic birdcage canopyin 1/48th Propack line, andthe Fw 190A-5 with the fourcannons wing in 1/72nd scaleWeekend boxing. Sounds prettygood, doesnt it?

    Keep on modelling!

The Yasukuni Shrine was establishedin 1869 at Kudan as Tky Shkonshaby the will of Emperor Mutsuhito, alsoknown as Emperor Meiji, in honor ofthe victims of the Boshin Civil War thatwas waged in 1868-1869 between theImperial Court and the Tokugawa sho-gunate. The Boshin War was the nalevent of long-term tensions in Japane-se society brought out by the openingof the country to international tradein 1854. The tensions included severaluprisings, and the eventual fall of theshogunate and restoration of power tothe Emperor. In 1866/67 (sources dif-

fer), both shogun Tokugawa and Empe-ror Kmei died. The successors of thenew and last Yoshinobu Tokugawashogun handed power over to the newEmperor Mutsuhito in the fall of 1867,declaring their will to serve the Empe-ror and to give the new governmentthe support of shogun assets. EmperorMutsuhito, known today as EmperorMeiji, declared a full and complete re-newal of sovereign power at Kyto on

January 4th, 1867. However, radicalsof Chsh and Satsuma Domains (to-days Yamaguchi, Kagoshima and Miya-zaki Prefectures) under the leadership

of Takamori Saig enforced the totalabolition of the shogunate and theconscation of Yoshinobus property.Yoshinobu responded by declaringthat he did not feel bound by thedeclaration of the restoration of powerand following a series of arson attacksat Edo, the seat of Tokugawas power,a war broke out in late January thatwas waged on both land and waterby sides that used both traditionallyorganized and equipped units as wellas those that were organized and equi-pped after western models. In January,1868, at the beginning of the war,

when shogunate units supported byFrench military advisers attacked Ky-to, defended by units of the ChshPrincipality and Satsuma under theEmperors ag and formally under thecommand of Prince Akihito Komatsu,

thereby ocially forming the ImperialArmy. initially, this Imperial Army wasweaker than the Shogunate units thathad a superiority of around 3:1. butthe Imperial army was better organi-zed and armed, including having someGatling guns at their disposal. Thanksto the better organization and equip-ment, the upper hand was gained fairlyquickly Takamori Saig was victoriousat the battle of Ksh and Katsunumaand laid siege to Edo, which capitulatedin May. After the capitulation, and thevictory of the imperial forces at Uenoin July, the remnants of the shogunateforces and the basically unbeaten na-val forces retreated back to the islandof Hokkaid, where the republic of Ezowas proclaimed, the only republic to befounded on Japanese territory. On Oc-tober 26, 1868 (some sources claimingOctober 23), it was renamed Tky,and on that day ocially began theMeiji Period. The war continued withpreparations for the Imperial Navyinvasion of Hokkaid and naval battlesfought in the port of Miyakoin the north of Honsh, and the deci-sive battle of Hakodate, in which bothsides used modern steamships.A pivotal role in these battles was play-ed by Japans rst ironclad, the Kotetsu, built in France as the CSS Stonewall. The Boshin civil war ended with thesurrender of the Ezo Republic at theend of June, 1869.Deied souls (kami) of fallen soldiersfrom the Boshin civil war were laid torest in the newly established Sh-konsha Shrine in the second year of

the Meiji Period, in 1869. In 1874, theshrine was visited by Emperor Meiji, and there he wrote a poem dedicatedto those that laid down their lives fortheir homeland (I assure those, whobattled and died for their country, thattheir names will live on in eternityin this Temple of Musashino). In 1879,the shrine was renamed, by the willof the Emperor, Yasukuni and underthe development of Shintoism into thestate religion it became a placeto honour the fallen. Written onhandmade paper within the shrinesReijibo handen building are more

than 2,466,000 names of fallen soldiersin wars in the 19th and 20th centuries, the Seinan War, Sino-Japanese War,Russo-Japanese War, the First WorldWar, the Manchurian and Chinese warsof the thirties, and the Second WorldWar, which the Japanese refer to as theGreat East Asian War. Reijibo handenis located in a grove behind the maintemple (Haiden) and the main sanctu-ary (Honden) where the kami dwell. When the cherry blossoms are in blo-om, the kami, the deied souls, rein-carnate into the blossoms. In Yasakuni, these Somei Yoshino and Yamazakuras

Daini Torii, the Second Shrine Gate, is a bronze structure built in 1887. It is the tallest such structu-re in Japan. Behind it is the main gate into the sanctuary, Shinmon. Built of Cypress wood, it was

nished in 1934 and was restored in 1994. Each of the two massive doors carries the Imperialchrysanthemum of 1.5m diameter.

A memorial to the Russo-Japanesewar with relief detail depicting specicevents, including several dedicatedto the battle at Tsushima.

The statue of Masujir mura was the rst guresculpture of western inuence to be made in Japan. It was created in 1893. Some may recall the villainmura from the lm The Last Samurai. The lm ver-sion was true to the historical gures key role in themodernization of the Imperial Army, but fell short interms of character and time. The historical Masujirmura came from a family of physicians in ChshProvince, and he was blessed with a quality educati-on. Besides Confucius philosophy, he studied westernmedicine, technology and military tactics. Reportedly,he was also involved in the design of Japans rstmodern warship. He commanded the army

of Chsh Province in an uprising against the sho-gunate in 1866, and during the Boshin War, he wasa deputy in the War Department and was involvedin the command of military operations. After the war,he was insistent on the maintaining of the moderni-

zation trend of the Imperial military, making him anenemy of the reactionary samurai who took this trendas a negative thing. A renewal of imperial sovereigntywas seen as a renewal in isolationism, and a returnto traditional organizational structures, and the reignof the Meiji Period would very much disappointin that. In September, 1869, he was attacked bya group of Samurai and succumbed to his injuries onNovember 5, at the age of 46. While on the subject ofhistorical gures depicted in the lm The Last Samu-rai, the above mentioned Takamori Saig becamea spokesman and leader of disgruntled traditiona-lists, left the court and the government, followed bya list of signicant gures, and became the leader

of a samurai rebellion known as the Seinan War orthe Satsuma Rebellion. He fell in the nal epic battleat Shiroyama. In the lm, he was named Katsumoto, and had more in common with the historical gurethat he played than his counterpart portrayingmura. Both were well played, Ken Watanabe wasvery charismatic, while the villain mura, played byMasato Harada was downright awesome.

church and state. Within the shrine, there are many statues, memorials andbuildings, one of which houses a tradi-tional Japanese n theatre (Ngakud),and there is also a Sum ring. Exhibiti-ons of the leading wrestlers, includingthe Yokozuna (the top level sumo) havebeen a part of the traditional springfestival since the beginning of thesanctuary. For modellers, perhaps themost interesting and attractive porti-on of the establishment would be theYshkan museum. It opened in 1882and was expanded in 2002. It is one ofa few Japanese museums with displays

dedicated to modern wars, includingthe Second World War. The majority ofthe following photo report is dedicatedto the Yshkan museum.

HISTORYWith the entry of Japan into the Second WorldWar, the displays are very detailed, andas usual, with many historical artifacts, andcampaigns laid out chronologically.

One of the more controversial items in the exhibi-tion, dedicated to the Tky War Crimes Trials. The

panel maintains a clear gap with respect to thevictorious powers and provides a denite Japanese

point of view, which, especially to Chinese andKorean ocials, as well as peace activists, provides

a certain eyesore element. Those interested in thebackground of the trials might do well to see the lmby Peter Weber, the Emperor. The parallel story linemapping out the relationship with the protagonistand a Japanese teacher gives the movie a touchof a bubblegum feel, but it is likely that without it,the movie for most, especially female, audienceswould be much too dry, while those of us witha powerful interest in the history, could do without it, and the movie has several climaxes thatmake it worth seeing. The meeting between GeneralMacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones) and Emperor Hirohito(Takatar Kataoka) is an interesting historicalmoment and the invitation to the Emperor to visitGeneral MacArthur is well done. I recommend this

lm, and it certainly has its own quality.

A special spot is dedicated to the Indian judge in the Tky tribunal (Dr. Radhabinod Pal, January 27, 1886 - February 10, 1967) who was the only oneof the judges that found the accused innocent of the charges before them. He is a revered gure by the Japanese, and he is also honoured by his own mo -nument before the historical museum building, and has another memorial in Kyoto at the Ryzen gokoku shrine.

    HISTORY

The most attractive area for the modeller is likely the main hall, where a number of important historical artifacts are kept. This Yokosuka D4Y2 was discovered as a wreck on theisland of Yap in the western Caroline Islands, and was restored through the eighties at Kiramazu Air Base. The fuselage is actually from a D4Y1. It is displayed in the markings

    of the Kktai 523.

A replica of the MXY-7 Ohka hanging in the main hall. A memorial is also specically dedica-ted to the Kamikaze pilots in front of the museum building (Photo on page 32.)

    Archaeological relicts.

Connected to the Ohka theme, there is a large diorama with 1/32 scale modelsdepicting an attack by a group of G4M Bettys carrying MXY-7 Ohkas escortedby a group of A6M5 Zeros, on the American eet at Okinawa. The inscription platedescribes the origin of the cherry blossom insignia on the side of the Ohka fuselage, and how the members of the unit agreed to meet after death at the second cherrytree to the right and behind the shrine gate.

Another charismatic peice on display at the museum is the Kaiten Type 1, a torpedo with a human crew. This Kaiten is on permanent loanfrom the US Army museum in Hawaii. A part of a Kaiten Type 4 hull is exhibited as well.

A dedication plaque for the battleship Mutsu, in honour of the 1122 crew that perished.

Medium tank Chi-Ha Type 97. This tank served with the 9th Tank Batallion in Manchuria, in April,1944 was moved to Saipan where it was destroyed on July 7, 1944. In the seventies, the wreckof the tank was taken to Japan and in 1974 was donated to the Yshkan museum.

A 140mm cannon from the battleship Mutsu, sunk on June 8th, 1943.

Care and devotion are evident in the events surrounding the ceasereof August 15, 1945.

HISTORYThe deepest impression on meat the museum was made bya tablet that contains photogra-phs, set chronologically, of thefallen during the Second WorldWar. Day by day, name by name, fate by fate. It has strength andweight. Few places and museu-ms have been able to equal theimpression made on me here,by this tablet.

One of the halls is dedicatedto athletes that have representedJapan.

Some personalities have displaysdedicated to them describing theirlife experiences and ultimate fate, containing historical artifacts thatare relevant to them, often dona-ted by the families of the fallen.

    HISTORY

Fukutoku shrine torii gate. Beerhouse is located by the corner.

How the beerhouse looks outside. Dont worry, come in, follow the beer. There aremany veeeery good beers inside, they do have couple of local tasty sakes as well.

Former Edo castle Tayasu gate, Kitanomaru garden entrance, it is located acrossthe street of Yasukuni.

What to add? The Yasukuni Shrine is an interesting andpowerful place, carrying with it a strong spirit of history. We,who have history as an umbilical chord to the understan-ding of historical events, giving us a sense of continuity andunderstanding of current events, can nd here many itemsthat give cause for reection, and a sense of honour to thosethat this place is dedicated. The Yshkan Museum exhibitspersonally do not give me any sense of glorication to mili-tarism or a sense of celebration of war, but rather a strongsense of honour to the victims of war, and of the ultimateprice paid by those in the pursuit of peace.

If you make your way to Tokyo and decide to visit Yasukuni, you will have a fairly easy time of it. There are three subwaystations nearby. The metro system is very wide, but also verywell organized and understandable. The shortest route andthe most interesting entrance to the hall are from the stationKudanshita. I would also have to suggest not being accompa-nied by those unaected by a fascination of military history, that typically meaning wives and girlfriends. The sanctuarywill have a good eect on the ladies, it is interesting and isa picturesque place, and as long as there is no senseof burnout from all the other touristy things to do and see,

it will be a benecial experience. But even the most patientof them will not likely have the necessary fortitude neededto experience the exhibits at Yshkan to their fullest, andif that is what you intend to do, then some form of agre-ement and plan is in order. Fortunately, there are many

places to accommodate such planning, such as, for example, right across the street, the wide and accessible gardensof Kitanomaru with a museum of modern art, behind whichthere is the eastern garden of the Imperial Palace. Relativelynearby, using the subway system, is the Ginza, or Nihonba-shi with the famous Mitsukoshi mall. Japan is not really thebest place on the planet to go shopping, and there are notmany more expensive places to shop in the world than thisone, but is still worth seeing; the wooden plastic in the ves-tibules of the old building are mesmerizing, and the pastryshop in the basement of Mitsukoshi are a delight to the eyeas well as the taste bud. Across the street begins anothershopping district with many stores and restaurants, and thesurrounding area provides many destinations for tourists. For example, there is the famous Fukutoku Shrine, a goodplace for me since just one street over, there is the aweso-me Craft Beer Market. The service people speak awesome

Japanese, a little English, so you might as well be speakingin Czech. But, where theres a will, theres a way. The menufor the beer and liquor is in English, same as the food menu. The level of service is typically high, and it is a great spot toponder all that you have seen and to meet up with wivesor girlfriends.

    Saynara!
