Dear Colleague,
The third Fellowship certification course in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery (FALS) of the Indian
Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons (IAGES) will be held in Mumbai from January
10-12, 2016. The course will be conducted at Center of Excellence for Minimal Access Surgery
Training (CEMAST). The live workshop will be conducted and relayed from Department of GI
Surgery, KEM Hospital, Mumbai on January 11, 2016.
We invite the IAGES Members fulfilling the criteria and interested in the certification to
register for the course.

Selection Criteria
1. Must be a licensed surgeon with Medical Council of India / State Medical Council .
2. Must be a life member of IAGES and hold the FIAGES certification.
3. Should be regularly performing advanced laparoscopic procedures under any of the following
headings / fields:
a. Upper GI surgery
b. Bariatric surgery
c. Solid organ surgery
d. Video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS)
e. Oncosurgery
f. Robotics
4. Must have a log book of 2 years of performing advanced laparoscopic procedures.
5. Must submit at least 4 procedural videos to CEMAST (address given on the registration form) by
December 25, 2015.
6. Every candidate will have to appear for the examination.
7. The decisions of the President and / or Course Coordinator will be final and binding.
Course Structure
1. The Course will be held over a period of three days.
a. First day will comprise of lectures on all six
headings and cover comprehensively all
aspects with special focus on technique and
complications. The candidates are encouraged
to actively interact with the faculty.
b. The second day will be a live operative
workshop. The Committee shall try and
organize at least one case each from each of the
headings listed. Time permitting, more cases
will be shown. It may not always be possible to
transmit robotic or 3D surgery due to logist ic
reasons. Participants will get opportunities for
live audio-visual interaction with the operating
faculty. The cases will be subject to availability.
c. The third day will comprise of practice in the
wet laboratory where faculty will demonstrate
the exercises under various headings. These
exercises will form the guidelines to the
practical examination. The practical exami-
nation will be conducted in the post lunch
session. The examination shall comprise and
shall be based on exercises demonstrated by
the Faculty in the particular heading. The total
marks allotted for practical examination are 80.
d. The theory examination shall be conducted on
the third day (3 hours - 150 marks) followed by
viva (50 marks). The guidelines for theory
examination are as under:
A. Theory examination will consist of 150 marks.
1. Multiple choice questions - 50 marks.
2. Short answers - 70 marks.
(seven questions of 10 marks each).
3. Long answer - 30 marks (one question).
B. Each question will be compulsory though internal
choice will be given e.g. Each question to
be answered will have 2 questions of which one
need be answered.
C. Long question - There will be one question (with
choice) under each heading. The candidate shall
have to answer question from his / her chosen
specialty ONLY e.g. If candidate has chosen
bariatric as chosen specialty, he/she has to answer
long question of bariatric surgery. Last minute
change will not be allowed.
e. Summary of marks will be as follows:
A. Theory - 150 marks.
1. MCQ - 50.
2. Long question - 30.
3. Short questions - 70.
B. Practical - 150 marks.
1. Log book / Video - 20.
2. Wet lab - 80.
3. Viva - 50.
C. The minimum passing criteria will be 50% on the
overall score.
Course Fee
1. Non-refundable course fee of INR 25,000/- in
favour of FALS 2016 .
2. The payment will be in the form of DD / at par
Cheque payable in Mumbai.
3. The fee includes entry to the entire course -
lectures, wet lab demonstration and practice,
theory and practical examinations.
4. Lunch, Tea / Coffee on all three days.
5. Stationary as required.
6. A/C Accommodation on twin sharing basis
can be arranged at (Hotel Rosewood) appro-
ximately 1 km from CEMAST. The hotel acco-
mmodation is not included in the course fee.
Results and Certification
1. Results of the FALS course will be intimated to
the candidates by e-mail.
2. Successful candidates will be awarded the
certificate at the Convocation ceremony during
the IAGES Congress in April 2016 at Srinagar.
3. It is mandatory for the successful candidate to
register for the Congress to avail of the
certificate.
