This participatory habitat project was co-developed with the self-promoters. All parties favoured optimising the use of the template authorised by Grenoble’s land-use plan for construction. We then sculpted, hollowed out and refined the space to facilitate access and flow, and to optimise the light and views. The 5 apartments, the guest room and the common areas benefit from an architecture that favours conviviality and multiple views. With its prismatic structure, the building is, essentially, a large roof marked by valleys and hips. Aware of the level of excellence and precision of the projects’ carpenters, we were determined to use wood framing techniques to achieve, as much as possible, a result resembling the designs developed by the inhabitants. The framework is made of spruce from the Vercors forests and the cladding and decking are made of larch wood from Briançon. The carpenter provided the wood, and the inhabitants lay the timber under his supervision. The building’s insulation was also completed according to the same economic principle, i.e. based on the labour input of the future inhabitants.
