Annual Sports Day

The Annual Sports

Day was held on

the 13th of

November, 2014 at

the Dubai Police

Stadium. Our

young athletes

showed great team

spirit and battled

to the finish in all

the events. The

students proved

the maxim that

participation is

more important

than winning. The

Aquarius House

lifted the Over- all

Winners Trophy.

KG Sports Day was held on the 24th and 25th of November. Students learnt about sportsmanship through various funfilled races. Every one participated without thinking about winning or losing. They were seen accepting challenges andaccomplishing it successfully. All were awarded with participation certificates and goodies at the end of the day. Manyparents were present to cheer the children.

The Middle School supervisors Ms. Sheeba Manoj and Mr. Samuel Crizzle were the chief guests for day 1 and 2respectively. Our Principal, Mrs. Suresh, in her speech reminded parents to enjoy the wee years of children. OurHeadmistress, Mrs. Rao encouraged the parents to be a part of the school happenings.

Studentsfrom other schools,enjoyed thisinnovative platformfor their creativeminds to unleash andshowcase theirtalents, through anensemble of eventslike Caper and Fuse,Colour Splash,Cadence, Spell Beeand Sudoku.

CHRYSALIS

On the 19th of November,2014,“Pink Day” was celebrated across all the sections of the school to draw attention and

spread awareness among the students about Breast cancer. Students were dressed in pink tops and other pink color

accessories. Breast Cancer Awareness videos were shown to the students , there by supporting the cause and spreading

awareness among the students and teachers.

‘Pink Day’ was all about showing support to the fighters and admiring the survivors. Teachers created awareness in the

classrooms by speaking about it with their students. Special awareness cards were made by the students for their

mothers, telling them, how much they love them, and to take care of their health.

The little ones went back home with a card carrying a message for their mothers saying ,“Mom, I love you. Take good

care of yourself”.

National Geo Fest - Ms. Deepti and our team of 9 students went to India to attend the National Geo Fest organized by

City Montessori School, Lucknow from 8th to 11th November. Our students did us proud by winning two trophies. They

won the second prize in the category of Senior Model Making and a Dance Commendation Certificate. Students also

lifted a trophy for being the Best Groomed Team out of 70 schools that participated in this event.

A big thank you to the parents of these students and staff for their constant support and encouragement.

Our students once again put up an entertaining show for GULF RANGOLI SEASON 4. In this season, our students locked

horns with schools from Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman in addition to our home turf UAE. The synchronization of our

dancers and singers was much appreciated by the jury and also the social message that they brought out in the School

Round – Water the Elixir of Life. The jury made a special mention of Lakshmi Banu Prakash for her dazzling performance.

The Celebration Round saw a blend of Rajasthani folk dance and Bhangra, which our energetic and enthusiastic dancers

put up with graceful steps. The Music Round was also fabulous and gained plenty of applause from the jury.

Hindi being National language of India deserves well earned respect and love from everyone. To mark this respect,

Hindi Diwas was celebrated on the 19th of November,2014 by the Senior school girls with great zeal and fervor. The

celebrations began with UAE National Anthem followed by Saraswati Vandana and its translation by grade 9 girls.

After which the current news and thought for the day was presented. Then a short Speech on the significance of

Hindi was delivered by a Grade 10 student. This was followed by a spell bound Doha recitation and its translation by

Anupama and Anjela respectively. Book review of Man Sarover written by great Hindi writer Premchand was read.

Inspirational Poem recitation and patriotic song was just a delight to the audience. At the end a lively Dance

performance by grade 10 students, made everyone to tap their feet and enjoy it to the fullest. Senior school

supervisor Mrs. Bharati Bakshi addressed the gathering. She appreciated and congratulated all the participants and

the Hindi teacher for putting up this excellent show.

Children's Day was celebrated at GEMS Our Own Indian School to celebrate childhood and promote awareness about

children's welfare. Special assemblies were held across the sections in the month of November 2014.

The appearance of Chacha Nehru, turned out to be the highlight of the assembly. The Bouncy Castle, arranged in the

school campus was another treat for the tiny tots as they bounced away merrily.The teachers enthralled the students with

medleys of Hindi Bollywood songs, enactments and mellifluous renditions of songs. The scintillating jig by the teachers

was a befitting end to a wonderful day.

Teachers expressed their love and affection to their students by conducting various activities on Children's day. It was afun filled day with pleasant surprises such as the Bouncy Castle, Party Time and Movie Time. The fun filled gamesplanned by the class teachers were highlights of the day. Children enjoyed sharing their party food with everyone in the

class. All in all it was a great celebration of childhood!

Students of Grades 1-D grabbed the opportunity to spread the message on kindness, wherein they brought out simple

incidents in life where they can express kindness through a special assembly. Students presented skits to bring out the

value of kindness, sang a song composed by their class teacher and a dance performance to culminate the assembly,

which had a great impact on the audience as they were spellbound by the entire performance.

The Senior girls and boys (Grades 9 – 12) had their Annual Picnic to ICELAND – Water Theme Park, Ras Al Kamiah and Yas

island respectively on the 27th of November. The staff and the students had an exciting and memorable trip.

The Young Women's Leadership Summit was held on 29th November 2014 at GEMS Our Own English High School. 10 delegates from the Senior Girls section participated in this summit. The delegates met leading women personalities like Mrs. Rithu Khare and Mrs. Sarah Al Mheri from different fields, in high energy sessions. The theme for this year was “Women Complete the Circle of Life”. It was an enriching experience for our young delegates, they were trained by experts in high powered workshops - in Theatre, Public speaking, Painting, Film Making and Dance. The delegates exchanged views, ideas, discussions and healthy arguments. A special mention of our students outstanding performance was mentioned by the jury.

Science and technology has taken forward the present generation with a giant leap. The Budding Scientist Competition is an

attempt to enrich the students’ knowledge in science. The Budding Scientist for Grades 9-12 was conducted on the 19th

of

November,2014 in the Home Science Lab which provided an opportunity for the young geniuses to put their minds and

hands to work. It was an Inter-House competition with each House comprising of two teams with four participants each.

The students were eager to participate in the competition as it gave them a huge exposure. This competition gave

opportunity for students to demonstrate motivation, self-learning, critical thinking, ethics and other important skills and

traits. The judges evaluated them based on originality, creativity, explanation, application and presentation. Their teamwork

and effort paid off well. The judges were thoroughly impressed by the work of the talented students and their models of

Steam engine, Robotic car, Hydro-turbine, structure and functioning of an eye. Way to go Budding Scientists!!!

As Grades 1and 2 were exploring the theme “Food” during the month, a visit to Emirates Macaroni Factory was

organized to befit the theme. Students visited the factory, which is the pioneer of pasta in the entire Middle East,

developed a clear idea about the ingredients used in the production of pasta, and witnessed the entire process of

production and packing of the various types of pasta. The high standard of quality and safety in the factory was well

noticed by them. Students reproduced what they witnessed in the form of drawings and creative writing too! Our

students returned with a baggage of macaroni and a broad smile of satisfaction.

The Grade 8 Middlers of GEMS Our Own Indian School attended the

International Sharjah Book Fair. The boys were privileged to attend a

session where they could hear Dr.Shashi Tharoor share his

experiences and the girls were benefitted by the session conducted

by the renowned Academician, author and Quiz master Dr.Terry O'

Brien.

This was a great exposure to our middlers as they also got an

opportunity to pose their questions to the guest speakers through

their representatives.

It was yet another attempt of the school and the SLT to inculcate the

habit of reading among the students. We are sure that this visit has

rekindled the flame of reading among the middlers.

Students of KG 1 and 2 were takento Dubai Zoo to gather informationabout the wild animals and observethe animals. They were excited towatch how the animals behavedand learnt about their physicalfeatures. The trip to Dubai Zoo wasa rich learning experience for eachand every child.

.Emirates Environmental Group - Mrs. Shradha along

with five students attended the students workshop

organized by EEG on the 4th of this month. The students

of Grade 7 of our school attended a workshop at Sheikh

Rashid School for boys on the 4th November 2014. EEG

offered students the opportunity to broaden their

knowledge base and sharpen their environmental skills.

The main objective of the workshop was to recycle

different kinds of waste for further use. To save precious

raw materials and energy and to help to reduce

pollution. Students were given different categories like

plants, snake, rock etc. The first task was to identify the

materials used for making the pictures presented on the

board. That activity was really helpful and interesting for

them. In the next activity they had to make a sketch on

a new invention that could create or save energy. Then

after break we had to fill an evaluation sheet in which

many questions were asked regarding the workshop.

Then they made a creative poster on reusing, recycling

and reducing things. During this time they learnt how to

divide work among themselves and how to finish a task

within the given time. They were also addressed by DR

Ryan Penny, who spoke to them about a healthy

environment and how one can protect the earth. His

speech was really helpful, interesting and motivating for

our students. At the end of the workshop the students

received posters on the 3R’s, waste paper books and

certificates.

.The Dubai Municipality Annual Clean-Up Program was conducted on the 12th of November. Around 90 of our Middlers

participated in the program. Ms. Shamim along with Ms. Shradha escorted the students.

PIM and PIE Grades 5 and 7 took an assessment to gauge their progress in Mathematics and English.

Islamic Understanding

It was an Islamic Understanding Quiz for Non-Muslims Students. This quiz was conducted through a Powtoon Videomade by Ms. Shamim Akhtar with the support of Ms. Sheeba Manoj along with their active colleagues. Most of thestudents got fantastic marks and were given appreciation certificates. Next session for the winners would be held inthe month of December to find out top 10 students.

.The Tajweed workshop was held successfully on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. It was conducted by Duaa Wajid of

Grade 10 and Mrs. Shamim Akhtar has guided her, Mr. Abul Qasim Islamic HOD also accompanied them to assess and

evaluate how the activities were to be made more interactive, enjoyable and meaningful. Total 45 selected students

both boys and girls participated. Other students also wanted to attend this workshop, unfortunately were unable to,

due to space constraints. All participants enjoyed and learned about Tajweed and its rule “The Basic Arabic letters and

the Ghunnah”. Their active participation, enthusiasm, eagerness, love and interest made the teachers realize that they

should conduct this workshop twice or thrice a year.

The Tajweed workshop was aimed to increase a love and appreciation for recitation of Holy Quran, provide leadership

lessons and exercises based on Tajweed rules and raise the standards of high quality of recitation of Holy Quran in day

to day life.

. Visit to the Tech Park – Grade 8 students were taken to the Tech Park accompanied by their respective class teachers

and ICT teachers.

Second Language Recitation and Elocution

.Inter House Qirat Competition for Grades 5-8 was conducted under the guidance of Islamic Teacher Ms. Shamim

during the month of November.

The Inter house Second language recitation competition for MSB Grades 5 and 6 and Elocution

Competition for gr 7 and 8 was held on the 19th and 20th of November 2014, respectively. The

competition was successfully steered by the language teachers. The selection of poems and articles was

immaculate and the students rendered their poems and prose very well, taking care of the minutest

details regarding the diction and voice modulation. The competition was indeed very stiff and the judges

had a very tough time in choosing the winners. All participants performed exceptionally well winning

Inter House Movie MakingCompetition MSG : Thisinnovative avenue wasopened for the students tolet them explore their flightsof fantasy.Grade 7 and 8 worked on thetheme of Swachh BharatAbhiyan, whereas Grade 5and 6 had the theme –Colours of Life.

The girls enjoyed every bit ofthis activity which resulted inextraordinary productions.

House Mistresses followed upon the scripting, filming andediting. The screening of themovies was held on the 5thof November in the schoolhall.

An Inter house Movie making competition on the theme “DREAMS” was conducted by Middle School Boys’ section forthe students of grade 7 and 8.Taking every possible opportunity to expose children to the art of filmmaking and tosupport their creative skills in media art, is of significant importance. This initiative encouraged children to explore themedium of film in their school life by developing essential skills in moving-image literacy, communication, teamwork andvisual arts. The screening of the movies by different houses was held on the 6th of November 2014 in the school hall. Theteam of ARIES house was adjudged the winner of the Movie making competition. Taurus house was the first Runner upand Leo house was the second runner up.

Sudoku is one of the most popular puzzle games in the world, played by millions of people of all ages. Sudoku is a

more mentally active, participatory form of recreation. Sudoku is a game of logic, critical thinking and making

quick decisions based upon available evidence.

To improve students’ logical thinking, decision-making, deductive reasoning skills, and SUDOKU competition was

introduced this year as an Inter House activity. SUDOKU competition was held on 19th

November 2014 in two

classrooms in two categories (Grade 9-10 and Grade 11-12). 5 participants from each house participated in this

event. The Competition had 3 rounds.

For Grade 9-10: Easy, Medium and Difficult

For Grade 11-12: Medium, Difficult and Expert.

All participants participated enthusiastically in this Brain Game and exhibited their problem solving, logical

thinking and decision making skills.

Our school bagged the First position in the CBSE UAE Cluster Chess

Championship in the Under 19 Category conducted by Sunrise

English Private School, Abu Dhabi on the 1st and 2nd of

November,2014.The team members are Neha Nizam-Grade 12B,

Sushmita Milcah Olivera-11O, Simin Chunawala-10A ,Ema Arun

10A and Reshma Jiji Joseph-10C. These students also participated

in the all India CBSE Chess Nationals held at Amriitsar, Punjab.
