In 300 words or less, please tell us how you have led or been influential in the
area(s) you have selected above. (Environmental Sustainability)
I come from Bhojpur district of country Nepal, naturally gifted country with 867
species of birds, more than 1900 mountains, among them 17 are above 8000
including Mt. Everest;network of 17 protected areas since 1973, consisting several
national parks and world heritage sites, one horned rhino and lots more natural
beauty. However the shocking fact is previously dense 40% of total land has
abruptly fallen to 24% only while giving rise to climate change. The air pollution
statistics shows that our capital city Kathmandu has already crossed the adverse
threshold level according to WHO. Unmanaged waste materials has led to the
destruction of natural resources like river, streams, forest and flora and fauna.
Professionally I‟m an engineer and I believe an engineer is the one who
acknowledges different patterns in the environment and applies that useful pattern
for the welfare of human being while keeping overall natural eco-system intact.
Even though by educational background, I‟ve always been familiar with latest
innovations and technology, travelled several districts including extremely rural
areas in order to teach about technology, I‟ve been always fascinated by natural
environment, greeneries and flora and faunas. That‟s why I‟m always in search of
the way to improve my environment my means of engineering knowledge.
Regardless of these situations I‟ve been able to motivate myself and others around
me to work for the welfare of environment. I was always fascinated by the way
Japanese preserve their society, the way they perform plantation, strong enough to
tolerate powerful tsunami. I feel so proud that I could lead a project of „Restoration
of native forest‟ with Japanese volunteers by learning Japanese languages for few
months only. This program has made a world heritage Changunarayan area site to
flourish its green beauty with much strong roots planted by Miwawaki method.
Further more I‟ve been involved in several renewable energy, like solar energy,
biomass, biogass. During engineering, I had participated in “I‟m not emitting
anymore” program and in fact won a bicycle to support green environment. These
activities have made me possible to land on a job as “Technical consultant” under
Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (Nepal) under NRREP project with the co-
operation of World bank, ADB, DAAD, JAICA, etc. in order to perform biogass
related activities throughout the country.During the job I‟ve to travel through
various areas of my country, convince them about the biogas‟s importance and
help them to build one in order to utilize their wastes for the production of their
daily energy demand of heat and electricity on a way of solving one of the major
problem of Nepal, loadsheeding, the lack of electricity (upto 16 hrs per day).
I‟m not emmiting anymore
What makes your city youthful?
Nowdays, in our city Kathmandu, we can see several youth led activities in different timing and scenario
which are directed towards the welfare of our country.
Kathmandu cycle city
The greener kathamandu
Waste to energy projects
Youth campaigns for disabled
Diff NGOs leaded by youth
Campaign about HIV aids
Youths interested in politics has risen
Entrepreneurship
New youth initiatives are mushrooming
The quality of education has risen about of international level.
Nepali youth for climate action
Leadership
I live in Kathmandu, densely populated and extremely busy capital city which is categorized as extremely
polluted as well. But even the intolerable air pollution of my city has not affected the motivation of
youths towards making naturally beautiful city. Every weekend we can see various youth leaded
environment related activities like ‘Bagmati river cleaning campaign’, ‘Kathmandu cycle city’, ‘Greener
Kathmandu’, ‘Nepali youths for climate action’, and several others related to climate change and
conservation of environment and even making the government aware about the environment. I
personally participate in these campaigns in every other week. While seeing these activities, it can be
felt that our environment is surely going to change for the best and we all youths must contribute it
anyway possible for the conservation of environment.
How do you want to influence your city in the next 5-10 years
Pollution less
Wastes minimized
Wastes converted to energy as much as possible
Somewhat Independent of non-renewable energy
New generation’s focus on preservation of environment, sanitation, health
Lack of disease, full of health, full of greeneries, managed society and city
Sustainable environment
Balanced eco-system
Balanced ecology
Symbiosis environment by using biogas (symbiotic sys)
Ideally I see my city completely pollution free, environment conserving and a kind of symbiotic system
where we can use our household waste to generate the daily needs of energy like cooking gas and
electricity. That’s why I’ve chosen this job of “Biogas Technical Consultant” to research and find out
about the exact match with the current problem in my city. However in practical way, in the next 5-10
years, I’d like to see my city almost independent to the energy supply by the government by using
biogas and solar technologies. Likewise I want to make the next generation extremely focused in the
conservation of environment, which will lead towards good health and sanitation allowing to live a
blissful life. This is very important that every human being must be concerned about the surrounding
environment they belong, it is like our extended self, so we must take care about it in any way possible.
Furthermore, as an Engineer I want convince my subordinates, my colleagues and government to focus
on the developmental activities without disturbing the eco-system of environment while stressing on
environmental conservation as well. I lead an NGO which works for education and I’ve convinced my
team to always include environmental education in anyway possible.
