National Context:
• As per Ethiopia’s DHS report, 2005 – 44% of the
HHs collect water from unimproved sources.
• More than five out of ten children under the age
of five are chronically malnourished.
• Under five mortality rate 123/1000 live birth

• As per the revised GoE WASH UAP for 2015
o Improved water supply access from 68.5% - 90%
o Improved sanitation access from 60% - 84%

National Context Cont ..:
• Goal of MoWE: – “Enhance and promote all national efforts towards efficient, equitable and optimum
utilization of the available Water Resources of Ethiopia for significant socio-economic
development on sustainable basis."
• Among the WASH Objectives of GoE: – Provision of sustainable and sufficient water supply services as much as conditions permit .
– Satisfying water supply requirements for livestock, industries and other users as much as
conditions permit.
• Constitution article 90.1 & 92.2: – provision of clean and healthy environment

a) Improved access and practice to sanitation
facilities and hygienic behaviour
Results:
The hygiene of the community significantly improved (i.e. the
practice of hand washing significantly improved and interval of
cloth washing & bathing improved from quarter and monthly basis
to maximum of weekly or less).
More than 90% of the community has HH latrine

MUS approach can bring the change we all aspire;
MUS approach has much contribution for optimal utilization of WASH
schemes;
MUS approach has immense role in ensuring sustainability of schemes;
Provision of farm inputs also has contributed to maximize the livelihood
impact;

• Water supply scheme designs should always consider all possible demands
with the available supply.
• MUS can work by combining existing tools for design, planning,
implementation, operation and maintenance water supply schemes.
• MUS approach should be recognized as a key option for water service delivery.
• MUS approach should be accompanied with water management plan for
efficient utilization of water resource.
• Water allocation and management decisions should always consider its social,
economic and environmental impact.
