“Image” Newsletter January 2020

To receive a digital copy of this newsletter, e-mail the

church office at [email protected]

It is now the year 2020. Things are changing faster than they ever have before.

We can get information about anything just by speaking the question out loud

thanks to our smart devices. We are in constant contact with family and friends.

News comes to us faster than we need it to. It seems that all we need to do is think

about making a purchase and Facebook lets us know where we can get it the

cheapest and fastest. This is crazy.

This is also an election year. Being (relatively) new to Iowa, I’m not sure I like

this whole idea of having the first in the country caucus. We don’t ever get a break

from campaigning politicians. And with all that is going on in Washington, I’d like to

vote every one of them out and start over. Seriously. This is crazy.

With all the fighting going on in the world, I question if it is safe to travel

anywhere. There is fighting in the Middle East. There are protests in Hong Kong

and Spain and many other places. Australia is on fire and California is already

burned up. This is crazy.

At the end of every service, I pray this prayer:

Lord, we pray for peace; a peace that begins and ends with you. Fill our

hearts to overflowing so that one day soon that peace may overtake this

world.

Yes, we need peace. We need peace in and for a weary world. We need peace

in this country and in our homes. We need peace within ourselves. We need

peace in this crazy world.

This is my prayer for you for this new year. May you find the peace of God and live in its comfort for all your days.

Can you help support a faith formation experience?

There are a couple students in need of a little financial help to attend Quake. This is a faith filled weekend where students learn more about their relationship with God, ask the tough questions, and worship with kids of their own age. Of course, there is an element of fun involved too since we will be in WI Dells at a water park. If you are able to help one of our BLAST/FORCE students attend this faith formation event, please talk to Gina. Thank you for your generosity.

2019 Operation Christmas

Child Shoebox Totals are in! 15,262 boxes were shipped from Northeast Iowa. Three semis, some loaded with makeshift cartons, headed to Denver, CO. The Denver processing center processed shoeboxes for Mexico, Native Americans (NM, AZ, MT and NE), Ghana and South Africa. Thank you for your generous contributions!

8th Graders and Parents

On Wed, Jan 8th at 7pm, there will be a meeting for all 8th grade Confirmation students and their parents. At this meeting we will plan the confirmation service, discuss the 8th grade retreat and banquet, and talk about the 8th grade Confirmation project. Please make every attempt to be at this very important meeting. Thanks!

Preschool Scholarship Donations Wee Care Preschool is currently seeking scholarship donations for our 3-year-old program. Tuition for the 3-year-old program is $100 per month (Sept-May). In the past we have been able to give full tuition scholarships and we would like to be able to continue to do so for the future. You can designate this on your giving envelopes and write “preschool scholarship”. If you have questions, you can contact Lindsey O’Loughlin, board president, or any other member of the Wee Care Preschool board.

A new year. A new beginning. A fresh start. What a great feeling. We talk

about what we have accomplished, what our resolutions are, and sometimes even set a few new goals for ourselves. The past year could have been a time of successes, struggles, or growth, but no matter what, the new year brings hope. A clean slate to create new. What does that look like for you? Working harder in your classes? Giving time to someone who is lonely? Thinking about yourself in a different way? Evaluating your relationships? Being a better friend? Spending your money more wisely? Whatever it is, know that you can do it! But not alone. God will be there with you in your struggles. He helps you succeed and meet your goals. He even makes us grow in ways we don’t ever imagine possible. But do you want to know the best part???? We don’t have to wait for a new year for the new beginning. We are washed clean, saved by grace, and prepped for a new beginning each day. Because of Jesus, we have the clean slate every day. Now, what are you going to do with it?

Corner... Sunday School News The Immanuel Sunday School continues to go well with the average weekend attendance of 50 students. The children’s offering in 2020 will go to Ronald McDonald House and the last three months of the school year in 2020, the donations will go to Camp EWALU. We thank all the students who gave to Operation Christmas Child and we will be sending them a check for $250.03. A special thanks to all the teachers, student helpers, and students who put on such a wonderful Christmas Program called “Arise & Shine”. We also want to thank Ashlee Parker, Gina DeBoer, and Jody DeBoer for teaching the students the new songs for the play and Val Maximovich for helping with the costumes.

Sunday School teachers, please pick up your new 2020 curriculum material at the church office. Sunday School starts again on Sunday, January 5, 2020. If you have any questions, concerns or need supplies, please contact me. I look forward to working with you in the New Year.

Finding Her Community

Originally from Eritrea, Kiros, her husband, and her young son were forced to flee their country and live in an Ethiopian refugee camp for almost two years.

When the opportunity came to resettle in Iowa, Kiros and her husband were excited to put down roots and call Iowa home. They settled in the Des Moines community and knew this was it; this was where they wanted to create a new life in the U.S.

Since then, they have raised four more children and set their sights on receiving citizenship in the country that helped them heal and rebuild.

Kiros enrolled in LSI’s English and citizenship classes and worked hard to study for her U.S. Citizenship Exam. Every week, she met with instructors from LSI’s Refugee and Immigrant Services to prepare for her interview with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

When the time came, she passed her exam with flying colors. She recently attended her U.S. citizenship ceremony, then went home to prepare for her daughter’s fifth birthday party.

Kiros has poured her time and energy into building a life where her family has the same opportunities as every other family in their community.

Raising our Voice for Iowa Children and Families – Lutheran Day on the Hill

Families struggling without access to mental healthcare. Human services providers overworked and underpaid. Former refugees striving to build new lives.

These are all issues faced by Iowans. Join us to make sure they are heard at the Iowa State Capitol.

Please consider joining Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) and the three Iowa synods of the ELCA for Lutheran Day on the Hill, an annual day of advocacy in Des Moines to uplift the needs of our neighbors. The event will be held on Tuesday, February 25. Visit www.LSIowa.org/advocacy next month for event details, online registration, and an online toolkit for your congregation.

If you are new to advocacy, come learn more about the legislative process and your role as a citizen. If you’ve attended before, join us again. If you would like more information, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI’s director of philanthropy and church relations, at [email protected] or 563-676-2065.

Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an af-filiated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual ori-entations. We raised $628 for Operation Santa Claus to buy toys for needy children of Buchan-an County. Quilts and School Kits 107 quilts and 128 school kit backpacks were taken to St. Peters church in Denver, Iowa on November 9th. These items began their long journey to needy school children in other parts of the world. Service Mission

Immanuel has a very important mission here in our own church providing lunch after a funeral for family and friends. Many hands go into preparing and serv-ing food. The Mitten Tree

IWELCA donates many mittens, scarves, and stocking caps to Operation Threshold for needy children of Bu-chanan County for their Santa Claus giveaway. This year over 63 items were donated for Christmas. Also 5 pairs of snow pants and 5 pairs of boots were donated. Heifer International IWELCA donated funds toward purchasing 4 water fil-ters ($120), 3 goats ($150) and flock of chicks and one goat ($60) to give to needy families to help them be lifted out of poverty. Baby care kits for Lutheran World Relief IWELCA donated many baby care kits which included sleepers, t-shirts, receiving blankets, diapers, sweat-shirts, socks, soap, and towels. Family for Christmas Christmas gifts were purchased for a needy family in Buchanan County to make the holiday brighter. (Please note that some of these projects received funds from Thrivent Financial.)
