parish and diocesan ministries, adult faith education and spirituality. In 1987, the Sisters marked the centenary of the Tasmanian foundation by establishing the Emmanuel Pastoral and Spirituality Centre, on the site of the former boarding school in Launceston. This was in response to the needs expressed by the people at the Diocesan Assembly in 1986.

In 1995, at the request of the Catholic people of the area, the Sisters returned to Forth, the second of the Tasmanian foundations, which had closed in the 50’s and established the MacKillop Hill Spirituality Centre on the site.

In 2010, the refurbished Mother House at New Town was opened as the Josephite Mission and History Centre which holds the Tasmanian story for future generations. Staff and students from Catholic schools and, particularly, those schools founded by the Sisters of St Joseph come to the centre to learn their heritage and to experience Josephite spirituality.

As for all the Sisters they founded, Father Julian and Mary MacKillop’s innovative, radical and flexible way of responding to the diverse needs of their times has always provided the inspiration and the challenge for the Tasmanian Sisters of St Joseph.

For many years, it has been the desire of the Tasmanian Sisters to be united with the original congregation, believing that this was also the desire of our founders. Today, we celebrate the fact that this dream has been realised.

THE INTRODUCTORY RITES PROCESSIONAL HYMN:

CANTICLE OF THE SUN Marty Haugen

The heavens are telling the glory of God, And all creation is shouting for joy. Come, dance in the forest, come, play in the field, And sing, sing to the glory of the Lord.

Praise for the sun, the bringer of day, He carries the light of the Lord in his rays, The moon and the stars who light up the way Unto your throne.

Praise for the wind that blows through the trees, The sea’s mighty storms, the gentlest breeze. They blow where they will, they blow where they please, To please the Lord.

Praise for the rain that waters our fields, And blesses our crops so all the earth yields. From death unto life her myst’ry revealed, Springs forth in joy.

Praise for the fire who gives us his light, The warmth of the sun to brighten our night. He dances with joy, his spirit so bright, He sings of you.

Praise for the earth who makes life to grow, The creatures you made to let your life show, The flowers and trees that help us to know

The heart of love.

The Mother House was blessed and opened at New Town, Hobart in 1908 and the Sisters took responsibility for the parish school which would later become Sacred Heart College. This was the first foundation made by the Sisters in an urban area.

In the 1930’s, a property was purchased at New Town for use as a novitiate. St Joseph’s Juniorate was established in Launceston and three more schools were opened.

In 1946, Regis House a hostel for young girls who had to move to the city for work was opened in Launceston. The hostel system for girls away from home thus became an integral part of the sisters’ ministry for fifteen years until a shortage of teachers for the schools compelled the Sisters to pass the hostel over to the care of the Missionary Sisters of Service.

The 1950’s brought further developments. Two boarding schools for girls were opened and conducted by the Sisters. St Joseph’s Waterton Hall catered for the education of girls between the ages of four and twelve and a Boarding School for secondary students commenced at St Thomas More's School, Newstead. For many years, this made it possible for children from the remote islands in Bass Strait to receive a Catholic education. The Sisters continued to respond to the need for the provision of Catholic education in the more isolated parts of the diocese, establishing schools at Smithton in the far north-west of the island and at Rosebery, a mining town on the West Coast.

In 1967 the five diocesan Congregations of Sisters of St Joseph which originated at Perthville came together to form the Australian New Zealand Federation of the Sisters of St Joseph with a common Constitution.

In the late 1970’s and the 1980’s, the ministries of the Sisters became more diversified with Sisters working in

HISTORY:

The Tasmanian Congregation of Sisters of St Joseph is one of the five Diocesan Congregations which emerged from the original foundation of Sisters of St Joseph at Penola, South Australia in 1866 by Father Julian Tenison Woods and Mother Mary MacKillop.

At the request of Bishop Matthew Quinn, a foundation was made by Mother Mary MacKillop at Perthville in the Bathurst Diocese in New South Wales on 16 July, 1872. Bishop Quinn who was used to the Irish model of Religious life, with control centred in the Bishop of the Diocese, wished to change the character of the Congregation from one governed by Central Authority, as upheld by Rome in 1873, to a Diocesan Institute.

Sister Hyacinth and Sister Evangelist, together with a group of Irish postulants, responded to his wish and formed at Perthville the nucleus of a Diocesan Institute which dates back to January, 1876. Its first Rule, identical in spirit to the original rule, was drawn up at Bishop Quinn’s request by Fr Julian Tenison Woods, who guided the Institute in its earliest years.

Communities of Sisters were later sent from Perthville to Whanganui, New Zealand, 24th April 1880; to Goulburn, New South Wales, 13th August 1882; to Lochinvar, New South Wales, 2nd September 1883; and Westbury, Tasmania, 24th May 1887.

Rapid expansion of the ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Catholic Education followed the first foundation of the convent and school at Westbury in 1887. Convent schools were established at Hamilton-on-Forth (May 1889), Ulverstone (July 1889), Devonport (January, 1891). By the turn of the century, the Sisters had made thirteen foundations, including one in Victoria, and were conducting schools in remote settlements, rural and mining towns throughout Tasmania.

All stand - GREAT ST JOSEPH A Gereon Stein (1852)

Great Saint Joseph! Son of David, Foster-father of our Lord. Spouse of Mary ever Virgin, Keeping o’er them watch and ward! In the stable thou didst guard them With a father’s loving care; Thou by God’s command didst save them From the cruel Herod’s snare.

Three long days in grief and anguish With his Mother sweet and mild, Mary, virgin, thou didst wander, Seeking the beloved child. In the Temple thou didst find him: Oh what joy then filled thy heart! In thy sorrows, in thy gladness, Grant us Joseph, to have part.

Clasped in Jesus’ arms and Mary’s When death gently came at last, Thy pure spirit sweetly sighing From its earthly dwelling passed. Dear Saint Joseph! by that passing May our death be like to thine; And with Jesus, Mary, Joseph May our souls forever shine.

13

PROFESSION OF FAITH: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Hope for the hopeless, Gently revealed in the love we share.

In our dying and rising, We shall follow where he has gone Pilgrims and lovers, He is our story and he our song.

Flowing out of the desert Rolling down from the mountain side Up from within you Water of newness and life eternal.

Raining down from the heavens Springing up from the driest earth Simple and holy Water of love and life eternal.

Gift of love and of mercy Given freely to all who thirst Gentle and yielding Water of grace and life eternal. Alleluia. Alleluia.

22

parish and diocesan ministries, adult faith education and spirituality.
