What do you do when life seems to be very cruel and miserable to you? How do you react when it seems that everything bad is happening to you and around you? Do you grumble against God? Do you question his wisdom and benevolence? Do you blame God easily because things do not go your way? Brothers and sisters in Christ, the gospel reading for this 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Cycle B, seems to suggest that God is just around the corner not minding what is happening to you. The gospel reading from St. Mark says that “A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep in a cushion”. Did Jesus just not mind the eminent danger at that moment? They could have drowned all together on the lake and die. It seems that Jesus was oblivious to the danger they were in. This gospel passage tells us a great message that most of us are not always paying attention to. In essence, this seeming dangerous violent squall tells us that God is still in charge of this universe, every counter-indication notwithstanding. It is not surprising that the early Christian creeds had only one line: Jesus is Lord! That really says it all. God still rules, even in death and darkness. God is always in control, even in those times when our very souls are in fear of drowning, for we think that God is asleep, comfortable, his head on a cushion. But the real challenge is to trust that Jesus would calm the violent seas of our life and put everything in order. We all have this temptation to blame everything bad happening to us on God. Maybe this great poem written anonymously can help us realize that God is always present in our lives and in control.
Footprints in the Sand
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from
my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was only
one. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods
of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see
only one set of footprints. So, I said to the Lord:
“You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk
with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there has only been one set of footprints in
the sand. Why when I needed you the most, have you not been there for me?”
The Lord replied, “My child, my precious child,
the times when you have seen only one set of footprints, it was then
that I carried you.”
12th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In the Gospel reading, there is a storm on the sea and the apostles' boat begins to fill with water. They are very afraid; and they wake up Jesus, who is asleep in the back of the boat. Calm the sea. And then he asks his disciples two questions: Why are they terrified? Still have no faith? Why are they terrified? Well, because that boat is filling up with water, the wind is fierce, the waves are high, and there is an excellent chance that everyone in the boat will be drowned. With all this clear that we will be afraid? And why does Jesus ask them if they have faith? The first reading is from the book of Job. Job certainly had faith, and he lost all his children and possessions in one day, shortly before suffering from a nasty skin disease. If having faith won't save a person from Job's fate, then why wouldn't the disciples fear, even if they had faith? The solution is to see how Jesus rescues his disciples from the shipwreck. It does not issue decrees on the climate. Speak directly to the sea. "Be quiet!" tells the sea. And we see that in the First Reading this is exactly how God deals with the ocean. Just as Jesus says "you" to the sea, so God says "you" to the ocean: "You will go this far and no more." For God, for Jesus, even inanimate objects like the ocean and the sea have an I - You relationship with their Lord. Even the sea and ocean are in a direct second-person relationship with the loving God who created them. And if this is true for the ocean and the sea, how much more is it true for each of us? So faith is not the mere belief that there is a God. Faith is the willingness, in trust, to say "you" to God, as God says "you" to each one of us. In this I-You relationship with the good and loving Creator of all that exists, what can I fear? Whether we live or die, whether we are sad or quiet, we must rejoice in the love of God our Lord. And that is why we should not be afraid.
¿Aún no tienen fe?
